The Cal-look Lounge

I remember this was the pinnacle of all that was wrong with the VW scene when I was younger. I look at this today, 20+ years later and still can't understand "why".

I believe the show rules were that all cars had to run, go forward and back up.

I remember this as the engine in Chris Addington's Ghia.  Not my taste....as you cannot drive and enjoy it.

Fixed it for you. I saw this car at the Oakland Roadster Show in the late 80s. It had a billet aluminum floor pan and it did run.

Welll something thats for sure.... Its a case of "I could do that!" YES you could but it doesn't mean you SHOULD!

The car reminds me of the early 80's movie "Tron".

One of the cars that influenced me to become a machinist. It is a fantastic accomplishment considering the technology of the day.

well your all right its Not Cal Look as we know it, but it is a Californian look.... and to be honest I kinda like it, the work that went into that is amazing, he could have spent the time on some stupid V8 but instead went for the VW route, very similar to when Bernie did his Ghia it wasn't VWs he was against it was the main stream hot rod guys and this car is in the same kind of field, forget about comparing to our VW's compare to a full blown custom and then it is very cool, All be It dated......

Anyway bring on the weird, its fun to be different or so they say !

I agree with this, i "kinda" like it in some weird way, but flip to Bernies ghia, i personally still think to this day, there has never been a car in the uk vw scene that has not only blown the doors open wide in the show car arena but in car customising full stop.  It stood the test of time, something a lot of show cars simply cannot do most end up on the samba 20 years down the line in a heap, it had it all, to me a landmark car in an era i grew up around vw's but if you looked at it now, it would still blow you away.

I'm not familiar with this car ... Bernie's ... could someone post some pics so us outsiders may understand the conviction?

The answer is obvious... "dare to be different" and engage in something where are no cardboard cut-out rules.  I'm sure somebody will  p*ss and moan and call me negative, but that was the reality of the '80s.  Not everybody wants to be in the same 'wolf pack' of guys that build their cars exactly the same way with very specific style parameters.  That being said, the guy obviously had (and from his posts on the Samba when he updated the car in the last couple of years) and still has more money than (in my opinion) common sense, but that seems to go with the territory in the car customizing/racing/building world.  I'd rather have the cash, myself.
