Title: Any info on magneto's with a "Tacho drive" ?????
Post by: Lee.C on March 02, 2013, 16:22:18 pm
As always guys..... As the title says.......

Any info on magneto's with a "Tacho drive" ????? And before everyone jumps in and says

"you can run a normal tacho with a convertor box"
I am not interested in doing this as I have heard alot of bad things about these  :-\ Like being over 1000rpms OUT!!!!!, Needles bouncing badly, etc etc etc

Plus I really like the idea of a PROPER mechanical tacho giving a REAL reading of whats going on out the back  ;)
I know alot of the mechanical Tach's where built by "Jones Motorola" for the Vertex mags - I am maianly look for info on the Mag's
Does anyone have one for sale ???

So lets hear what you know guys  :)

You planning to watch your tach in your rear view mirror?
I don't think magnetos were meant to use really long tach drive cables.
Mechanical tachs are for engine in front, or a stationary engine, where the drive cable is two to three feet long.

That being said... I'm sure you could always get something custom made.

There is the mechanical type (VDO I think) that run off the oil pump with a special cover and a long cable to the front. You see a few Ghias with this set up.

I thought I'd bump this thread........

I really really want to run a mechanical tacho on my SPG motor......

I am having the tacho FULLY rebuilt/recurved etc by an Old guy that Ian knows so I can get a mechanical "Drive" fitted if needed, But I am also interested in these oil pumps......
(not 356 but from an industrial engine!)
