Title: Opinions on M&H racemaster 215/65 tires
Post by: Sam K on January 29, 2014, 18:06:07 pm
I'm looking for a better rear tire for my street/track '63 bug but I don't want to use slicks. I've noticed theses M&H tires on several bugs. Does anyone have any thoughts on them? Thanks!

Depends on home much driving you do. Around town, or freeway... Not as solid a feel as a good radial. Kinda squishy in the turns if the air pressure too low. Sticky compound picks up small rocks and throws them out the back!

They are bias ply so with radials up front they kinda suck on the street when I run front runners with them its pretty darn good though.  They are kind of fat on the side walls but fill the fenders aggressively.  At the track they hook quite well at 18 psi I've run mine as low as 13psi at the track usually end up around 15psi  a decent burnout and I'd say they hook as good or better than 6x26 slicks.

I've owned two sets of M&H 215/65's and have been happy with both pair.

They ride very nicely on the street with both 5.5" and 6" width wheels, and they get decent mileage (several years of usage).  As noted above, they are quite sticky, at least at the track, and will pick up every little pebble or piece of rubber.  On the street, they seem to dry out nicely though.

I've heard that they can be a bit sketchy in the rain, but I've only driven a few times in the rain and kept my speed down ;)

These are exactly the sort of answers that I was hoping for! I will be ordering a set soon.

I only ran them on dry pavement, worked fine. Lot of tire though height wise, these are with 6" rim fit well

If you want the "look" nothing beats the M&H or Hoosier DOT slicks.
If you are a little more street oriented, BF Goodrich have a variety of super street/drag radials that works very well. You might want to look into those before ordering.

As far as I know there are no BFG drag radials that fit a VW well.

I use them on my 62 Ragtop Looker and I'm happy with them. But you have to be very careful while driving in the wet!

Best looking rear tyre I think. Does anyone know if they would fit a swing axel beetle lowered one spline?

Yes that will fit, because i have 215-70-15 on a 6 inch fuchs wheel and lowered one spline.
Only i have this classic look tire of Avon.

My personal opinion is that you do not buy the MH DOT tire just for the looks. It is a drag tire made for the strip and it happens to be street legal. If you are after looks I would rather buy a vintage looking tire like the Avon above, Hoosier and many others.

Do these M&H 215's have the grip to put a full bodied bug into the 10's?
