It's a car that nobody knows anything about. Won't give too much away as i don't want to tempt fate (like submarine attack mid-Atlantic...), but it's fresh, all the right bits in the motor and trans and had a full body-off rebuild.

And in answer to Mr Volksman, one way or another, yes... ;)

After the Buddy Hale car was parted out, Matt sold it.  The new owner has put the car whole again and is driving it.

Matt parted that car out? Any reason why? Did the new owner put it back together the way Hale built it? I always liked that car.

That car was pretty neat, and fast too.  Before the VW Classic in 2001, Buddy and I took the car for a quick spin around the neighborhood.  He got really loose, and I thought we were going to hit the curb as we drifted.  All I could think was, I hope I'm thrown out the sunroof, clear of the car when it rolls.  He saved it, and we drove home about 15mph shaking like leaves and giggling like schoolgirls

Roger Crawford from Heads Up! razzed Buddy one day when they were cc'ing the heads.  "This thing run on Arco 87?"  Car was going 11.90's with 9-1 compression.  Buddy thought the motor was setup on kill.

The last time I saw the car was when we delivered it to Redding to it's then new owner.

Are you sure about that Bruce.  As I recall, Buddy never ran that car on the strip.

Buddy ran it in DRKC at Sac in '02.  Broke it in Vegas the next month.  Sold it to Deaf Jimmy the next month.  Somewhere I've got a stack of buildup pics.  The creme pan still is an oddity to me. And Dave, Buddy tried to kill me, not Bruce.

I recently finished putting the ex Buddy Hale 55 back together, the poor thing had really been through the wringer. It now has a 9.5 CR  K-Roc 2332 w. S/E heads, 48's, A1 exhaust etc. All brand new, no corners cut. Disc brakes, FF BRMs, and BUMPERS!! ;)  The owner has an extensive car collection, including a new Z06 502 HP Corvette, a 396 SS Impala, 4 other VW's etc, and is happiest in the 55.  BTW, Buddy raced it a number of times, including getting his butt kicked by me at Sac in 2002.. ;) It was around 13:1 CR IIRC.

The 'sneak peak' pics and the pic of Shaun Geers car show one thing that would suggest they are not the same car... Indicators on top of the wings.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure Fastbrit wouldn't buy a car with side trim on it. ;)   

He likes side trim really, he's just not addmitting it!, told you, you'll all want some!  LOL

Owned lots of cars with side trim. Depends on what you want. If I was to buy or build a Looker in the '70s style, then I'd personally opt for no trim. If I was going to build or buy a sleeper, then the trim would probably stay intact. Must admit to not liking indicators on wings, though! That may have to change, even if the side trim doesn't!  We'll see. This is one reason why I never built a hot rod – I like too many different styles and could never decide on what I wanted (flathead-powered hi-boy? Hi-tech '34 3-window?). Same with VWs – my first love is the no trim, classic Looker, but I also love cars like Bill's, I love Pro-Stockers, turbo cars, vintage... I don't become emotionally attached to cars and many have come and gone throughout my life. I've had far more pleasure out of owning and racing a variety of VWs than I ever would from owning the same one for years. We're all different – and thank heavens we are! :)

Keith can you tell me where you search for vw like the one you're planning to buy on the net?

For the most part, it's a case of using contacts and keeping your ear to the ground. You can check the for sale pages on websites such as this one, thesamba.com or cal-look.com, or even on eBay. There's no one place you can guarantee to find the car of your dreams – it's often just luck, or being in the right place at the right time.  :)

Yup, a roof-rack, fender skirts, Coke cooler, swamp cooler and a sun visor over the screen. What Bill S and I call a mobile yard sale. Needs an IDA motor to drag it all around. :D

Whatever car it is, it'll be good to see you back in a VW again, bought or built - it doesn't matter. Trim or, shaved like a porn star - it doesn't matter.
As for keeping it for years - who gives a toss?
 I've had mine for years, so has Bill, Dave Mason, Hector Bonilla, Dave Rhoads and numerous others.
Then you've got Arnie who had his for decade.
Luckily, not all California Look fans hang on to their cars - as it means people simply buy a good car and enjoy it without even having to find the car, the parts and all the other things associated with the build.   
I would say that I'm emotionally attached to my car, it has been part of my life for 16 years, and some of the parts have been with me since before then. Ultimately, it's 'only a car', but it's my car, and if I sold it I wouldn't have it anymore, and sorry, but I couldn't accept not owning it.
I truly hope you enjoy your new car, it's been a long time since you had a VW and it's obvious that it has been the missing link in the chain, and this was driven home at EBI.
I'll be happy to see you rolling into the stage in your new car.

That's a perfect car for a bit of judicious detailing , nice price too and the part's list in the engine is to die for , Udo Becker Lifters and the like sounds like its got the lot in there !
Should keep you busy over the winter Keith , cant wait to see what it looks like come the spring , but i dont think you will be doing too pub car parks with a spool in the back end  ;D

Keith that car is from my neck of the woods. Very nicely done. Hard to believe a car from Motown will be going across the pond. I only saw that car one time in my life at the Michigan Bug out 2 years ago. How long before it comes of the boat?

Hi Matt – so, someone HAS seen the car! I found just one photo of it on the net, taken at the Manassas Bug Out, which shows the rear end of it on th startline, that's all. After looking at the detal photos and talking with the guy, I have every reason to believe this is a sharp-looking well-built car. It was collected last week and is being shipped from New York, so should be with me by mid-end September. Here's hoping!

Get with Dave Conklin. He was taking photos that year and might have taken the picture of it coming off the line at Milan Dragway. I didnt think it had gone to Mannasass. It seemed like the car came out and then dissapeared.
