Title: Info about this splitwindow?
Post by: Jordy/DVK on July 28, 2007, 13:51:02 pm

 Hey Guys,

Does anyone of you know whose car this is? I'd like to know more about it.
I'm working on my own split at the moment and I'd like to know what needs to be modified to fit later parts (gearbox) to a split pan.
I'd like to do it all without too much cutting/grinding and that's why I'm looking for some practical info regarding splits on this topic.

And those wheels, does anyone know what make they are. I was planning to use exactly that style of wheels (including the patina) for my split...

Oh and this is my wreck!!! ;D     (the trailer bitch  ;D)

to fit a synchronised gearbox you have to get a T1 bus nose cone and hockey stick (or modify a normal hockey stick from a synchronised gearbox) and the matching mount -you can get all of that stuff at csp-shop.de -it's just plug 'n play  :)

if you need more info just send me a pm and we can chat about it.

Ians car is top notch  8), wheels are ercos I believe with a subtle amount of detailing I just love em  :), as for bolting up later bits and bobs what do you need to know as I'm running a 2007 on a 5 speed 901 box with a slightly narrowed front end on my 49 . any mods are much the same as any work you should want to do on a later car , its just when you want any pre 53 bits the prices triple  :'( :o!
If I can be of any help feel free to pm me  :)

Thanks for the replies! Those media blasted ERCO's look very cool!!  8)

I'm looking forward to recieve the volksworld feature!!  8)
Allthoug it might be a bit outdated, I'm sure it'll contain a lot of info I could use...

Olaf, are all T1 nosecones the same or do I need a nosecone of particular years?
I'd be happy to learn more about modifying an old wreck for the strip...  8)

Cool  8)  How much did you narrow the front axles? When I mount a slammed oval front beam (I wont use the split one with the small towers) I don't think there's much more room left to narrow. Do you use dropped spindles?

Title: Re: Info about this splitwindow?

I used a 56 beam , and took 3" out of it to allow for the dropped spindles and the fact that I was running on 6" fuch's , these are now going in favour of some 4.5 so i will need another beam to do the business to this should only need about 1"3/4 -> 2" out of it this time . Don't really like to narrow if i can get away with it ( not very old school you see ) but i need the car to sit right with the dropped spindles

you'll need this one (http://www.csp-shop.de/shop/images/artikel/14895.jpg) and a screw that fits in the hole for the reverse light. i don't know if they were all the same but i think so.

speedwell -could you please also send me that article?

You still got cable on that old split cos you don't want to be going any place above 50 kph on those . Might be worth looking into running a later pan on it say post 64 to avoid any too early beetle problems ie gear box front mount no bump stops on the rear end and cable brake mods to accept hydraulic etc {been there done that}. I switched the rear end of mine over to a later unit even had to weld in later rear body mounts because I wanted to use shock absorbers , not the leaver shocks they came with .
You will also need to remove the engine bay side trays and lower fire wall and replace with later items as a 25 hp engine is shorter than the stoker motor you will want to put in these can be obtained from Steve Hooke at   http://www.hookyspanelshop.com/   he also does some great side panel's for access to those 48's I'm sure you will want to fit .

The Nose cones are easy to get its the hocky stick that is hard to find they are no longer made and  very hard to find used..  on my 58 I change the front trans frame mount to 61 and later type Wolfsberg west sells them for about $30.00  then you can bolt your trans right in without changing the nose cone easy to change cut off the old weld on the new it simple to do.

thanks for the article speedwell!  ;)

and the hockey stick -yes they are hard to find but you can close the original hole on it and drill a new one (you'll need one from a synchrone gearbox)

I was there when Ian made the cuts for the 5 Speed - scarey job on such an original split!

Ian's split has some serious attitude, I even reckon they look like each other ;)

I remember seeing that car at Bug Freeze many many years ago(11/12?) and it blew me away then.  I sure had fun living in England.  Bug shows there are so much different than here in the states.

Give Pete at CogBox a bell, i'm sure he put the 5 speed together or just bell Clarky. :)

I'm pretty sure the mainshaft is the weak link on a Berg 5 :)

The mainshaft of a Berg 5 is no weaker than that of a 4 gear.

will change soon when the berg 5 speed 091 bus box comes out
The Berg Bus 5 is based on the earlier 113/002 Bus 'box.
