Title: engine running problems
Post by: Peter on September 04, 2012, 11:52:32 am
hello,
At the bugshow, my trigger wheel pulley for my ignition self destructed and now i am using a standard 009.
Until switching to the 009, my car ran fine, but now i have a horrible studdering when i floor it... (it seems to be running ok when cruising)
I gapped the plugs to 0.4 mm for use with my magneto, but the engine still wont fire up with the mag..
Where would you guys start?
I guess i can start with reading the plugs? I doubt its a problem with the carbs, but i am not sure..
Oh, i swapped the dizzy with another 009 from my cousin (which works fine on his engine), but no change..
Can a faulty coil cause this? I think it would run badly or even not run with a bad coil, right?

thanks, Peter

Are you saying it runs badly with a 009 and not at all with a magneto or now it wont run with either?

Have you got spark? Have you got fuel down the barrels of the carbs?

Take a plug lead off and connect it to a spare spark plug and ground it to the engine block, then get someone to turn it over to see if you have a spark at all?

Hey Stefan,
with both 009's it runs, but studders at higher rpm/loads
with the magneto, not much happens at all...

Sooo...
i tried again with my cousin's 009 and his coil , but still the same..
so i gues no ignition issue..
my cousin saw fuel coming out one carb at wot from the topside... i know a little "cloud" is normal but he said it was more than that...
so i guess something is wrong inside... :( the inlet not closing properly or something....
we ll see...

IDA's? never had fuel come out the top like that before. there are others on here with more experience with IDA's than me tho that could help you out.

Checked float levels and fuel pressure? sounds almost like too much fuel pressure?

Did you run programmable ignition before or some kind of crank trigger system with analog/digital retard and advance?
If you were running programmable, then you're likely to run into symptoms like you described. With an optimized ignition
map you are able to run very lean A/F ratios without any "hickups". With a magneto or 009 you only have centrifugal
ignition advance and you'll be down on advance in partial loads. It should fire up on both 009 or magneto though.

what trigger wheel setup were you running? sounds like you just need to replace that....?

guessing your jetting ect was setup with the ECU and not a dizzy yh?

hello,
yes i did run an ignition like that...
but to be honest, i didnt jet the carbs at all,
just cleaned them and ran them.
my motor performed well, and afr was a bit rich, so i didnt change the jetting..
i used a 36-1 wheel, but i want to run the mag  :)

Sorry, but it will be with my Mazda :)
working on the bug right now, the notch is dead... :)

OK, you've had three ignition set-ups on the car: crank-trigger and, I presume, ECU. 009 and coil. Magneto.

It runs (just) on the 009, but won't run at all on the magneto. You may already have thought of this but each of the three ignition systems will require a different tachometer (rev counter). A normal 'points and coil' tach will earth a magneto and stop it firing, for example.

Disconnect any/all wiring associated with the tacho and try it. Like I say, you may already have done this.

Just a thought... :)

good point keith.
peter, you might then wanna get yourself one of these (http://www.huntmagnetos.com/store/auto%20magneto%20parts%20and%20accessories/storeview_5298.php?id=56).

thanks a lot guys,
yeah, allready tried that as well Keith...
but the mag fires I am sure, i did the red pole trick with my friend.. :)
also when i connect a spark plug and turn the magneto, i have a nice spark...
I ll get the box when it runs, dont need a tacho for now ...

maybe not the real source of your problem, but on my engine the 009 and 010 reacted a bit like you describe. it runs OK up until you reach 5500 rpms or if you floor it. i installed a 009 with a compufire and all was solved...

Peter,

I still have a 009 with compufire and coil in perfect working condition, if you want I can drop it of friday so you still can make it overthere.
Call me,

Dem

I just found out again last night that when you set up an engine for a regular distributor and then install a magneto the plug wires all need to be changed one step counterclockwise. So 4 goes in place of 1, 1 for 2, 2 for 3, 3 for 4.

How about trying that?

Hey Dieds,
I might be a bit dumb now, but if you turn the whole mag 90 degrees, isnt this the same effect?

Dem, thanks very much... I ll call you later about it.. I can sure try

sure, but if you have the fancy joe hunt cap like i do that may give a little problem regarding the length of your plug wires.

Hey guys,
something i forgot:
during the weekend in SPA, i lost the oil filler cap and the engine spuwed oil in the right carb...
I didnt think about it till now, but could it be its due to this?

maybe just an oil drained malfunctioning sparkplug?  ???  or is this too simple?

=> I had "similar problems" with fouled plugs in the beginning when my settings where too rich, rejetted the engine and changed to a msd setup, never had a similar problem again and I can assure you I changed maybe 10 sparkplugs on one cilinder before...

checked some things on the engine yesterday:

took out the plugs and yes i found something...
the 3 and 4 side plugs looked the same, clean of oi and tan brown...
the 1 and 2 side was a different story : one white and one darker than the 3 and 4...
i ll try to make a pic later....
i checked the carbs and they seemed fine...

cheers, Peter

Hey guys,
after a lot of cursing, i decided to try again my old crank trigger ignition...
so i made a new triggerwheel, installed it on the pulley and threw in the computer...
Whell... the car runs again...as good as she did before i had problems..
very strange, but i am stoked i could drive my car again!!!
the 185's struggeled for traction  ;D
