Title: Tapered fittings?
Post by: stretch on September 04, 2013, 08:15:09 am
Can you guys give a little advise please?

I've just bought a new fuel pump for my car & the instructions clearly state not to use any sealant on the tapered threaded fittings (it actually states it will damage the pump).  I've always used either PTFE tape or liquid PTFE to ensure leak free seals when assembling any fuel / oil system.  I'm after a few opinions from you guys as whether you think a sealant is necessary?

Thanks.

No, sealant is not necessary but I use it anyway to lube the threads. Just a tiny amount of thin Locktite thread sealant and I have never experienced any issues.

Use Loctite 'Lock'n'Seal' – designed for this. Lubricates the threads when tightening and remains slightly 'soft' rather than going hard like other Loctites.
I'd never assemble a tapered fitting 'dry' – too much chance of overtightening as you don't have any real 'feel'.
I think the pump manufacturers are more worried about excessive tape being used and finding its way into the fuel system.

I always use Loctite 577 it not only helps to seal it also prevents alloy fitting from galling if they get to tight during assembly.

Cheers.   :)

I'll pick some Loctite up later.
