Title: Mike O'Neill DKP II Post by: Zach Gomulka on April 22, 2013, 01:08:40 am Was browsing through old Hot VW's issues and came across "A Day At The Races" from the August '77 issue. They follow Mike and his black 67 sedan up to and through Bug-In 18. It was a fun read. His car is strikingly similar to Johnny Salgado's sedan from 15 years later. Ran a 1750cc (I'm guessing 90x69, 1756cc?) Engle 140 cammed motor that ran into the 13's!
Any more info on Mike or his car? Title: Re: Mike O'Neill DKP II Post by: stealth67vw on April 22, 2013, 03:07:49 am From what I've seen in the past 1750cc is a 72 x 88.
Title: Re: Mike O'Neill DKP II Post by: bilboa2 on April 22, 2013, 06:50:34 am I seem to remember mike's car being a 1700 cc. 69 x 88. engle 140, close ratio box, deano wheels, welded heads, always being repaired with devcon etc, and showing up when told prior, it's broke real bad, That's it, no more... Kieth goss usually would help sort things out and mike would be driving it on the streets with slicks down to the cords. The big match in the club was ron griener and his 68, with a 2074 vs mike in his lighter 67. Close races. Mike lived right down the street from nick' s burgers. I seem to remember mike buying the car at a bug in from fred elliot for around $2300. ?? Back then across the street from nicks , Sunday nights " big willy " and the street racers would meet and head out to nabisco or ?? to street race. Some fast v8 cars on trailers would show from los angeles etc. I remember Doug Berg showing up with his buggy on a trailer, wheelie bars and padded roll cage.( 10.80's then ?) Big willy asked who wanted a piece of the buggy. SILENCE... Nobody wanted to try. I went for a ride with doug on the return road at o.c.i. r. in the dark. SCARY...Sorry, back to mike's 67, A true, quick street legal car from the 70's. Don't remember what happened to it. Maybe Goss will chime in ? REAL fun times with all the vw's on the streets of orange county. ESPECIALLY THE VW CLUB RALLIES. That needs a thread of its own. bill

Title: Re: Mike O'Neill DKP II Post by: Cheesepanzer on April 23, 2013, 00:06:13 am Cool article. 8) Great performance out of a small displacement engine.
Funny to read the rpm's with that W140 cam. I ran one of those cams in a 82x90.5 engine, welded 44x37 heads with IDA's and it was all done by 7000. The last pass reads like the extra rpm cost him the loss. Title: Re: Mike O'Neill DKP II Post by: bilboa2 on April 23, 2013, 01:12:40 am I talked to goss today, he says it was a 1776, 69 x 90.5 motor.

It's a straight up bitchin Cal Looker. Not over the top. Straight to the point. Is there anymore info on this car? Where did it go? What happened to Mike? I think maybe I remember reading that Dave C. acquired the front wheels from the car via Paradise? I could be wrong. Title: Re: Mike O'Neill DKP II Post by: speedwell on April 23, 2013, 17:34:32 pm mike , on the picture above , the wheels seems to be centerlines or bogard (similar brand) , if i remember the report you're talking , it was the 13" from don bedford 67

:-[ Title: Re: Mike O'Neill DKP II Post by: delux67 on April 24, 2013, 02:15:15 am 69X90.5 but I could have sworn it was an engle 130 cam.
