2" works fine, with drop spindles.

It depends on how wide tires you are going to use on them. I have fitted 6" fuchs to the front of four vw's and have never owned a narrowed beam.

145/80/15s and drop spindles with stock discs drilled for 130pcd

I used 185/60, same height as a 145 but wider. Fit was perfect.
145 will be quite stretched on a 6" rim.

I have used 145/80/15" on stock linkpin beams with a 17mm thick adapter. On 6" fuchs 36ET. I love the way it looks.

To each his own. I prefer the tire to at least be slightly wider than the rim for protection and looks. ;)

Not to mention handling and braking...  ;)

I think a lot of it depends on the drop spindles you use and how much they move the wheel outward. Many of them move the wheel out as much as 3/4" (19mm) per side. In this case, the 2" narrowed beam would move the wheels back close to stock position.

The Fuchs have a pretty good offset to the inside. Even so, maybe with a beetle, you can get away with a stock beam. My experience has been with a Ghia, and with that you need the 2" beam so the tires don't hit the fender arch.

I've run a 135 and a 145 on 6" wheels. No es bueno! There are some nice low profile tires with a wider tread that would work pretty good. Made for Smart cars.

I ended up sending the wheels out to be narrowed.

I've got 16"x6" teladials on a stock beam and needed a 13mm spacer to get them 'right' on my ghia
