Title: OK back to the car-building...
Post by: nicolas on July 03, 2007, 20:09:29 pm
first off EBI was great. i may have missed out on a couple of moments since it was my first trip with girl and son, but i had a wonderfull time. i enjoyed everything and i will be at EBI 2 next year no doubt.

but alas it was without the fastback (das drag day is the next attempt)

so i need to get working and that is what i did yesterday. i bought a set of studs and lugs that should fit real empi 8 spokes and i got a set of locks from empi as well. but the hole in the wheel is slightly bigger as the studs end, and way bigger as the locks. i have some sort of cup that i can put in the holes with the locks, but the space between the other holes and lugs is very small but noticable.

so my question is how do i mount everything? is it ok to have a bit of play between the rim and lugs? to me that seems wrong because the wheel wont be centered completely... am i correct?

here are some pics that show both the locks and studs.

thanks

oh sorry i haven't mailed you back... my bad

yes it looks really good and my fingers are itching to open up the 1641 and put in this crank. but the engine as not a lot of miles on it so it would be a bit stupid. but i want this crank in my car so much.

thanks again to you and stephan for taking so much care of the crank. i think he treated it like a little baby on the plane.  ;D and of course the guys from DFL who brought the crank to Bug In

hear from you soon

and many many thanks

You cant use that type lug and stud with real Empi 8 Spokes if you do the wheels will keep coming loose and oblong the holes in the wheels  if you use the lug you have a spacer type cup would have to be custom machined for it Original Empi 8 Spokes Used a Stud,Lug, And Spacer See Picture below

Here is a Picture of a spacer collar you would need to make to use the lugs and studs you have

yes i have seen those from speedwell aka fabian, but i don't have the lugs or studs like he has. i only have a set of locks that fit those cups. i am getting another set of locks. i am thinking of having four locks per wheel... might be a little over the top, but that seems to be the only 'right' lugs i can find.

can you help me with these?

thanks

even the Shank size on the locks are to small  Russell and Frank Lux both had the spacers made check with them

russel is on it he said. but the ones i got from speedwell are too tall. they fit the rear drums of my fastback because they slip into the drum a little, but at the front against the disks, they don't fit right. they have a spacing of 1 or 1.5 mm and the wheel isn't fixed. it rocks a little and that is not so good (so i have been told  ;D)

and yes it is strange to have the studs in and still a lot of room. with these locks or studs you are not able to center the wheel.

so to all out there with real empi 8 spokes: the empi studs that are 'specific' for these rims may not be that good

There is nothing wrong with the Original EMPI Hardware (Studs,Lugs,Spacers) But there is nothing out there after market that will work there are two ways you can do it you can have 16 Spacers made with a VW Bevel and use a 914 Porsche 2.0 Lug nut Or you can have 16 Spacers made with a 60 degree Bevel and use 14mm Flat4 Brm Lugnuts for a Bus Both of these will work with no Problems at all  the Flat 4 lugs will be a little cheaper and are already chrome plated

No those will not work those are for the after market 8 spokes not the Original EMPI Wheels they are a concaved washer that changers the VW Ball Seat Bevel to a 60 Degree Bevel Lugnut. Original Empi 8 Spokes are flat like for a mag style lug but no one offers a lug nut with that big of shank  so Making a set is the only right way to do it.

Shubee,
What is the i.d. of the holes in the EMPI wheels?
Just a thought, but there are some 4x4 shanked lugs with larger than normal shank diameters which 'might' work.  Of course even if the diameter was right, they would be too long and would need trimmed down.

I dont have a Wheel right now to Check I have had about 25 sets in the Past and I had to make Hardware for some of the wheels

its not a big deal to have them made print a picture of one we showed you on the lounge take a wheel and a lug with you and go to your nearest machine shop the last ones I had made were made out of Stainless steel and Cost about $9.00 each  x 16  its up to you But You are not going to find Original Hardware it is long gone

I am having a set of these made at the moment, and I measured the ID of the holes in my wheels, and the diameter ranged from 19.2 to 19.5mm, if I remember correctly.

Contact Olaf here at the forum, he's the one that is helping me out.
