Title: The Bitch (Black '67)
Post by: louisb on August 02, 2007, 13:54:34 pm

Just ran across this car on the JG54 Green Hearts site. (BTW, this club has some serious cars, but you guys already know that.) That car took my breath away. Any more pics? Motor specs? The cars story? Damn that car is sweet.

Thanks,

Firstly, thanks for the kind words on the club.

The "Black Bitch" is owned by Alex Taylor, he runs a VW workshop in Poole, UK called Defcon3 most of the work was completed by him. Inside is a VDM 14” steering wheel, DDS shifter, Autometer Sportcomp 5” tach, Autometer oil temp gauge, Autometer oil pressure gauge, seats are stock red basket weave.

Wheels are Porsche anodised & detailed Fuchs (4.5” & 6”), brakes: Single circuit master cylinder, front – VW disc brakes (Porsche 5 stud), rear – VW drums (Porsche 5 stud), there is a Defcon3 2” narrowed beam
with deseamed shock towers

Engine spec is:

2276cc (82 x 94)
Compression (9.5 to 1)

Mahle 94mm barrels & pistons
Scat straight cut timing gears
CB Performance lightweight cam followers
Web Cam 86B
Manton push rods
Berg 30mm oil pump w/relief cover
Empi 3.5 Qt wide deep sump
Cylinder Heads – CB Street Eliminators
Valves – stainless (42 x 37.5)
Scat dual springs, chromoly retainers
Ported & polished/chamber job
CB Performance 1.4 pro rockers
Head studs – CB chromoly 8mm
Weber 48IDA's w/short DDS manifolds and open velocity stacks

1 5/8” mild steel ceramic coated merged header

Engine built/installed/maintained by Pete at Funkenblitz & Alex at Defcon3

A super cool car!

There is a full article on the car in the Feb 2007 Cal Look issue of Volksworld. Loads of pics on the blog - www.jg54greenhearts.blogspot.com

Heydon's black 67 is another killer car. When they are both parked up together in the club display they look awesome...

Yeah I saw that one on the site too. Both are bitchen cars. Just something about black '67s that make my heart beat a little faster. Put burners on it and leave the original horn grills and you would have what I want my car to look like.

My only question is if you are going to run US spec front fenders, why not US spec rear tail lights?

edit: Doh!

I believe that in the UK only pre 1964 cars can run all red lenses, Alex is playing ball with the law ;). Heydon likes to live life on the edge, hence his all reds..

how come alex's cars always have 'fx' on the reg plates? (seen 3 like that on his cars)

is it now on an e reg?
(don't know why, but i prefur to see 67's on a 66 'd' reg plate!?! early 67!)

tom, the registration mark is the year of registration not manufacture.  VW would make there cars slightly out of phase with our reg system.  Silly I know but they just wouldn't change to making there cars from August to August.

It's probably down to the local DVLA office. All of his cars are registered at the same office when they're imported

I see a big engine here with dual quiet pack muffler setup.  Can someone who knows this car tell me more about the exhaust setup and hp's?  I really like the dual quiet pack setup but some tell me it is okay, others tell me I will loose hp...

Nicest set of 911 wheels I've seen on a Bug in a long time. The merged black exhaust look exactly like the one that FourTuned made me for my orange '66. What brand is that one, dare I ask? Really dig the anodized look of the wheels. Easy upkeep, too.

I was talking to him about it and think he said it was a thunder bird dual quiet pack

. . I'm sure someone else will confirm that the dual quiet pack isn't as 'free-flowing' as the modern turbo-type set up.... BUT, the (very) slight reduction in HP is more than compensated by the looks and [personally] the sound.  ;D ;D ;D

I like to hear the engine when driving an air-cooled.. not overpowered by the noise from the exhaust. These modern zorsts are too loud in my opinion... and the look is more 'Max Power / rice burner / minitruck'....

 (..sits down waiting for the back-lash   ;D :D  ;D)

Steve

And not forgetting that VW did use August to August Model Years, but in the UK we used January to January for our registrations UNTIL 1967 when they had a Jan-August and then onto August to August from then on. This is why E-reg cars are less common and you'll see quite a few '67s on D plates. The F-reg '67's you occasionally see are left overs sold on in the September of 1967.

I was more thinking of you trying to keep the noise down to a minimum Steve. The sonic boom as you break the sound barrier is enough on it's own...
