Title: Wide 15" street tyres
Post by: UltraOrange67-2443 on September 05, 2013, 21:02:24 pm
I've been looking for a tyre to fit a 7" rim with a 60 profile.

Something like a 235 or 245, can anyone recommend one?

Cheers, Nick.

You must consider your overall diameter. Air-cooled Volkswagens tend to work best with tires between 25.5 and 26 inches tall. A 225/60-15 is 25.6 inches tall. A 235/60-15 tire is 26.15 inches tall which is a bit excessive with a wide tire like that. A 245/60-15 tire is 26.7 inches tall which is really giant.

The 235/60 and 245/60 are almost always wider than necessary and heavier than desired.

Finally, tire selection in the 235/60 and 245/60 sizes is very limited.

Instead, try the 215/65-15. At 26 inches tall it fills out the rear wells better than a stock-diameter tire. It offers enough tread to generate traction enough to break even built transaxles. It fits well on a 7-inch-wide rim. There are tons of tires available in that size too. If you want to maintain the stock 25.5-inch diameter then look at the 205/65. It's a bit narrower but it's going to generate enough traction for almost any need. It's also lighter and fits a 7-inch rim. There are lots of options in that size too.

Need a big tyre as I had Hoosiers fitted before and wider wings due to wheel offset.
Found a Pirelli P600 in a 235 60 15 that will work on the 7" rim

I agree that a 215/65 fits perfectly on a 7" rim. A 235/60 will also fit, but looks much better on an 8" rim.

I installed some 235's on the back of my turbo car and really like the look . The tires are BF Goodrich TA's , they are a little heavy but my main concern was how they rode and wear because I am actually going to drive this car , a plus was that they had matching front tires the size I wanted ( 155/15) . These are the numbers for the tires,

Enough tire for my grocery getter , Mike McCarthy

Had the 205 70 BFG's on some 6" years ago, found grip in the wet interesting!

BFG's are not known to handle well in wet conditions. They are a hard compound, extending wear very well. It's more less a trade off. Softer compound handles better but does not last as long.
I run Goodyear Eagle GT's on my rears and love them! Size is 205-65-15's and they are on 7 inch wide alloys. You will have to drop the rear end a bit so they tuck underneath the top of the fender wells. If not, they will stick out beyond the fender and I hated that look. I have em where I want em now. No fender mods at all!
