Title: Which cam?
Post by: andy198712 on October 21, 2012, 16:05:39 pm
I'm torn between camshafts at the minute.

I'm building a 2110 as a strong daily.
I would love 150bhp but not essential (crank hp)

I have :
Cb super race 82mm crank in vw flavour. Will be dynamically balanced with all rotating parts
Cb unitech hd's end to end balanced to 0.1g
Weight matched pistons to 0.1g ceramic and anti friction coated
Cb 044's 40x35 oval ported and un shrouded ceramic coated after I set compression
Hd Ali push rods
Forged 1.4 rockers
TP's 56g tool steels

Currently have a fk8 but I'm wondering if I would get more power from a webcam 86b or any other grind?
Any suggestions on cam and compression ratio would be great

Thanks in advance

Andy

I had a very similar combo with fk8 but 2275cc, 10:1 comp. It was an absolute joy to drive and dynoed 150hp.

ditto on the K8,  I've been running one for years.  My 2165 makes about 150HP.

K-8 is a very good cam, I ran it, I put it in two motors for customers, ran great. The dur. @ .050 is 258*, the Web 86B is 260*, a tad more dur. at .050, advertise dur for the K-8 is 298*, the Web is 300*, again, a tad more. depends what ya want. I was told by my head guy for me to run the Web 86B from my now 86C, cause of my heads he's finishing up, supposedly, alot more power. Will find out on the dyno when I get to that point.

cheers guys.

i know the K8 is a proven cam, just wondering if i'll get more from another cam but still have a semi polite driving car..... for the sake of £20 more then the engle i have, i'd hate to miss out on some power...

One of my brothers has an engine with a very similar to yours but with 9:1 and 86b cam.  It has 152 hk and 213 nm.

blimey, nice torque number!

i think i'm fairly sold on the 86b, what lobe center ect do i want? i think you need the specs when you order from webcam...?

cheers guys!

Sorry I do not know the lobe center on my brothers cam.
Maybe 108 but I am not sure...

It is 108 LC  ;)

I second the "b" over the FK8. More usable power, more silent running, better torque. If youre ready to use high octane (98 euro octane or Vpower) bump the CR to 10-1 and get a tad more hp and looads of torque. I have managed 110 Nm/L several times on 2110 - 2332 street engines.
The FK8 aint bad at all. the "b" is just a newer and better cam. The CB 2288 isnt a bad choice either in that range.

Cheers bud!
could i not run the regular UK 95ron on 10:1 then? i'll have full control over my ignition table and injection via megasquirt....

are we talkinga big differance from say 9:1 or..?

cheers :)

Uhhh, I get the shivers when people talk control with MS. I havent seen the first ACVW run well with that yet.

But wrt CR. There is a large difference in torque across the board, hp not so much. With 9-1 and 95 octane it will still be good.

:P my 1200 seems to run to much better on it! (ignition only) i guess its all in the tune, you can tune any ECU to make an engine run crap.... ? its the cheap DIY version of custom ECU's really so i expect alot of time tuning and faffing around! :)

so its 9:1 about the limit on 95 ron fuel then?

chambers will be ceramic coated if that makes any differance?

at the moment my heads CC at 60cc which with 0.040 deck that gives me 8.9:1

thanks Thorben

IIRC my 1914 was 10:1 with an Engle 130 and I ran it on regular unleaded.

i ran 9.6 on regular no bother and 26 degrees total timing.

Andy, with a 100% accurate timing you should be able to bump the CR to more than 9-1 on 95 octane. How much I dare not say for certain. I´d speculate something like 9,5 max. I have run 10,3-1 on Vpower fuel and 30 degree timing. It took a little trial & error to get the lower rpm advance right. But since we got that covered it runs nice and strong.

Hmmmm thanks bud, so I think in a daily I'll stick to 9:1 as not all garages stock super unleaded down here......
Better safe then sorry sometimes!
