Title: custom fuel gauge
Post by: Peter on March 04, 2013, 19:53:42 pm
Hello guys,
i want to get rid of my speedo ..
problem is.. the fuel gage is in the speedo..
So i would like to make a fuel gauge myself with some LED's like a VU-meter..
something low profile
does somebody know how to do this?
i want to get rid of the glovebox as well, so i cannot put an original one in there or something...

Peter

You might check this out at Vintage Speed.  They are pretty cool.  Saw them one year at Bug-In.

That should be a fairly straightforward build. The Volkswagen sending unit resistance scale is the same as early Ford (73 ohms empty and 10 ohms full) which at least is in the right direction (less resistance when full will cause more lamps to light). Just make sure to hide those LEDs somewhere...unless you're using lots of '80s catalog billet parts and one of these:
