Title: Irs axle lenght question ??
Post by: mr horsepower on April 03, 2014, 16:31:24 pm
Hello as my diff in the autobox sits of centre i need to make two different length of axles .
Now i want to know how can i determite the proper length of the axles
Flange to flange is 36 and 43 cm but does it protrude or keep it back
can someone measure it on a stock irs bug ?
So i will have the dimentions
what i try to do is take 4 golf 5 gti long side axles  i only need the the trans side these splines are the same as the 944 cv joints
the  are 42 mm in dia hollow tube .
Cut them to lenght  make a insert on the lathe so the will slip fit and then have them welded.

Any advise is welcome

What I have done on the Fiat and now on the Ghia is get the axle stub and the trans hub level -- this will be the shortest distance needed -- then measure from the bottom of each -- take this distance minus 5mm and that is the axle length I order
