Title: Will these wheels fit?
Post by: nigelg65 on June 01, 2013, 12:34:56 pm
Quick question: will 7x15s with a back spacing of 6-inches go on the back of an oval with CSP discs, and if so with what tyre? Cheers

Sounds like a lot of backspace. I don't know what the CSP brakes add to the track, but my guess is that you'll need long axles for sure.

I have 7x15 FUCHS on the back of my chop top but not disc brakes. I am running short 66 axles and late VW drums with 5x130 stud pattern.

Dyno...Eventually I will. It is a merged BERG header. I will have to slice off the collector to move them back. It is how it came. Might have been made for a different model...

I am running stock width rear fenders on my 66 chop with the 7" FUCHS in the rear on short 66 axles.

What tyres are you using Rick?

From memory I believe a 7" Porsche alloy has about 4 3/4" backspace (corrections welcome). His wheels have 6" backspace. The difference between long and short axles is 30mm (about 1 1/4"), which happens to be the additional backspace his wheels have compared to the alloys. Therefore it stands to reason that he will need long axles (not sure about the brakes though). All theory though, bolt up a wheel and find out.

Run a 205-215 width tire.

I am running a 215/70 Pirelli on the rear.  Will have to get the exact model and post for you.

Hey Zach...you and Chris Predmore going to the Classic this year?

Hey Rick. Sorry I missed your call yesterday, my hands were greasy helping a buddy of mine get his bus ready for the trip this weekend. So yes, we're going!

I played around with some seven's a few years ago , wish i kept them now coz they looked the bomb IMO

I had them on some late porker patten drums on a 18mm narrowed IRS hub under STD width wings , they were shod with 215 70's

18mm narrower? How did you come to that?

Zach....the bearing carrier can be cut and moved in that much. I have quite a few friends who have done this.

Right, I did the same on my GTV. I narrowed 26mm and used two left side axles from a type three auto trans. Stock axles and CV's with 18mm?

Someone I know narrowed his trailing arms 1 1/2" each side; he said the short auto type 3 axles (bought new from Empi) worked.

You can go much more.
I narrowed mine 34mm per side.  Then put 8" Fuchs under the stock fender.

Indeed.  Shortened them a bit too.

I've learned about how to do this from reading all of Bruce's posts on the topic. One side of a Type 3 is about 5/8" shorter than a Beetle. So thats about how much that you can cut and move and weld the bearing holder back into the control arm. Aftermarket axles have a lot of extra spline. This allows you to shorten them more for narrower applications.

18mm was just the starting point when i ran around on Fuch's , had to do another pair for my centerline's & took 36mm outta them
(http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff84/49-rag/DSC00254.jpg)
this is how they first looked with only -18mm ,
(http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff84/49-rag/DSC00252.jpg)
I run sway a way race axles with long splines you can machine to what length you need .
Pushing the hubs in is really very simple for a competent welder ,
just treble check everything before you commit and make sure you add some extra supportive strength to the exposed bearing carrier once your done  :)
I now only use the centerlines with my slicks and run a 9mm spacer with my 6.5 flat4 BRM's on the road

Not the best pic , but if you look closely you can see my first 18mm reduction where I've just pushed the carrier into the Arm , pretty simple stuff
(http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff84/49-rag/DSC00251.jpg)
But this is the extent I had to cut to get the 36mm needed to get my 6" centerlines to sit right , not for the fait hearted  ;)
I'll see if I can get a pic of the finished result if anyone's interested , It looks much prettier  ;D

Sorry if I've kidnapped this thread , "whoops "
