Title: Copper Head Gaskets with 92mm thick wall
Post by: fish on November 16, 2013, 11:30:04 am

Whats the best Copper Head Gasket to use with 92mm thick wall cylinders in heads cut for 94 in turbo motor?

My plan was to use 94mm 0.060" Gasket with lapped surfaces, and some have suggested annealing the copper but my concern is the exposed surface of the offset stepped difference between the ID of the cylinder to the ID of the gasket causing some squish, turbulence and detonation issues.

I never figured out what the advantage was with the copper gaskets. I have only had decent results with them at best. I therefore never use them, and would not recommend anybody else to do either.

I've used 0.040" 94mm copper head gasket with 94mm cylinders with good results and no head leaks in 1915cc 9.5:1 engine 0.005" deck its just the different size thats worrying me, hopefully someone else has used them and can chime in.

If you think you need the gasket,
just make sure you put a 1mm x 45 degree chamfer on the inside edge of the barrel to remove the sharp edge.

This also removes the over hang of the chamber that is there with most CNC ported heads designed for 94's.

I would prefer to run gasket instead of large deck, the chamfer on the cylinders is sorted, thanks for the heads up Dave.
Might be ordering a set of custom ID set from Shawn, thanks Vince

I hate copper gaskets (especially on KTM SMs)
*sigh*
I can see the benefits on zero deck though, then deck height changes are quick and easy.

Bearing in mind I hate annealing copper all the time though   :D  does anyone make these gaskets in aluminium though?
Would it really be of any benefit or downside over copper? (probably not I guess?).

Just curious.
