by chance does anybody know when exactly did first Berg shifter appeared? Also progressive changes, one-offs, background stories?

Thanks,

nice topic.a fan myself. i believe they were improved on the original DDS shifter, not sure how it got to this stage.

both of mine are 15 years old now and still working fine, never changed anything.

been pushing them to come up with a "correct" RHD finger grip though and i love their new 2.3" OD full round ball handles.

I would wager your best bet would be to contact the Bergs and ask them directly.  Who better to ask than the source direct, right?

Well I´m in central Europe so not easy to get in touch with Bergs:-) I meant this as a conversation topic only, as I did not found any comprehensive info on their shifters online...

I recently saw Berg ads for their shifter in 1982 issues of HVW's

Just came across an article presenting the Berg shifter in the September 81 issue of HVW´s.
This will answer your first question.
It was designed after he found it difficult to adapt existing 4speed shifters to his 5speed conversion kit.

Nice topic!! i have a two berg shifters, one first edition handle bought used somewhere in USA and one bought new in first person at Berg Ent. during my Honeymoon trip.
It would be nice if Mr Berg coosed to report, stamp or print the assembling date of every single handle on them.
