Title: Centre Caps & BRM wheels (copies) - How do you get the flat centre caps to fit?!
Post by: Deanodynosaurs on February 05, 2013, 14:34:18 pm
Cant get my head around this!! All the photos of other people cars I have seen that are running BRM's have flat ali centre cap on the front wheels.

I have fitted a set of MWS BRM copies on my car (before anyone goes on about MWS, they were cheap!!). However there is no way a flat centre cap will fit! The grease cap, which is needed for the speedo cable, sits way to far out?!

The cars a 58 bug, on standard drums. Just wondered how everybody else seems to manage to fit flat centre caps?! Spacers? No grease caps? diffrent grease caps?

On my 56 I drilled a hole in the cap for the speedo-cable. Works for me and isn't very visible.

Thats a cool idea. :)

Does the grease get thrown out much onto the wheel?

Hi Donny,

I've seen this, and am actually running them at the moment, although i have cut them down a bit to get them in a bit.

It just that i've seen plently of K&L pin car with the flat caps, and just wanna know how they do it. Perhaps there running diffrent spindles or something...........

No problem with that after one summer of driving.

Hit grease cap with hammer until center cap fits. No joke.

I first grinded down the spindle so it was flush with the outer nut, then I cut down and rewelded the grease cap and filed down the speedo cable so it was max 1 mm outside the retaining clip.
It was about 3 hours work but it was plenty of room.

Different wheels same scnerio for me..I run Flat Four einkei wheels with L&B flat center caps and I hammered down my dust cap and ground the tip of my speedo cable to fit.

Hammer down the dust cap till it hits the end of the spindle.

Then push the speedo cable "up the housing".

Then grind the end of the speedo cable, "past the circlip grove, till it is flush with the edge of the dust cap.  It's been working that way on our 1960 Bug for twelve years, the speedo cable has never come out of the dust cap.

Like JS says further up...giving the cap a good punch should do the trick!
I used to run Porsche A-brakes and BRMs on my old car with no problems at all :)

What he said ^^^^.

Did the same on mine to run flat centre caps on Flat 4 Fuchs. There are some pics of what I did in my thread somewhere  http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=75753
