Title: My new 56 project Post by: Larry S on March 03, 2014, 01:56:15 am Well I have been without a VW for several years now. I have been looking but I have not found the right project for the right price close enough to me to make it worth getting. A guy that use to work for me had a 56 oval for the last 20 years, 18 of which it has been torn apart. He has moved it several times. I told him after my last car was sold that if he ever decided to sell let me know first. He called me last weekend and said he was ready to let it go. I went yesterday and picker her up. The car is very solid. The dash is uncut, it still has all of the original fenders, 4 tab hood, and W decklid. I got the original trans and a spare 36hp motor (partial) and a partial 40horse I think. I also got the front end, seats, steering wheel, and all the glass. Overall I am very happy with what I am starting out with and I only paid $800 for the whole package deal! I am not sure the exact path for the car yet. I do want the front lowered, maybe wide five centerlines, and T-bars.

Title: Re: My new 56 project Post by: Larry S on March 03, 2014, 02:01:51 am Still had all four original fenders! ;D and they are in great shape, amazing....
It also had this roof rack on it. The rack appears old but I am not sure....might be able to sell it and get something else for the car. Title: Re: My new 56 project Post by: kev d on March 03, 2014, 16:58:43 pm Nice base 8)
Keep the pics coming! Cheers Kev Title: Re: My new 56 project Post by: Larry S on March 16, 2014, 13:18:50 pm I stripped the pan down and the powder coater has it now along with the springplates and some other parts. It is going to be semi-gloss black. My friend that I got the car from has been still digging more parts out from hiding for me, I told him to keep digging! The more he finds the less I buy and the more original it remains.
Title: Re: My new 56 project Post by: Pas on March 16, 2014, 21:44:27 pm Nice project and nice price too!
Cal Look all the way Larry, you know you want to ;D Title: Re: My new 56 project Post by: Larry S on March 23, 2014, 20:54:11 pm I built this dolly to hold the body. I plan on having the pan (when I get it back from the powder coater) sitting on jack stands while i work on it. This dolly should allow me to rollthe body over the top of the pan and roll it out on the driveway when I want to work on it outside. It should work good, we will see. [attachment=1]
Title: Re: My new 56 project Post by: Larry S on March 29, 2014, 02:08:22 am I got the pan and springplates back from the powder coater today. I went with gloss black and I think it looks good!
Title: Re: My new 56 project Post by: Larry S on April 27, 2014, 02:32:48 am I got my first order from Woflsburg west yesterday, lots of little stuff to start working on the pan, brake lines, springplate bushings, grommets, etc. I also picked up a sandblaster today for $50.00! This should come in handy. I also picked up an extra 36hp motor for cheap.
Title: Re: My new 56 project Post by: Larry S on April 27, 2014, 02:40:35 am I bought a heat gun and started removing the undercoating, it worked much better than I thought. I hit it with a sanding disc right after and it is cleaning up much easier and better than i thought.

I am going to do a lot of it myself (or at least try). I have always done the mechanical, wiring, and interior myself but not the bodywork/paint so this will be a first.....I am leaning towards strato silver. I have a few special ideas I hope to pull off....

Well like the pics above show I was able to get the body and all the other parts (except fenders) sealed and primed after they were media blasted. The body is at a friends place and we are going to start bodywork on it. I have been collecting parts as well. Not going as fast as I would like but between family and working not much time (or money). It is moving forward just slowly. Larry Title: Re: My new 56 project Post by: kev d on October 02, 2016, 23:35:22 pm Moving slowly is always better than not moving though Larry!

Frenchy Title: Re: My new 56 project Post by: Larry S on February 22, 2017, 02:00:05 am Thanks Frenchy, I have been collecting some parts. I hope to get the body back in a couple of weeks and start on the bodywork. I have some pretty cool parts going on the car, hopefully it will be nice.
Larry Title: Re: My new 56 project Post by: Larry S on February 25, 2017, 15:01:16 pm Some parts I have been collecting for the car. An old breather like I use to run on the black car, it will clean up nice. A Berg traction bar never been used, I ran one of those on the black car as well. and a Treuhaft deep sump, great condition, given to me by a great friend as a donation to the project.

Title: Re: My new 56 project Post by: Larry S on July 12, 2017, 14:20:36 pm I received the birth certificate from VW, the car was originally prairie beige with red leatherette interior....still pondering the color.
Title: Re: My new 56 project Post by: Frenchy Dehoux on July 13, 2017, 03:18:06 am Larry your project is looking great if you are looking for some particular parts let me know . Are you going to install a 36 hp back in it or going with a bigger motor with the IDA'S. Thanks Frenchy Title: Re: My new 56 project Post by: Larry S on July 13, 2017, 14:40:13 pm Thanks Frenchy,
I am going with a updated motor with IDA's. I originally was going 36hp with Okrasa kit but IDA's are just so awesome I can't help myself. I ran them for years on the street and nothing like them. I probably won't go to big, 1776 maybe, I want a weekend driver that I can enjoy. My old motor was a 1750 (69x90 npr's), 40x35.5 ported heads, Engle VZ73 cam, it was great. I am basically starting from scratch on the motor, would like to buy one done but so hard to trust anyone these days, I might have to buy the parts and build it myself, and that's ok too. I was going strato silver but leaning towards the Prairie Beige with red interior (original to the car), if the paint job is really nice I think it could look great. Beige has to be done really nice to pull it off..... Thanks for the encouragement, I have always enjoyed your cars and look at them as a goal for mine to turn out! Title: Re: My new 56 project Post by: kev d on July 13, 2017, 23:32:52 pm Looking good larry 8)

Larry, I'm sure I've posted this somewhere before, but I was once told to load the doors up with glass, wonders and seals when setting door gaps as it gives the correct weight and sag on the hinges. Did it on a car I was working on and the gaps came out perfect. Title: Re: My new 56 project Post by: Larry S on July 20, 2017, 13:16:53 pm Thank you Neil, good information!
Larry Title: Re: My new 56 project Post by: Larry S on August 02, 2017, 02:45:52 am I found a 22 year old berg 1 5/8" merge header and dual muffs that was never used. I use to run these back in the early 80's and like the look so I wanted to get the setup for my 56.
Title: Re: My new 56 project Post by: Jeff68 on August 02, 2017, 14:36:42 pm Nice Header and dual QP set! Best looking / fitting there is!
Title: Re: My new 56 project Post by: Larry S on August 02, 2017, 16:56:29 pm I agree, that's why I wanted this setup. I ran a wanted to buy add on the Samba for a year and had 2 people contact me, the first wanted way to much for it but this one was reasonable. I will get the muffs cleaned, sanded, and painted with header paint. I always liked how the Berg units tucked up compared to the others.

Larry Title: Re: My new 56 project Post by: Larry S on February 08, 2018, 22:24:25 pm I was given a 1975 bug motor for free so I have torn it down and the case looks nice so it should be a good base for my motor. I will be sending it out for machine work soon.
Title: Re: My new 56 project Post by: Neil Davies on February 09, 2018, 07:44:24 am Coming along nicely Larry. I was once told that late 1200cc motors are great as case donors, as they have the best factory oiling but the heads are so restrictive they can't be over-revved to knock the saddles out!
Title: Re: My new 56 project Post by: karl h on February 09, 2018, 08:04:42 am very nice project! have you decided on the colour yet?
Title: Re: My new 56 project Post by: Larry S on February 09, 2018, 13:52:15 pm I have gone back and forth on the color....originally it was Prairie Beige (with red interior) which if it is done right can look good. I like blue/silver and Strato Silver is correct for the year, and then there is always black.....My 57 oval that Russell Ritchie now has was black and beautiful. So I guess at this moment I am not 100% settled on the color yet.

My son went by to pick the fenders up from the body shop to get them blasted and they had already started the bodywork so that's a good sign! All four fenders (front bullet) ,hood, and deck lid are original to the car which is nice. I am going to gather all the parts that need to be painted with the car and deliver them next week while I am on vacation, taillight housings, glove box door, ash tray, etc.. I found a set of autocraft 1:4 rockers for a good deal and got those this week. It's like the Johnny Cash song, one piece at a time...... Title: Re: My new 56 project Post by: Larry S on July 21, 2021, 16:48:12 pm Larry what brand exhaust? Header and Dual QP's? It is an old Berg system, I found a NOS setup after a couple years of searching, I used to run these in the early 80's and they seem to fit the best. I have never found another one as good, although I have seen some old S&S that looked about the same. Title: Re: My new 56 project Post by: Brew 66 on July 22, 2021, 03:15:47 am Thanks I sold a car with an S&S last year.
I have the Berg header, need Quiet Packs! Damn they are hard to find. Title: Re: My new 56 project Post by: leec on July 22, 2021, 06:57:11 am When I was at Bergs around 5 years ago they still had the jigs, boxes and all the pipe work for the single and dual quiet packs. I said to Dee there would be interest in them if they made another batch. Maybe we should all start emailing them :)

Just curious, what was the issue and the fix for the magneto? Title: Re: My new 56 project Post by: Larry S on April 28, 2022, 12:31:19 pm I finally got the magneto working good, sounds bitchin and runs great. Just curious, what was the issue and the fix for the magneto? I had the wrong wires, wrong heat range plugs (had 9 needed 7), and the wrong gap, was way to wide, mags like a smaller gap....besides that it was fine.. LOL. I bought a set of wires from Joe Hunt also and it fired right up, I have the timing set better now and it is very responsive. I can give you both names if you want.
