Title: Got Tools?
Post by: Sarge on October 20, 2012, 23:17:53 pm
Retiring makes way for plenty of idle time around the house.  I was looking for something in the tool box today and got to remembering about my job as service writer / parts guy / mechanic-hack while employed first with Scott's Independent Porsche and later on with Steve's Independent back in the '80's.  Steve and I both worked for Scott to begin with along with Dan (Dan and Steve were the real mechanics).  Scott decided to move to a new location down the street and figured everyone was coming with him but only Dan decided to go.  Steve stayed on at the old location and opened his own shop where I joined him for a much needed R&R after leaving Cotton Goff VW.  The shop was next door to Becker's Bug House and there was never a dull moment!  Jimmy Becker & Gary "Harry Knows" O'Neal (Gary painted a lot of cars for Leonard Becker... he had a huge mustache and a large nose and KNEW EVERYTHING) delighted in tormenting Scott constantly.  Scott was meticulous about his tool box.... Jimmy loved jerking the drawers open while supposedly looking for a tool he needed >:(.  At any rate, I learned a hell of a lot from working with Steve; the most important thing is having the right tool for the job.  Here's some of what I've collected over the years... let's see what you have!

Nice Sarge.  Love the metal Sucrets box, I remember my dad having many of those in his toolboxes back in the day.

Why do you have film in your toolbox.   :o

Thanks Mike... those old film canisters were good for stashing jets ;D  I was always big on tinkering with carbs and went so far as buying this rather expensive test kit for measuring accelerator pump discharge when I had the dual side draft Mikuni Solex set-up on the Datsun truck.

Good stuff, Sarge! I dig the Woodruff key collection, too.

:o :o :o DAMN!!! ;D  With that many selections, I'd spend all my time scratching my ass worrying about which wrench to use.  Impressive!!

Note the machined crank gear keys... the old school way to advance or retard cam timing. ;)

Unfortunately, my internal alarm clock is still set for 4:00am... even worse is not being able to last past 8:00pm! ;)

Jim, an impressive collection of neat goodies you have there.  Over the past 40+ years I've collected stuff as needed and when I got into the American iron that required even more.

My tool box is the same Craftsman that my folks gave me for Christmas back in the early '70's and even with additional top section and side cabinet I purchased I'm still tight on room.  To make it more interesting when my Dad passed back in 2005 I inherited all of his stuff including a bunch of wood working power tools.

I seldom use the wood working stuff as I have little or no talent for such.  Fortunately Dad was smart enough to build frames with wheels on each item so they are easily moved around which happens every time I want to get a car out of the back of our garage.

Bottom line is I have to many cars and to many tools that I don't use.  The smart thing to do would be to let some of it go but nah that wouldn't be any fun.............

The easy cure is to move to the east coast, then its fixed!
