Title: install cam=crank endplay disappears!
Post by: alex d on August 01, 2007, 08:49:52 am
I'm building a 1914 (yes the same that was supposed to be ready for EBI  ;D ), I had a problem with an out of round cam gear, so I put there a new one, and now the crankshaft has 0 endplay, in fact one of the counterweights hits the bearing saddle so it can't turn (flywheel is not in), any ideas?  ???

You can't check anything like this unless flywheel is on as it determines the end-float. It is common for a crank web to tuvh the case with no flywheel attached. Install the flywheel (you don't have to torque it all the way up) and check again.

I know I can't check crank end-play this way, but with the other cam gear the crank could move back and forth, with this one the crank is pushed all the way back and it just won't move to the front (with a reasonable force at least)

Sounds like you may have pinched a bearing. Check the bearings are located on their dowels correctly. Also, is the new cam gear marked -1, 0 or +1 (or +2 etc)?

I'm just mocking up it, so I haven't put the dowels yet, the gear is an aluminium taiwan special  ;D so it's not marked

I'd look for a decent quality one, for a start! If you're not using straight cut gears, then try to find an original VW one.

I'm not using straight cuts, all I can find are bugpack (that was the out of round one) or Empi (this one) ones, so it seems it's time to find a stock one and modify it to use bolts right?

I've been told that lapping the gears with valve grinding compound can "free" the gears, what do you guys think?  ???

Dont run That Cheap Crap in your Motor those cheap cam gears are China Specials  the teeth are not quite the same mesh as Original VW's and you end up with alot or alum, shavings floating in your engine, use a Modified VW cam Gear or a set of Magnum straight cuts (Like Gene Berg Always Said Buy the Best and Cry Once)
