Title: Carb'd nitrous fuel set ups (advise needed please)
Post by: Black_65 on May 31, 2014, 23:42:09 pm
Hi All,

Im in need of some direction on fuelling set up on VW's on NITROUS running carb motors. 1st I'd like to say sorry for posting this topic on 'cal look lounge' but wanted to get an over picture on what to do.

Ok so I have a 2165cc and looking to run a 50hp short of nitrous for strip use (car still road legal, we'll until next year) and when I designed/built my set up I planned on using a Facet fuel pump on an 8mm line to a regulator with x2 outlets.

So the 1st outlet goes to my 2nd fuel regulator set at 2.5psi as my 48 dellortos don't like higher psi over wise they flood from the top. And the 2nd outlet goes to a lock off valve with a gauge set at 7psi for the nitrous jet choice. So the reason I'm asking for so detection is that I went to set the fuel using my jets and the regulator is not adjusting!.
So looked into the issue more thinking it was the regulator but  I think my fuel pump is not man enough for the job or I've got the whole thing wrong.

I've been advised by Bernie (stitch up) and Danny (lil lizzy) to look at running a 2nd fuel pump and regulator for the nitrous set up and wire it up with the micro switch to work the fuel when needed.  But this would need a second line to work...

So what I'm trying to get at or find out if it could be done with the set up I have but with a better fuel pump to run at a higher psi then use the fuel regulators to dial in 8 for the nitrous fuel and 2.5 for the carbs. Or could I T-piece into the main line at the back of the car with a 'lock off vale' and run the 2nd fuel pump and regulator that way?

Thank you all for your help and input but will be interesting what will work as not everyone has efi and nitrous ;D.

Clarkey

You got good advice from 2 people racing with nitrous who have learnt what is needed. That should be enough but here's my thoughts anyway :)

One good pump and 2 good regulators will do it, the best facet I could see was only rated up to 6psi, or is there a pump I didn't see? I personally don't think they are up to the job that you want it to do. Just to be clear they are not a good pump for this combo in my opinion :o

It will probably be cheaper to run a 2nd line and have a 2nd pump, why do you think you need a lock off valve? I cant see a reason to have one in either system.

Try planning for growth, if you want to run 50hp of nitrous then make the system at least good enough for 100hp, maybe even 150, it will work well turned down, but will more likely fail if its on its limits ;) the priciples for carbs and EFI are the same for the nitrous part, its just fuel and oxygen

And you are racing it. and this is the pure racing section so seems the correct place to me :)

cheers Richie

Thank you for your comment Richie  ;D.

I don't think it was toughs out right when I built it lol.

I like the idea of running a good pump with a higher psi and flow rate to handle fine with the 2 regulators, but like you said upgrade it to run 100-150 shot system and by having a 2nd pump and regulator. It could be wired up to operate when the nitrous is 'armed'  so it's not running all the time.

The reason for the lock off valve, I thought it would be a safe mod to stop, the fuel flow to the fuel solenoid. When driving on the road.

You have a separate switch to turn the nitrous system on? if so use that to a relay to turn the 2nd pump on at the same time, that way you know you cant use it without the whole system being armed, with a valve its something else you might forget to turn on

I ran one pump with a T with the nitrous on the cab, I was just starting to run out of fuel at about 140-150hp of nitrous level but that was more the pump than the -8 fuel lines but the fuel pressure went to the nitrous fuel solenoid all the time and never had an issue with it with 1000's of road miles

I was thinking that Richie, fitting a t-piece at the back of the car on the main line to a 2nd pump and reg.

Or upgrading my fuel pump at the front of the car with more psi and flow rate to work well with both fuel regulators. That way it's less messing about for this season etc.

Also if I do run a 2nd line, can they be mounted under the car? Ie like a steel fuel line?

I think that's the way to go  ;D,  what fuel pump would you recommend Richie? To run the set up I have with carbs

cheers Richie

I might try your route running 1 pump.

So running 8mm I.D lines, to run with carbs and nitrous upto 100hp shot  :D

ive got an 044 you can have that will give you loads of fuel but you would need a return line as its a high pressure pump

Something like this

or this

and this would just about get it done, and more budget friendly

The discussion 1 pump or 2 is as old as 'What defines a street car'  :) Both keep cropping up every now and then
