Title: Open and closing stand offs
Post by: Wayne C on May 06, 2013, 19:54:17 pm
Hi I was told a while back about engine lid standoffs that you can close and open. They were made in Germany by a company called cagero but they don't seem to be arou d anymore. There is a cagero VW in Germany but they are not the same company. Does anyone know where I can get a pair for my 63 bug?

Cheers. Wayne.

Not sure about that, but I think Wolfgang International has a prop type device that can be utilized for standard decklid standoffs?  They're based in Redding, Calif.

Thanks dude. I don't think it sounds like the same thing. What I'm on about the standoffs actually move in and out ar the top so looks like a standard engine lid then adjust and engine lid open at the top with stand offs.

Thanks for replying.  :)

Wolfgang made (makes?) an extension for the spring to mount. It's crap.

I can't see how they work, how do you open and close the lid at the top?

Title: Re: Open and closing stand offs
Post by: Wayne C on May 07, 2013, 15:50:07 pm
It's probably my crap description sorry about that. The lid doesn't actually open fully at the top. What happens is it opens as far as a stand off would but then it can close back shut as if it had standard hinges on. Giving you options to have it open on a run for cooling or shut when you park up. Kind of pointless piece of innovation but I really like the idea of them as I like the cooling but don't personally like the lines stand offs give to the rear of my car.

There are a few guys in the UK I know are running them so I thought I'd give them a shot.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Cheers

Wayne.

Has anyone got any photos of them fitted, both in a open and closed position?

Would be good to see. :)

-yep, Heydon has a set.  Alex Thorne (Mighty White) also has them. One of them may chip-in shortly..

They are very well engineered -almost too well as its quite difficult to open and close smoothly BUT they do do what they claim...

(Not cheap though)  :o

Yep just had an email back from the company. 299 Swiss francs + 30 for shipping which works out at £235.  I'm still gonna get a pair.

Hi

No pics to hand.

Looks like a stock lid or one with stand offs... Nothing different

You have to open the deck lid, then pull it towards you to stand off or push towards the car to stand down, the open and close as normal. The hinges slide and when stood off you insert a metal insert to stop them sliding closed next time you open it.

When stood off, mine needs to finger of pressure to ensure clearance at the top edge when closing.

Funky

Just close it slowly the first time with tape on the paint edges when fitting.  ;)

and if it does slightly catch- lock your decklid each time to stop others banging it.

Sorry missed the reply. Here's a few photos. Been on my bug for nearly a year now. Easy to fit. Work really well. When closed look like a standard engine lid. When open looks like a stand off lid.

Sorry for the delay mate. I don't really come on here very often so the notification must have got lost amoungst my emails and missed it. They took me about a hour or so to fit. Took longer to tweak them than it did to fit them. Cover everything in masking tape! As you can see I banged the paint knocking the pin out of the old hindge. All repainted and cool now but I was mega pissed off at the time.

Axam, they are 299 swiss francs ($334 USD).. not cheap but on first looks they extremely well made, engineered an all steel construction.

The ambient temps here are in the 40's now and I need all the fresh air I can get onto the motor, if these give you the ability to move easily between open or closed I'm happy!

Drop Gery an email at Cagero, extremely helpful.

I've ordered the kit by phone, very easy process, now it's on the way.
Looking forward to see how it fits.
I had standoff decklid by the past and was blaming the "long" process to get back to the standard decklid. Hope that this kit will answer my needs.

I'll post here the fitting process if you feel that might be of some interest

Fitted them today.

First checked the fitment on engine bay brackets..

(http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4db05b3127ccef6640257f95300000030O08QcNWLZm4aA9vPgo/cC/f%3D0/ls%3D00004830615820140524185706845.JPG/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D720/ry%3D480/)

Then after a few hours of soaking hinge pins removed and installed Romec ones..

(http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4db05b3127ccef664364a786400000030O08QcNWLZm4aA9vPgo/cC/f%3D0/ls%3D00004830615820140524190103866.JPG/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D720/ry%3D480/)

Checked hinges in open and closed modes..

(http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4db05b3127ccef6650c9ad9d500000030O08QcNWLZm4aA9vPgo/cC/f%3D0/ls%3D00004830615820140524185942763.JPG/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D720/ry%3D480/)

(http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4db05b3127ccef6645efdf9d700000030O08QcNWLZm4aA9vPgo/cC/f%3D0/ls%3D00004830615820140524190008010.JPG/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D720/ry%3D480/)

fitted to car and aligned in closed mode..

(http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4db05b3127ccef664751eb9b900000030O08QcNWLZm4aA9vPgo/cC/f%3D0/ls%3D00004830615820140524190059750.JPG/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D720/ry%3D480/)

now the fun bit... when moved to the standoff position the decklid slightly fouls the bottom of the air vents when you open and close the decklid, only overcome by pressing the decklid, not the end of the world and just need to make sure its only me who opens the lid.

(http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4db05b3127ccef6642b8c383400000030O08QcNWLZm4aA9vPgo/cC/f%3D0/ls%3D00004830615820140524190136552.JPG/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D720/ry%3D480/)

another little job done today was an air duct up into the oil cooler location, as the car has been converted to IRS the Porsche 964 oil cooler doesn't have the greatest position. The fan does it's job when the car is stationary but when moving I think it's in dead air. hopefully this coupled with the decklid standoff will give it some more hope of coping with poor fuel and ambient temps in the 40's.. a bit of aluminum and some u brackets around the torsion tube, be interesting to see if it works.

Is there any chance of a video?

Gibber, without posting a video the brackets work by being a 2 piece unit which slides between open and closed decklid position.

They are kept in position by a retaining clip, you slide it off and then the hinge becomes slidable between the 2 modes.

normal decklid position the bracket is fully compressed and clip stops outer piece from sliding open. Yellow arrow shows retaining clip.

(http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4db04b3127ccef667763a005400000030O08QcNWLZm4aA9vPgo/cC/f%3D0/ls%3D00004830615820140525090715382.JPG/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/)

to fully open decklid you remove clips, slide the brackets into their fully open position, then put the clips back on to the lock the bracket. It is recommended to do the clip removal and bracket movement with the decklid in the horizontal to the ground position (bolted to car!!). I found just resting the decklid on my head while kneeling on the ground worked for me.

Picture below shows bracket in fully open position, red arrow is the sliding part of the bracket. Yellow is the clip placed back in position.

(http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4db04b3127ccef6670f79c18300000030O08QcNWLZm4aA9vPgo/cC/f%3D0/ls%3D00004830615820140525090704093.JPG/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/)

The next pic shows the bracket fixed to the car and the red arrow highlights the sliding part.

(http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a4db04b3127ccef66616a7a18500000030O08QcNWLZm4aA9vPgo/cC/f%3D0/ls%3D00004830615820140525092752536.JPG/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/)

I hope this explains....
