Something like this, and I boil the oil to remove the methanol from it, takes an hour or so to get it real clean, then turn it off about 20mins before the 1st pass of the day, the only pain is they are 110volt so I carry a convertor from 240v-110v. You can also get an aftermarket VW sump heater that goes on the outside and attaches to the sump plate, as sold in cold countries, not tried one for boiling oil yet though cheers Richie Title: Re: oilheater for sump Post by: bang on September 14, 2013, 11:10:06 am okay thanks.
think i want 2 then and mound tem in serie so 220v should be okay. Title: Re: oilheater for sump Post by: Lee.C on September 14, 2013, 11:47:39 am We have LOADS here in norway.... A place called "Hotshop" has a load of NoS/original heaters :)

Hi My mill is also on meth ;D The first season I was running without heater. Every cold start I had allot of Methanol in the oil resulting in terrible wear. Now I'm running a 1000W 230V heater. I'm heating the oil (8 Liter) up to 100°C which takes depending to ambient temperature from 25 to 60 min. When the engine fires up the oil heats the parts quickly and is dropping about 20-25°C. Because mine has 1000W which is really not to much that would be over 80 amps @ 12V ? MeXX Title: Re: oilheater for sump Post by: BeetleBug on September 16, 2013, 14:19:06 pm Any pictures Mexx? I thought a dish washer heater was basically a long cable and way to big to fit in sump.
Thanks! -BB- Title: Re: oilheater for sump Post by: MeXX on September 16, 2013, 14:36:17 pm I thought a dish washer heater was basically a long cable and way to big to fit in sump. -BB- Dear Kalle The long cable is basically for connecting the dish washer to the power supply. ;D ;D MeXX Title: Re: oilheater for sump Post by: JS on September 16, 2013, 14:39:10 pm I thought a dish washer heater was basically a long cable and way to big to fit in sump. -BB- Dear Kalle The long cable is basically for connecting the dish washer to the power supply. ;D ;D MeXX :D :D :D Title: Re: oilheater for sump Post by: BeetleBug on September 16, 2013, 14:49:29 pm I thought a dish washer heater was basically a long cable and way to big to fit in sump. -BB- Dear Kalle The long cable is basically for connecting the dish washer to the power supply. ;D ;D MeXX Dam!! Now you tell.. I tried my best to fit that dam thing inside my sump but gave up after a while and ended up using a 300W Defa one instead. Works excellent since I`m never in a rush. MeXX Hi Mexx an extract from my build thread below i did a bit of testing on the heater pockets to see if the heat was less concentrated at the tip and seams to work ok took about 30 mins to warm 1L of oil to 90 deg C (http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i149/gluemixer/c2798a28.jpg) (http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i149/gluemixer/b5665ed2.jpg) (http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i149/gluemixer/93a9fb73.jpg) thought i would weld in the heater pockets and give it a try (http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i149/gluemixer/8af0afa8.jpg) 20amps needed for all 4 plugs (http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i149/gluemixer/2015b493.jpg) and in one hour we have just over 90 Deg C and 50 Deg C in the oil feed line (http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i149/gluemixer/150380c5.jpg) so looks like that works :) cheers andy |
