Title: REAL EMPI 8 : difference between VW & Datsun
Post by: speedwell on August 25, 2013, 15:32:15 pm
i never paid attention to detail a Datsun EMPI 8 to a VW EMPI 8

what are the difference between those wheels ???

i knew that those were only in 13" & 14" size for Datsun and the stud pattern was different  , but i had never seen these little boss (in red) situated inside the hole for the axle bolt and  for the bearing caps

any explanation about those littel boss ???...are those were made especially for the Datsun model ???

I actually have two of them in the Datsun bolt pattern. I bought them from a guy so saw my Bug and tracked me down to see if I was interested. Apparently he bought them for his Bug eons ago but never did anything with them. When I saw them I knew that they weren't the 4x130 bolt pattern, but for the price, I thought it would be an interesting thing to have as a conversation piece.

If you guys want photos sometime, let me know!

Apparently not all of them had them.

But these do

Maybe it's a 13" only thing

Those bosses that you see in that wheel don't make sense because the wheel isn't configured to need them.

That particular wheel was machined for the 4x4.5 pitch-circle diameter. However, those bosses made it possible to drill that wheel with other patterns like:

4x3 3/4 (Austin, Triumph, and Lotus)
4x98 (Alfetta, FIAT, and Lancia)
4x100 (BMW, Opel, Renault)
4x4 (Spridgets, Jensen Healeys, Opel)
4x4-1/4 (Alfa Romeo, Cortina, early Crapi, and Sumbeam)

Those smaller patterns required EMPI to machine the center boss smaller just as American Racing had to do to create 4 1/2-pattern wheels at one time. Without that extra material cast into the wheel they would lose their integrity. So why didn't EMPI just design the wheel to use a smaller boss and cap in the first place? The larger boss and cap made it possible to fit the wheels to cars with very large hubs like Corvairs and big MGs and Healeys.
