Don't buy a greatest hits album, you will miss out on soooo many great songs. As of right now I have 42 Grateful Dead albums not including albums by Bob Weir's Ratdog, Phil Lesh and Friends, Garcia & Grisman (Old and In The Way), The Jerry Garcia Band, Dylan and The Dead and various tribute albums. I you feel inclined to buy a Greatest Hits type album -What A Long Strange Trip, Skeletons From The Closet and Hundred Year Hall are good. You can usually find them on Ebay for pennies to a buck or two. My favorite albums today are Live From Mars Hotel and The History of The Grateful Dead Vol 1. (Bears Choice). There are a few I really don't care for, Infared Roses -Way to psychedelic and Built to Last (yuck)

Now i'm really getting curious, since i know nothing bout the Dead, and i should because my production year was 55, but they didn't get much air here in the Netherlands. Like a wrote, any costs will be taken care off. And YES, for me Joe Walsh was at his best, and the production of the album still rocks for me. Loads of limiters and compressors. You can still turn this album up and its just sounding better (neighbours ???) Tend my Garden...Now thats a Hammond.

I made a mistake: It's "James Gang Live in Concert"  (Carnegie Hall). But the cover (the one with the horses) shows a poster on the wall reading: James Gang Rides Again. For the last 30 years thats the album name for me...(If you want it i can burn it) Just checked overhere, the Studio of Rides Again was never released here. So digging time.

Its usually the XM "Willie's Place" or "X-Country" channels for me, or check out www.accuradio.com.  I listen to the "Twang" channel for alternative country stuff.  They play lots of Bloodshot Records' artists.

If its CDs, I have my usual rotation of Elmore James, Son House, Paul Burch, Sunny Sweeney, Drive-By Truckers, and others.  Depends on the mood, really.

Just played Europe '72, I can only do something with the Disc 2 tracks. As of Truckin', Epilogue, Prelude i can do something with it, but it's all very, very slow. I'm gonna put it in my Golf for a couple of weeks to get some feel to it.

Don't know what will be in the player tonite, guess the Dead mixed me up!

Yeah the Dead has some really drawn out songs, some as long as 36+ minutes. From Ramble on Rose-"Im gonna to sing you a hundred verses in ragtime, I know this song it aint never gonna end."

It's definitely not like Tool or Rage Against The Machine or even the Ramones. It's way mellow, kinda bluesy, kinda jazzy, kinda old timey, kinda bluegrass, kinda psychedelic at times and kinda country at times. Really hard to put them in a particular genre. Not one of their songs sound like another. They are easily distinguishable from the next. They really did their own thing and didn't play "Pop" music. They didn't have pressure from their record labels to play certain types of music to sell records by the millions. They did what felt good and what they liked.

Give it time and you'll fall in love with their music and appreciate what true artist they were and are.

Hey John, youre right, but when i started to buy albums i went the Led Zep, Deep Purple, Iron Butterfly, Sabbath, Pink Floyd, etc. way. The Dead did not get much Airplay overhere. (if any). So i have to adjust my (rock)roots a little bit. BTW. Received James Gang-Rides Again and Yer today. Damn, Walsh was fantastic in those days. The only old album i have for years is the "live at Carnegie Hall". Great to hear that stuff in the studio. But its also great how he combined studio tracks together on the live-album. Have a good weekend and future engine build.

That song always takes me back to the halcyon days of DKP in the early '70's.  Thursday nights were almost always spent at a place called Pinwinnie's Ironfoundry in Fullerton.  They had a small dance floor and a great band that went by the name of Churchill.  The place ROCKED on Thursday nights...and there was always a chance of a good street race or two out in the parking lot!  Anyway, Churchill had a three piece horn section and those boys cooked on the Sly tunes...just the best.  We'd leave at 12:30 am, get in my noisy-ass 63 with our ears ringing and try to muddle through work on Friday.  Boy, I miss the old days sometimes... 8) ;)

Watched the Stevie Ray Vaughan "Live Fron Austin Texas" DVD last night just to get the 'ol batteries recharged...the man's still the best IMHO.  8) 8) 8)

I saw that on PBS years ago and bought it as soon as it was available on DVD. He fucking jams, especially on the second half, were he isn't so green and nervous and just plain gets down. I thought his fingers were gonna bleed. I think I'll put that in right now :)

Got "Handbuilt by Robots" yesterday, by Newton Faulkner. Nice acoustic album, nothing like what I normally listen to! His version of Teardrops by Massive Attack is very good!

I've got that...I think it is on VHS!  I like Voodoo Chile from the first half.  SRV is one of the few that can cover Jimi and not murder it.

Just listened to a great interview with Robert Plant and Allison Krauss. They have a collaborative album coming out the end of October called Raising Sand. They're an unlikely pair , but boy does it work. They've got some really good music, loved everything  I heard.

She said she was intimidated to work  with Plant because he has a much wider  vocal range. The two sound incredible together, I can't wait till the albums out!

For me the: No Quarter"Album. But lets not make this a Zep Topic...

I went for electro grooves in the shop today...

Your going to make my brain fry on that one; I really don't have a definite answer. I lean toward the "3" album because it has such a broad range of talent, Coda because of the obscure but real great show opening songs ie We're Gonna Groove, Walter's Walk, Ozone Baby, etc. Physical Graffitti, because Kashmir captures everything the band is about. Physical Graffiti also shares alot of the groups experiencs on tour ie Sick again, one of my all time favorites about one of the groupies. So I guess the short answer to favorite album would be , all of them.

The first album is great because it shows the newness to me of how Page mixed the tracks . Plant was originaly hired to sing along with guitar. The music was to showcase lead guitar and drums, and Page wasn't even sure he was going to keep Plant around for the next album. That changed quickly in the response of the fans on tour to Plants vocals. Page was no dummy and started mixing tracks with Plant being the dominant force.

BBC sessions is my favorite too. Real raw and dirty early Zeppelin, not overly produced, perfected and tweaked in a studio. I love all the bluesy overtones too.

Just burned your CDs Harry. What a nightmare! First I had problems with my computer running r.....e......a......l..slow, then the hard drive crashed, I had a bunch of problems trying to back-up everything, then I could not access my music in the partitioned back-up of my hard drive, had to reinstall the entire Windows operating system twice, got everything straightened out but my music was kinda scrambled, then my saved playlists got wiped out by my kids and finally Windows Media Player would not burn the brand of discs (Sony) any longer after using this brand exclusively for 3 years. So I had to venture back into my partitioned hard drive back-up and retrieve Nero.

I couldn't just burn 1 disc for you Harry, so I burned you 3. 1 disc would not do the Dead justice.These are in no particular order and musical genres change with every song.

still stuck on Man and the Journey concert from 1969....Pink Floyd (Concertgebow, Amsterdam)

Probably Floyd's (mainly Waters') first venture into conceptual pieces of music, composed of a number of suites or songs (much as Dark Side of the Moon, and The Wall were). Not totally sure what Waters' aim was here with Man and Journey, but I think it simply dealt with a day in the life... including waking up, working, doing "it", falling asleep, and experiencing some terrifying nightmares (many of Floyd's studio songs were re-titled and musically slightly changed for the concept....with titles such as "Beset by Creatures of the Deep" (actually version of "Careful With That Axe, Eugene"), "Nightmare" (version of "Cymbaline"), and "Labryniths of Auximines", which featured a haunting "footsteps" sequence that was played through various loudspeakers around concert hall to give a sinister effect and "scare" the audience. Overall, it is a nice piece of music for the early Floyd fan. Very cool to hear live and heavy versions of songs like Cymbaline and Green is the Colour.

Are you a fan of Syd Barrett's own stuff? I've got a boxed set with a bunch of out takes and whilst there's some good stuff on it I can't really sit down and listen to it for that long. Early Floyd's a different matter though, off to drag out 'See Emily Play' when I get home.

Sometimes...  I do. Songs like "Baby Lemonade", "Terrapin", "Swan Lee"...all good songs, but I need to be in the right mood for Syd's solo stuff. Musically, it doesn't have the range and texture of what he did with Floyd, but some of it is the work of a mad genius
I remember a trip to Death Valley in my old Vanagon with sheep and my ex-girlfriend...we were all off in some other cosmic orbit, tripping on all the funny colors and listening to Syd. Wild memories. Frank ended up missing all night, and said he found an old airport, and was chasing coyotes around.

How is that new Plant/Krauss disc?  Unlikely pair—I'm interested to hear how it works?

I may be the only fan of real country western here, but f.y.i. Porter Wagoner passed away Sunday night at 80 years old.  He had just been diagnosed with lung cancer.  I had just gotten to see him at the Grand Old Opry this past April, and glad I did.  One of my favorites.

Who said real country? Hank III, Wayne Hancock, Hank sr., Patsy Cline are on my list.

I dig it. Real mellow, but that is expected of Alison Krauss. My favorite so far is Through The Morning, Through The Night and Trampled Rose.

Watched a John Mayall "Austin City Limits" concert last night.  It was recorded in 1993 but just released on DVD this year.  Coco Montoya was on guitar...this guy is unbelievable if you've never seen or heard him play and Mayall himself was outstanding.  At one point he's playing the T-3 Korg (keyboard) with one hand and blowing the harmonica as well as singing and girating around to boot...all at the same time!  Well worth the $15 for the disc.  8) 8) 8)

Sonny Landreth's Grant Street album.  Sort of like a Louisiana born Jeff Beck.  Good stuff!

Sat night I was dozing off and surfing channels on cable TV and found the best rock documentary I've seen, on The Who. Don't know the title or much else but it chronicled the band from their very early days as The Detours and The High Numbers, through their "mod" era in Sixites London, all their hits like "Pictures of Lily", "the Kids are Alright", "Magic Bus"...etc, their innovative destruction of instruments at closing of show (talk about ANGST), the Tommy rock opera, "Who's Next", "Quadrophenia"...etc....all the way through and past drummer Keith Moon's untimely death.
Lots of cool interviews and footage of the early band, absolutely electrifying....Moon's animal-like drumming antics, Townsends trademark windmill arm strumming, Entwhistle's skeleton outift....it was awesome. No other rock and roll band could light an audience up with sheer energy quite like The Who.

Hey John, have The Dead on the garage-player for a week. I like the 2cnd and 3rd cd best. Have not got the time to really dig in to the songs, i just keep the stuff rollin', just to get the feel. But one thing i noticed, a lot of American bands got influenced by them, or the other way around. Hope your mailbox is gettin' something from me really soon, or i will be burning again for you. Doing the 80's thing with "Pour some sugar on me" right now.

This song always reminds me of my first date. It was playing when I was driving to the movie theater to meet my date. We saw "Dirty Dancing". I had made the mistake of telling my best friend which movie we were going to see. So he shows up some other friends and sits towards the front. Just as the movie is getting ready to start he stands up, in a crowded theater, and yells at me asking how the date is going. My date literally tried to crawl under her seat. We never went out again. I heard from some friends a few days later that she was complaining because all I talked about durring the movie were all the old cars. (I nearly cried when he broke the window on that 57 Chevy.  :'(  )

Les Claypool of Primus was turned down as the Cliff Burton replacement for Metallica because they told him he was too good. That man can strum the hell out of a bass, and catch a hell of a lot of bass.

You seen the Metallica "Some Kind Of Monster" DVD? It's got some of the auditions for Jason Newstead's replacement on it - Pepper Keenan from Corrosion of Conformity, Twiggy Ramirez from Marilyn Mansons band and a few others were filmed playing, but Robert Trujillo was awesome. Lars said that he hadn't seen anyone play so fast with his fingers rather than a pick since Cliff. I saw Metallica twice with Newstead and once with Trujillo, but I also saw him with Suicidal Tendencies and was impressed then too!
Never got into Primus too much - very talented musicians but sometimes seem to be too clever for their own good.

Stevie Ray Vaughan's newly re-released DVD Pride and Joy...a collection of eight electric MTV vid's followed by three MTV accoustic tunes played on a 12 string guitar.  Everyone knows this guy is the shit on electric, but he's off the charts on the twelve string accoustic.  Seems like I scored this for less then 10 bucks from Amazon...well worth it for 70 minutes of tunes!

3 man band I was in (drummer) in high school. At one point, we used a zither amplified to the point of distortion, played with a slide. It was an interesting time.

Drummer ? What Kit? I banged on a (double base) Ludwig for years. (Zep-Bonzo) ;)

yes Part Ludwig! I don't remember what else. It was scrapped together and patched and borrowed and broken. Only floor tom, snare, bass, hi-hat and one crash (I used it as ride too).

After the zither, we graduated to an Ibanez bass and electric. It was just a way to waste time in a garage and piss neighbors off. When we weren't making horrible noises we'd stage horrific fake bicycle accidents out in the street. Rip up a t-shirt, splatter fake blood everywhere, lay the bike on top of ourselves, take a wheel off and throw it up in a tree, wrap chain around our neck and wait for the soccer moms to drive by. It was hilarious. They'd see all the blood and lock the brakes up and scream in horror....  ;D
