build up features when i was a kid, and it will still look as fresh today as it did then ,great :) . Title: Re: Colin Burnhams Street Machine UK Cal Look car: Resto Starts Post by: kev d on December 19, 2012, 10:41:19 am That was still mot'd when I bought it... :o
How many people of a certain age got into dubs because of that car??? Title: Re: Colin Burnhams Street Machine UK Cal Look car: Resto Starts Post by: leec on December 19, 2012, 11:29:01 am I seem to remember seeing it an an early volksworld show with a massive stereo system in it, or am I imagining that?

Title: Re: Colin Burnhams Street Machine UK Cal Look car: Resto Starts Post by: Shane Noone on December 19, 2012, 12:29:00 pm That was still mot'd when I bought it... :o How many people of a certain age got into dubs because of that car??? I reckon the list is long and distinguished ;D I was at college at the time and remember seeing it as the cover car on Street Machine magazine in a local magazine store and my jaw dropped in wonder. I had never seen a Cal Look styled bug before and after reading the article over and over and memorizing the pics etc, I knew what I had to do to my poor old 72 Marina Blue stock 1300...... The Inspirational bug that set me on the path. Glad to hear it's still around and going to be restored. Cheers Shane. Title: Re: Colin Burnhams Street Machine UK Cal Look car: Resto Starts Post by: Andy on December 19, 2012, 14:40:33 pm Good to see it is going to be restored, it has to be the most influential, UK, car of the '80s. And probably responsible for all the late model bugs being fitted with long bonnets and 'W' decklids :)
Title: Re: Colin Burnhams Street Machine UK Cal Look car: Resto Starts Post by: leec on December 19, 2012, 17:56:09 pm Memory playing tricks on you there ;) Really, was talking to someone else today, they said it had silver 5 spoke 17 inch wheels as well? Title: Re: Colin Burnhams Street Machine UK Cal Look car: Resto Starts Post by: kev d on December 19, 2012, 18:41:32 pm It had the 17's on it along with the world worst attempt at a narrowed beam when I bought it :o, actually had 18's on it too which I was offered with it, may have had a big sound system at one point but there was no sign of one - no cut door panels etc.
Title: Re: Colin Burnhams Street Machine UK Cal Look car: Resto Starts Post by: Russell on December 26, 2012, 15:14:50 pm its fair sto say that when kevd had it it run and when i got it from kevd he has stolen all the steering parts..... we had to keep moving it on trolly jacks, anyway now its been saved from the hands of death Mr Dawson !!!! ;D and will see the great light in the sky again, mainly due to volksworlds 25th mag which remined me how good it was and why it would be great again now.....
Best Cal look at EBI 5 ??????? Title: Re: Colin Burnhams Street Machine UK Cal Look car: Resto Starts Post by: GASBNR on December 27, 2012, 03:52:10 am Hey Russell, do you have a picture of what it used to look like?

(http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff84/49-rag/DSC01724_zpsc32bd48d.jpg) I wasn't a real fan of the makeover Title: Re: Colin Burnhams Street Machine UK Cal Look car: Resto Starts Post by: kev d on December 28, 2012, 19:47:16 pm Yep that my pic!
I had the choice of the 17's or 18's.. It drove badly enough on the 17's I wouldn't want to have tried the bigger wheels :o Title: Re: Colin Burnhams Street Machine UK Cal Look car: Resto Starts Post by: Black Sheep on December 28, 2012, 21:33:30 pm Kev we need to talk ;)
Title: Re: Colin Burnhams Street Machine UK Cal Look car: Resto Starts Post by: too old for this on January 09, 2013, 23:26:44 pm This makes me feel real old......I was in the same class in school as Colin, last saw him about 15 years back at a school re-union.Told him I was thinking of building another Cal Looker....and he laughed.Lot of years and a lot more money later,he would probably still laugh and call me a silly old f*^t ;D

Title: Re: Colin Burnhams Street Machine UK Cal Look car: Resto Starts Post by: dive!dive! on January 19, 2013, 19:49:21 pm Wow! What to say ?
This car and the story of its build are solely responsible for me wanting a cal look beetle. I lusted after the car at the time and looking back at the articles (yes, I still have them, and Colins book) it still looks good. I bought an MOT failure '71 in 1988 for £50 and drove it home with a view to 'getting on the road quickly' for my wife. Well, 4 years after that the first resto was done! I still have the car and have just given it a good freshen up. Colins car 'cost' me tens of thousands of £ over the past 25 years! Looking forward to seeing this restored. Splendid! Steve Title: Re: Colin Burnhams Street Machine UK Cal Look car: Resto Starts Post by: Russell on February 05, 2013, 00:41:01 am So the bodywork is done and the paint is being applied.... so on course.
