Title: How big?
Post by: Andy Sykes on September 08, 2012, 08:51:08 am
So talking to Russ Fellows yesterday it seams the my 366 bullseye turbo is too small for the Pauter engine I have coming  :'( so I need another turbo it's going to be 2.9l 9:1 comp ratio with modular cylinders on meth. So what turbo would you guys go for and what size headers?

Cheers andy

How much hp are you planning to run? I have a Holset HX52 capable of 850-900 sustained horsepower. A lot of the Jap boys run them and make astronomical power  :o
It has a billet compressor wheel etc etc.

Hi Matt,

Motor is being built for 800bhp not that I'm going to use that for a while. The s366 is maxed out at 800, so I understand on a flat 4 that's not going to happen due to being inefficent. Russ suggested a S380 he is running a S372 and getting 780bhp and over 700nm torque. Is the HX52 maxed at 900 ?

Cheers andy

Yeah, 900 is the limit. Still more than enough for a while ;)

Lol too right it's enough so it should make 750 ish on a flat 4?

My HX40 made 638 at only 28psi. The 52 will breeze 750 on a flat four. These turbos are designed to run 45 psi all day long on an artic :)

Andy,
If you want an 80mm turbo for drag racing use, look at this one:
http://www.full-race.com/store/turbos/borgwarner-airwerks/borgwarner-s400sx-80mm-1-25-a-r-t4-turbo.html
With this you can probably retain (much of your) current header routing as its also T4 twin-scroll and I wouldn't go larger on the exhaust diameter if it were me. Just match it nicely to the heads.

I would stay away from Precision (based) turbo's as I've heard and seen too many fail especially in the larger frames..

Whatever turbo you decide to buy make sure you buy it from a place where you get good service, fast handling and cheap shipping, all of which is getting rarer and rarer these days. I know that http://www.turbosdirect.com/ is the choice for some of the world fastest VW. I have also heard that their customer care is top notch. I cant think of nothing worse than being stuck in the garage due to waiting for parts.

Thanks very much for your replies looks like I will be buying Matts HX52, I think I can still use my header that's set up for twin scroll ( need to do a bit more research). I'm sure you will set me straight lol. Waste gate a are twin 38mm from what I've read that will be too big  what do you think?

A single TS-44  will be plenty big enough for that motor and turbo. No need for the headach of twins just Y them together.
