The Cal-look Lounge

as you know on this forum there's some (old) guys  ;D ;D , and those guys were in famous cal look vw club like DKP,DSK,DVB, etc.... now i will post some pictures of car club
may be you them former members of these clubs, can you, us to write or remind these cars  ::)
and where are the guys ( still in the vw scene) and where are the car  ???

I count on you to still make us dream of this period (70's) that we didn't live, that we continue to realise  ;)

I usually don't like yellow cars but that oval looks right on. There is a yellow used on Saturn cars that I always thought would look good on a bug.

Car was not Yellow it was the same Color As Keith Goss's Chop Top Bob Ran A 1700 Motor  with and engle 120 Cam ,Berg Specials 42 Dcnf Webers,010 Dist, also had Plaid Interior, and a Motormeter Dash Grill with Gauges also Original Empi 5 Spokes, Martins Car and Bobs Car were Both on The Cover of Hot VW's Cal Look Issue, Martins car had a 1776 motor  Kadrons Carbs,he Also Had The Rear Seat Delete From My Old Red 67 (former Scott Bakkens Car)

and now gary aka shubee and matt jahr cars matt has a red 64 sedan with 2.0l fuchs , 1600 cc with kadron engine rear was lowered why  ???

That oval was for sale on thesamba a year or two ago. It was in untouched condition, I remember the interior very well.

Oh, and that sepia brown car with the porsche nipples is BADASS!!

The Front Seats and Rear Seat Delete in Martins Car Came Out Of  Scott/Shubee's Red 67 I put a Full interior in the Red Car Black with Red Plaid inserts,Swapped the Wheels to Alloys Went Threw The Motor Detailed the Engine compartment and under the hood.

Seeing all the old photos of fellow DSK member cars made me do a little looking.
The yellow kabriolett is Shubees.The white '67 is mine. The BRM's are real, the motor was a 1776 with dcnf9 webers, Engle 110.
The early Karmann is my '53. Same motor was later used in my '67, as were the BRM's.
I'll have to get busy digging as I do have some other photos of a few DSK gatherings.

Hard to see, but along with the '53 Karmann, the Ghia was also a car the Shubee owned...A REALLY nice '69 ghia.
The blue car was a oval chop top that fellow member Grant Greven owned. His famly ran WAGONMASTERS in San Dimas CA and were long time friends of the Berg family.

That yellow mike martinez car is killer, so it that red vert with brms. I dont really like verts but that one has the look!!

Any info on the blue oval in the background of the red vert pic?? Looks like it has the bumpers removed and a vert decklid also. ???

Well. I did find that '67 kabriolett in a salvage yard in Sun Valley CA, but my friend Larry owned it. The BRM's did belong to 3 of us- Larry's  5, my 8, and Len Hedge's 8. The photo was taken at an OCIR BUG-IN on what would have been the 91st birthday of
Adolf H.

The Only Car I ever Owned with Kadrons Was the Tan 69 with 8 Spokes the Blue Oval had a 1700 with 42 Dcnf's and my yellow Convert had a 1700 with a Complete Empi 40 DCN carb Setup, Everything Else I Had I ran 48 IDA's On  Thanks Speedwell For Digging out Some Pictures of Are Old Club Cars and Members  I will Look Threw my Old Pictures and see what I can Find I Have Alot of Old Bug In Pictures  both Car Show and Race Cars from the mid 70's and early 80's  The Most Members DSK ever Had was 27 We Only Had Bettles and A few Ghia's In The Club even tho Both Me And Scott Owned Type III's  Scott had a Show Notchback red with 8 spokes and I Had A Show Squareback with 8 spokes 4 wheel Disc's but We Both Had Bettles to.

In 1975 Hot Vw's Had an issue on the Orange County VW Clubs It showed A Ton Of VW's  Caravaning the Streets of Orange County it Gave The Address's to there Club House's Since at the time I worked at Auto Haus in so I thought I would take a trip Down and check out DVB's Club House I Looked in the window and saw all The Trophes the Club had one there meetings were heald on Sunday Evenings so me and a friend Ron Went to Check it Out It was Cool So We decided to Join a few weeks Later Scott and Leonard Joined then Carlos we wer in DVB about a Year and in 1976  about Ten DVB Members Left And Started the New Club DSK (DER SELTEN KAFERS) within A Few Weeks we were up to about 20 members all with nice cars even tho DVB was a well known VW Club it had BUSES,Super Beetles Bajas Ect. So We Wanted to Get Away From That And Keep the true Cal Look Going We All Liked The Early DKP,DRF,DRA,Cars Where the MOTO was Quality not Quanty That Is What We Went By.  just a small history lesson  LOL ;D ;D

Steve Walker Has Been in DSK Since we Started the Club in 1976 He still owns this 53 Convertible Lic Plate tell's is All Ol Ragu Steve Ran Original Empi BRM's Bolted up to a set of Polished 356A Brakes all around,the motor in Steves convert was a 1700,engle 110 Berg 40x35 Heads,010 Dist. 42 Dcnf  Webers (BERG SPECIALS) 4 Tuned exhaust with a single QP. Steve also owns a 53 Split window and a Lotus White 67 Cal LOOK which Will Sport a set of Original Americans,Weber Motor,and Other Cal Look Mod's, Steve is Planning on showing his 67 at the classic 20__, Steve is a Painter by Trade and was once teamed up with Larry Rick and had a Shop In Glendora Ca, (European Body Werks) but both have moved on now Steve Lives in Las Vegas now and Larry is a Body man at a Local Body Shop in Glendora. We are three of the Original Members of DSK we still have the Club Decals And had Club Shirts remade DSK will Live On Till We Die. We see other old Members from time to time but most have moved on to other things in Life.

That Black Ghia is not the same Car, the Black car has the nose emblem still there the side mirror is on the door it has 15 inch alloys and interior is way Different, Roger had the First K Ghia Plates which were blue and Yellow and he had them painted Black and Yellow I have seen the Grey Ghia 100's of times and the Black one is nice but it is not Half the car the grey one was

The black ghia is the same car .Lenny Copp bought it & painted it black & changed it around a bit.  It is currently in Japan.  Lenny still has the K GHIA plates.

Lenny dose nice work but the car looked way better when Roger Owned it

some another DKP car here's harvey rosenthal 66 , the car was on the june 77 cover with  other car club  ,watch at place of the horn grill there's some turn light signal but not lucas , on the cover there's also randy welch (red with ragtop) , mike o'neill (black with centerlines) , the yellow and the red with fuchs i don't know who owned  it ??? and for the butternut , she's still exist today

The turn signal, on the car ar VW Back up Lights they cover the Horn Grill without welding up the Hole Scott Bakken also had these on his first 64 Cal Look

This Car Belongs to Don Metzs as far as I Know He still has the Car He Also Built a 69 or 70 Convert with Porsche Phone Dial Wheels.  Don Still Hangs Out  With The Bergs and some of the old DKP members

I think that is a Refection from someones Jacket outside the car on the 1/4 Glass that is a DVB Jacket Patch Look at those Seats and Dash  Now that Is Old School Cal Look Mikes car was a fast Street Car He Ran Deanos on the street and had slicks mounted on a pair of Centerlines Did you notice the Right inside door Handle? The Car has a 66 Door on it No 67 Door Pull?   :o :o

yes that butternut car is a very nice brown, it was in a vw trends and it still belongs to don metz. i really like that car. that is the reason i have some 'flat' riviera's.

for now i hope to run them on my square or maybe switch things up from time to time on the square. if someone has more pictures of it please post them as i would love to see more of it.

and fabs: we have said that the yellow one with the porsche emblem looks 'different' but maybe someone has more pictures and stories about that one as well. to me it looks good.

and to follow the dkp car here's the kg/ks chop top  8) i had the upportunity to watch the engine this year at EBI  ;D thanks russell  ;)

the Don Metz car was a small side feature in Volksworld many years ago....maybe early 90's??

the main feature was about his pale grey 'vert that i thought had Fuch's?......both great cars.

kevin brennan blue oval was many time prized watch the trophy on the front & also a genuine brm , old jacket club  .the club won the trophy at bug in 31(the last one) for the "MOST REPRESENTED CLUB" 8) with 40vws

two other car's member , the convert with the AMR torq trust D was own by glen gaskey and glenn sold the ghia (beside) to purchase the convert, the 67 was owned by jeffrey hicken

Just a day ago my ideas for painted headlight bezels and chrome bumpers on a 69 was classified as "strange looking"... they obviously didnt have a clue...  ;D

LOL   JHU Painted headlight Rings were Common Back Then on the Later Bumpers we had the chrome stripped used Road Guard on the Bumper from the the center Strip Down Painted The Bumpers Body Color then eighter put the black tape or the rubber Strip in the Center They Looked Great   (Road Guard looks a little like undercoating but its what they use on the rocker Panels on Porsche;s and BMW's before the paint them plus it helps with Rock Chips)

 I think it looks good on a black or white car, but not so very much on other colours...

Painted headlight bezels are nice no doubt about that, I think the discusion is at painted AND crome bumpers. And I like it...

I go back and forth on painted headlight bezels. Can't decide if I like them or not. I guess it depends on the car.

This car is really cool, the color scheme going through the whole car, custom dash and detailing are all excellent! Fuchs are really the way to go on a '68-on car. Really yummie looking late model, I never saw these pics before and I'm impressed. Makes me want to do a late looker once again. Maybe I'll sell my '59 rag and ...

Steve Angelo Had That Green 65 Sedan he later had empi 5 Spokes on it Steve Was A Good Friend Of Frenchys he was also in DVB but Left And went to DSK, Steves Car Was A Very Fast Street Car his Best Time was 11:80 thew the Mufflers with Slicks (back in the early 80's) He Hung Out at Steve Tims Shop  and They were alway trying different things to make it go a little Faster his License Plate said IL RACE Which is something Steve loved doing.  The Motor That Was in The Car at the time this picture was Taken was A 1700 out of his Wifes car it was still in the 14:00's  not bad for the old ladies car  ;D ;D ;D He had Broke his Motor the Week before Bug In.  :( :( :(

the two Cars were in Volksworld LOL the Problem was Hector was the one taking the pictures  and sent them in so you can see who chose the pictures that were sent to Volksworld MAG. (HECTOR) LOL like the Volksworld Article Says I Sold Hector his BRM's they were one of Many Set's  I have Owned..

Did you Notice the Wheelie Bars on Terry Shepards Chop Top  they Drop Straight Down from the Body it keeps the front end down  but can unload the rear end,  Terry and Roger Crawford Are Good Friends  if I remember right Steve Sims that use to work at Berg use to Own The Chop Top when it was in DZK  and was all Steel then Terry Got It and Ran with DRF and turned it in to a Race Car One Piece Front End, Glass Deck Lid,Spindle Mount front wheels Ect.

Here Is Another DVB Car  it's my Old 69 Cal Look Car was Painted Savana Beige with Gold Pearl, Full Dechromed Body,Body Color Headlight Rings, One Piece Dash with VDO gauges,Hurst shifter,Formuling France steering wheel,Empi 8 Spokes,T Bar's with Lucas Lights, 1700 Motor with 42 Dcnf Berg Specials and 4 Tuned Qp Exhaust System.  THE GOOD OLD DAYS  when it did not cost an arm and leg to Build a nice Cal Look

Richie, go back one page and look at the 4 pics of Roger's car.  There are some with white outline letter'd tires and some without.  That tells me he had 2 sets of BRMs.

Sometime after Tar Babe got pie plate wheels, Roger acquired it's original BRMs, complete with red center caps.  Roger still owns them to this day.

I know which car bruce.the thing is Daves wheels had just had new firestone put on when he bought them so the tyres in the pics would be irrellevant. Also just out of interest 1 of Daves spare caps has red paint on the inside,he removed whatever was on the outside many years ago and they are just plain,cheers richie,uk

Hmmmm, interesting.  I think the red caps on Tar Babe's/Roger's wheels are anodized red.  Tar Babe features 2 different looks of red anodizing.  The interior panels got the marble look red/black anodizing that was applied using a very high tech process (maybe Deano will elaborate).  Then at a slightly later date, in plain red anodizing, the dash panel, rocker trim panels, and BRM center caps.  If you look at the pic above again, it almost appears that the caps still have the original silkscreened BRM lettering.

Nice Pictures Fabian some of those I have not seen before,  At Bug In they use to Do A Club Race They set up a Lane for the Club Cars I Ran My Zenith Blue  Stock 67 it had a 1641 Dual Port with Kadrons and A 110 Cam it was Running 15:20's all Day Long Well We entered it in the  Club Race And Guess who I got to Race?  LOL  The Turbo Insanty Car from the Calif Kafers I dailed in at 15:65 I got at least Half the Track head start I kept looking in my Mirror And Then I Saw The Bottom of Insanty as he Left the Line  with a Wheelie I was Pushin My Pedal To The Floor And Just Before the Lights He went by me like I was Backing Up LMAO It was A lot of Fun Back Then Everyone knew each other all friends and Gear Heads....  My Zenith Blue 67 is in The Back Ground

The Martinez late model car (black with blue accented fuchs) really made a lasting impression on me.  I saw it for the first time at a Bug-IN, no doubt in a club collection.  A beautiful car. ;)

That is what (DVB) means in German, We all Laughed it Off but they kept the Name even though the name has nothing to do with VW's

I remember reading in KS's California Look VWs book that it was a mis-translation of "The Peoples Superstructures"! Wasn't Jack Blenkinship, original owner/driver of Blue Obssession in DVB? I'm sure I spotted the bonnet badge on the car at EBI!

The Orange Car Belonged To A Girl (April Barker) I agree the BUS Taillight's got to Go!! but remember that was over 30 years ago, Geno Joined DVB when he Had the Yellow Super Beetle and Later Built the 69 Beetle (TRY MY 69?) Chuck Mc Chain Was A real Nice Guy Loved to Race his Oval, Looking at these Old Pictures Shows how the Cal Look has Changed over the Years, but as you can see by the early Club Pictures All the Car were built differently there was NO Blueprint saying this is the only way you can be In our club you have to Have This COOKIE CUTTER LOOK  it was Interesting to see the Different Ideas and Looks People came up with Some Looked good some looked Bad but in any Case it still had a Look all its Own.

Well it's still in the garage and not in the carport. Unfortunately finances have taken several major hits since I pulled the car out and we still haven't recovered. I'm still looking for those hard to find pieces and pick them up when finances allow.

Unfortunately for the VW, I'm losing the storage area I have another car stored in so I have to get that car drivable before I do anything with the VW.

Bill had the 70 when he joined DKK. I always liked that car. I painted my notch the same color 'cuz l like it so much.

When he bought the Squarbee, it was semi-done and painted red. Unfortunately it was vandalized. That prompted Bill to redo the car as you see here.

HOW DID IT WIND UP PINK? At the time, Bill's brother worked at a body shop in Garden Grove. We stripped it down and took it there to be painted. When Bill's brother asked him what color he wanted it, Bill said "I don't know, surprise me."

Some time later, when we went to pick it up, we were surprised! I remarked that it looked like Pepto-Bismal and gave it it's nickname.

A side story... Bill and I went to the LA County Fair. We ran across one of those carny booths where they try to guess things about you. This gal offered to guess what kind of car and what color it was. So Bill stepped up. She guessed a blue Camaro and Bill told her he had a pink Squareback. She looks over at me and I said "He REALLY drives a pink squareback."  :D

Gary started hanging out with us before he got into VWs. His brother Joey was a good friend of Tod Fuller and had a slammed Datsun(Nissan) 620 minitruck that was painted to match Tod's KG including matching Porsche Alloys. He would occasionally flat tow the KG to shows.

When he originally built it had a pretty stout turbo motor when turbo motors were still a black art.

There were 3 Dean brothers; John, Mark and Gary. They were all active in the club but none of them were active at the same time.

John was active before I joined and had the Super.

Mark was active when I joined and had a turquoise '67 that was the epitome of late '70s cal-look minimalism/ For me personally, this may be the most influential car in the way I look at Cal-Look. I would love to do another '67 with his design ideas. I don't think I've ever seen a picture of it anywhere.

Gary was the youngest anf had the red RHD Notch with polished 8 spokes.

Brent's car was called the Ambulance because he had modified the rear hatch to open to the side instead of being hinged at the top.

Mark was President when I joined DKK. His car was super clean. He built it while working at Rollings Automotive. After this he got into Trucks and had several full size Chevys.

Henry had several cars while in DKK. He always had a great sense of what looked "right." This KG and his blue '67 were my favorites.

Last I heard, he was still into VWs and living in the east.

This car too was an America's Most Beautiful VW winner. Later on, it was sold to someone else in the club. I can't remember his name though.

We actually won most represented club at the last 4 Bug-Ins. I have the trophy from the last one and it's one of my most prized posessions. I wound up with it because I was President at that time.

Glen was always a blast to hang out with. He was always up for some mischief!. He had a succession of nice cars. He worked at Dave Greiner's Auto Haus/Proformance.

Jeff Hicken was one of the first members. I believe that DKK first met in his parent's garage in La Habra Heights. He too is still into VWs. He's living in New Jersey and he has maintained the www.derklienerkampfwagens.com web site. Not much there yet.

The late model belonged to Dan Masur. He was another one from the Montebello area.

Any know where Jack & Bobbi are at? They were good folks.

Dave was quite a charcter. Famous for his Davisms; "We can't force ya to have fun." "She's got a Santana condition between the ears." and others.

His '67 was very nice but never pushed a lot of motor. He always had his car for sale at some exorbitant price. He figured if he could get that much for it, he could always build another one. I was never wild about the bumpers with overriders and without guards... always looked incomplete.

Last I heard, he was in Arizona managing a drag strip.

SDSK was a fun club. DKK did several events with them Jim Morgan grew up in my area (Tustin) and then started SDSK while going to school at SDSU. He had a clean blue '67 with Centerlines... pretty fast. We had one weekend cruise to Julian with them that was a weekend to remember.

Tod Fuller was in DVL before joining DKK

Max's car was a '53 on a '67 pan. Before this she owned a late model... maybe a 70 or so. The bodywork was done by a place in Santa Ana that specialized in Corvettes... hence the color choice.

Danny Sikich.... dang I'll have to see if I can find him. Last I talked to him was about 6 years ago. He was living in Santa Ana. He still had his car.

His car was way sweet! Later on it sported an even bigger motor 2300 built by club member Steve Wilkerson. Dan was an expert welder and he teamed up with Steve to make 2 sets of heads for their cars. Heavily modified they used Honda motorcycle spark plugs to maximize the vavle sizes and chamber designs.

This car along with my '67 and Greg Brinton's '67 are, to my knowledge, the only remaining DKK cars and oddly enough they're all '67s.

they may have been posted before, but here are some pics of 2 amazing cars and both are from DKK. the superbeetle named DUMPER and the very nice notch from Dean. they both are so nice and clean. and in a way a lot different from early callooks,but in my taste and opinion true callook cars because they live up to the callookspirit  but with a different flair. true 80's callook and a good measure of what can be done to supers and type3's.

This is just a VW Sport seat with the headrest cut off, but it looks cool. Probably sits pretty well too. Too bad you need those funky tripod seat mounts to make it work :(

The ghia was a 69, one of 2 cars (VWs) at the time painted Porsche Rasberry not pink. "Dumper" was the other one (Deans super beatle). Bill's brother painted it for me after it got sideswiped on the road (He told me to come look at the color he picked out and rasberry was what I got). Wheels were 2.0 L alloys motor was a 2000 cc + (I don't remember the exact size) 48 IDAs, Kawell heads, C.R. gearbox by Don Strong. I had the Britax ragtop installed (if I remember correctly, thats where Mason got the bright idea for his.) The interior was pretty neat. Aluminum door panels that were painted the same color as the outside, black carpet and Corbeau seats. The inside seemed huge with all the color and the sunroof. This car was pretty fast for its time, especially for a full interior ghia. I sold it and put the motor and trans into the red '60 convertable. At first it appeared with stock wheels, big motor C.R. gearbox, stock interior with a big ass monster tach up under the dash. Later I had the Americans and then later Porsche alloys. Both of these cars got me familiar with Orange Counties finest (I don't mean women) lawkeepers. The plates on the ghia and vert said YER NEXT. Ironically I traded the vert for another ghia. Rick, the first guy in the pic that you cant remember is Bob Davis.  I recruited him from my high school in Brea.  Great looking green 65 Rag top with polished centerlines.  After one of our car rallies we went behind the Nabisco building in Buena park and did our make shift drag strip late night fun.  On one of the many races that particular night Bob and I ran straight up.  I was pulling past him at 85 near the end at the railroad tracks and I look over at him to smile a winning smirk and and his car goes completely sideways!  Hes sliding sideways at 85+  Holy Sh*t!  He nips the railroad tracks embedded into the street and it whips him in a 360 and he winds up facing backwards.  Funny thing was,  the entire time he stayed in his own lane and never came close to me or anything else.  Boy were his eyes poking out of his head.... wow.

Another story from that night (if you dont mind)  Gary Berg was in his 12 sec blue street car with the first 5 speed anyone I knew had ever seen.  Gary is going to race this trailered Manx.  They are at the make shift starting line (again, behind Nabisco) and the Cops show up.  So Gene Berg sits in the passenger seat in Gary's car and basically waits for whats next.  Now, one of the cops was truly amazed at these presumably fast VW's.  Standing right next to the car the cop says to Gary with kind of a wink... "get this car outta here as fast as you can Mister"  Gene looks to Gary and nods, then Gary hits the gas, releases the line lock, the front end of the car shoots striaght up about 3 feet vertical, he spins the tires going into second gear, side swipes the clutch into third with some solid rubber noise, then into 4th and FINALLY, 5th gear!  He's looooong gone.... The Cop turns to us and says "FIVE?"  Yep, five gears man.  He's blown away and breathing hard, obviously not what he had expected.  He then threw his arms in the air and told everyione to "leave slowly!"  No arrests, no drama.  What a great night.

Steve was another long time member. Used to have a really Bad KG. He always had the fastest cars in the club. He's the one that came up with the idea of the single turbo muffler mounted under the car for more ground clearance and performance. I still have one of these muffler systems and plan on either running it or a similar system when/if I ever get my '67 back together.

If I remember, he bought the '58 pretty much done and just built a motor for it. The reverse lights for turn signals was just another idea for getting the lights off of the top of the fenders. Several cars ran them.

Sweet late model! This is how it should be done for a late model looker. IMHO  Yellow is an under used color on Cal-looks. I have always thought the yellow they use on Saturns would look good on a VW.

Hmmmmmmmmm me too dude  :) My friend Gav G77 had a late model Texas yellow 1300 for his first car and I have always had a soft spot for "piss yellow" Volkswagens  ;) :)

If my memory is not too faded, I think the yellow late model was Vaughn Rollings. Mark Ramirez and Kevin Brennan worked there and built their America's Most Beautiful VW winning cars there.

The Black Ghia I don't recognize and the other shot was part of a club display at Bug-In... I'm guessing around 80-81 or so.

That Yellow Late Model car was in DZK it was Vaughn Rollings Car  he Was Part Owner of Rollings Automotive in Fullerton a VW Repair Shop One of Our are DSK Members Bruce Frye (he Owned an Aqua 61 RagTop with Alloys) worked for Vaughn and his Brother back in the early 80's They still have there VW Dragster hangiing in from the roof in the Shop from when they raceed in the 80's 

I've got the Hot VWs with the feature on the dragster - mad Vanagon auto box with reduction boxes to make it work mid-mounted! :o

I am pretty sure the dragster went to Japan some time back. Rollings Automotive is still there, its a few blocks from my house, but Vaughn does'nt own it anymore, I called up asking for him a few years back & they said he had sold  the business.

I have a great picture of Mark's '67 - yes, an AWESOME car. The thing is... It covers a full spread in a French magazine from the very early '80s. The picture is too big to be scanned on my small scanner. I scanned the left page, then the right page (2 JPG pictures). I tried to merge them with Photoshop, but I don't know the program well enough to do it!

Could somebody help? I'd be glad to email both JPG pictures.

What's up all?! That is definately Vaughn's car. I remember how giddy he was when he put on the bumper w/turn sigmals. He always hung out with DKK but was loyal enough to DZK to not change out the stickers. His nickname was(is still?) hack; fixed everything with his brass hammer! :o
Too cool to see all of these old photos & see the names of people I used to hang out with. I'll steer Mark Ramirez to this site, he'll get as much of a kick out of it as I have! :)

Kevin Lemons.... wow.  Hey first about Vaughn's car.  I too remember how excited he was putting on those front bumpers.  I was going on vacation to Mazatlan in 1980 (when the pic was taken) and it came up that he wanted to go to Mex and get "those Mexican signal lights".  Well stupid me offered to bring em' back for him so once there I took a taxi to the local Mex VW dealer (what a trek that was) and brought the turn lights back in my luggage.  Far as I remember this might have been the first late model or one of the very first CLEAN late model cars with this set up.  He was excited.  ha

Kevin, I had not owned aircooled for 25 years, now I'm building a 66 for my 16 year old.  Its too damn much fun to just give him the car.  I might just have to commandeer it after awhile.  Good to hear that you are alive and well.  Plus you wont believe how expensive the "old" stuff is.  All that stuff I used to buy from Dee Berg.  Shoot I bought an Empi Speedwell walnut GT steering wheel from her for $35 (which was alot then for a wheel).  Heck hardly anyone wanted one really.  It was all Grant and Formuing france then.  I also paid $150 for a set of 4 original two piece 5 spokes from her as well (new in the boxes).  She was nice to me.  I used to work at the plant nursery right next door to their old Gene Berg shop in Orange off Batavia.  You could say I spent a few lunch hours there... ha

Cars and Coffee is a car cruise at the Ford Premier Bldg. off the 5 and Alton. It's held every Saturday from about 6:00 to about 9:00 am. They have a little of everything out there. A few Hot Rods, lots of exotics and muscle cars. We were trying to get a group together to go last weekend but it didn't work out.

Scott! WTF is up! Vaughn was a crack-up! This Cars & Coffee is something to see;. Lambos, Ferraris, Ford GTs, hot rods, muscle cars, F1 race cars, you name it. I went to 1 last year when I was down for for the Ford show. I guess I don't see the VW thing as being expensive after having modified a domestic V8; 2 X the cylinders & valves, a little bigger crank, a little longer camshaft, brakes tend to be a little bigger, lots more exhaust pipe. Scary to think we 1st met & were not much older than your son! That's cool you  helping him with his own bug. My middle stepson is into liquid cooled, has a 2001 1.8T GTI, slammed with 19" wheels.

Okay Here is a pic of Vaughn's dragster called "Imagination".  It was the cover car for the December 1978 HotVW magazine.  This was a very innovative and interesting rail.  It had a beautiful paint scheme, and was a cool looking dragster.  It ran a Type 3 Automatic tranny(theres your innovation folks).  I remember it was tricky but as you can see from his dial in time it ran pretty good.  Gawd, remember he had that awful beard, those giant red mutton chops.  Whoa!  Too much.  Enjoy

I think the ghia was worth it. Besides the fact that our local "club" friendly(ha ha) CHP officer, Harvey Heaton, recommended KG's due to the headlights appearance of sitting higher. He always advised that he was less likely to cite a lowered KG vs. a sedan. I'll have to see about getting some photos of the KG scanned. Here is one I found of the engine:

I don't remember whose car is directly behind the Ghia... it is definitely NOT McNew's as I had only known that car to have 2.0 litres on it. The car behind that is Marks orange '66. Mark may have been the first "resto-Cal" car as he loved accessories.

Across from the Ghia is Kevin Brennan's '57. Another Bug-In Best of Show winner.

This thing had a bad ass 2180 SPG rollercrank motor that lived!!! Fumio Heads, Bob Geise 4:86/88? RP trans and did 12.98 at carlsbad, even had Brinton and Schwimmer as witnesses. Wow... I used to keep one of those shirts in the trunk of my '67 when I would show it.

We could run it but it was a really.. REALLY long rallye. I wanna say it was in the neighborhood of 60 miles?? DKK guys? You Remember? Started in Whittier, ran up through Hacienda Heights. La Habra, Fullerton, Brea, Anaheim, Orange and ended in Tustin.

I don't know if I have any of that stuff anymore.

I remember that rally!  I was the guy waiting at the bar for everyone to finish and join me.  I think after the party that night is when Gary Berg did a wheel stand in front of the Cop behind Nabisco.  WITH Gene in the passenger seat!  There must have been 200-300 cars it seemed like 1000 as I recall.  Boy oh boy I think we knew how to throw a party.  People yelling Who-yaaah in large groups at each other.  The "who-yaaaaah" yell that was SO stupid and so popular from radio station KMET.  'member?  And then Dyno yelling "SPERM!!!!!!"

Found these on The Samba posted from Low Oval (?).  Whose yellow car with DKK stickers?  Any idea?  And heres Gemco on Harbor and Lambert(La Habra not Whittier), I think this one is where we staged for one of the DKK rallies.  Looks like Alex Rodriquez leaning in the window.  Probably collecting money!  ha.
That Gemco is where I bought my first 45 rpm records.  Ballroom Blitz by Sweet, Fame by Bowie, and Jungle Boogie by Kool and the Gang...Hah!

Might be Gary Dean's. I think the color is closer to Gary's plus I know he had chrome headlight rings and I think that Jimmy's were painted.

First things first...  It was absolutely GREAT seeing you guys last night.  All you guys are totally fun and I look forward to seeing you more often.  Once every 25 years just is'nt enough... ha.  Oh, and Bill Schwimmer.... as Bill Murray said in Stripes..."you are a Mad Man".  That car of yours is insane and my son would not stop drooling at it.  You have consistently built some of the BEST Cal Look cars year after year and top quality stuff too.  It truly is amazing.

Now, I did not really look at that photo of the yellow car until I read your post just now.  That person sitting/leaning on the light post my friends is no other than Steve Dale.  One of the Dale brothers from Fullerton.  That hair... and stance, its him for sure.

Oh..... and WTF? I take off and THEN its photo time of the "gang"?  Wait till I left did yah?  Did'nt want my bald head ruining the flash?  Hah.

The yellow car was Vince's, remember it was called LoBuks, hence the chromies. Also the truck behind it is Willie's as well as the sepia car in the last post.

Willie had alot of cars, when we first met he had and orange KG with "Sight for Sore Eye's" painted in the back window, he also had red '57 that he rolled on teh way back from the Speedway races one night. Mark Ramirez and I were driving behind him and saw the whole thing in Mark's black '67. It was pretty sureal. Willie also had that sepia car as well as the yellow bus. I'm thinkin that the sepia car came from another member but I can't remember who.

Hold your horses there!  I am proud to see continued interest in the original DKP from the mid-sixties.  Great to see guys like Jim Edmiston still carrying the flag for us old timers.  I am certain that all who have read your post appreciate your comment but, I for one, am most interested in seeing a steady stream of SKP memories.

My convert had 14x5 1/2 alloys all around the 62 ran15x5 1/2 in front and early 6's in the rear

same car same 67 CONV plate but two differnt owners I sold it over 20 years ago and it's still running the streets of So. Calif it was repainted yukon yellow, with a brown canvas top and red interior, and the guy lived in san diego, then it sold to a guy in huntington beach he changed the interior to black and put a black top and a big motor in it and slammed the rear, To Low For Me

i found another old car from old club one of the dsk an 53 topchop owned by gran greven

I dig oval chops when the rear vents are deleted. That's the only way to do it, IMO

I'm guessing the tank is relocated for weight distribution ?

the tank was behind the rear bucket it was an bus tank that why the fuel trap was on the side of the car

Grant Made That Center Mount Fan Housing he also used a 12 Volt Porsche Genarator that used the 6volt fan tin He Fabed  the Stand from a stock 6 volt with a lot of cutting and Welding this was Before Fueling and CB ever came out with a center mount fan housing the Fuel Tank custom Fabed and was relocated behind the rear seat. This car befor it was Red it was light Blue with Riviera Wheels Rear Deck lid was also Fabbed Grant used two of the Hood Vents from a 68 and newer Type 1 it looks close to an early vert lid but the vent are a little differnt.

Pretty much, yes. The Flat Four Inch Pincher replica gasser is done the same way.

Usually when people chop an oval, they lean the whole rear window/ vent area forward (so the decklid won't line up with the body anymore), or they take the metal out from above the window (leaving the roof very flat looking). When the vents are cut out and the rear window is moved down, the natural Beetle curves stay intact. It also puts the rear window at the same level as the side windows, which I think looks great :)

Grant and his Older Brother P.J. both worked for there Dad's VW Shop In San Dimas Ca. WagonMaster If you recall they Ran an Oval Window Choptop, Raced it at alot in the Early Bug In Days At OCIR and were good Friends with the Bergs. Car was Blue First and later painted White.

That magenta car was inspiration for me when I was building my first Cal-Look car back in the mid 80's.  So, where did these cars go?  They were sooo clean, surely they didnt end up doing daily duty and getting destroyed?

KROQ? Bollocks! They were always mainstream! I had a buddy that was a DJ there, Roland West, caved in for the big bucks [sic], before that he was at KNAC which was a genuine  "alternative radio" station. I could tell you stories about the fun Roland and I used to have on air. We still keep in touch, he was my best man when I got married over in Italy, and last year when he got married [again] and I came out to Frisco for that. He's no longer an "on-air" guy, he's now the west coast promotional rep for Island Def Jam. Still a rocker though.

Back to topic... No Mark, I didn't give you that card. Because my car was far from club worthiness, I was more of a attender than a member. I was at most of the meetings (beer consumption) and functions. I lived vicariously through my brother in law, helping him build his ghia, and then later a pretty fun baja that we beat the hell out of for years!

We had 2 chops in our club but I think Mike's car was finest chop I've ever seen.

Shubee, if I remember 13.99 was a cut off for a class.(14.00- was next class faster. Mike was trying his new motor.Ask dyno don, car was in the 12"s with lonnie reed's help. Not pump gas ..duh. car was heavy..look how straight the paint was...amazing. bill

make that a 14.00-  it was a SLOWER class. Dyno don did tell me he "beat on it" a few times.Said it was a very fast car. Don't let him drive your car...ever.. bill   HA!

Mark, it looks like Wilkerson holding the handle of the wheelbarrow, and it's definately one of the Dale brothers.  There was Steve Dale and Greg Dale.  From what I remember the two of them started a little car rental biz called Ugly Duckling Rent a car.  Remember that?  They just flat out killed it for awhile.  Both brothers had fantastic cars too.  Fabs, I am CERTAIN you must have put yourself in a wheelbarrow at least ONE time.  I miss your tongue pics.  There should be an entire thread of Fabs and his tongue.

And the blue car is certainly Kevin Brennans.  Mine was not THAT nice.  That car won Best of Show at I think Bug In 27?  Correct?  Kevin had the 48IDA's and I ran the Solex 40P11's with the velocity stacks.  Not as cool.

Thanks guys for the effort there.  Oh well.  Im old, I have the classic disease CRS.  You know, Cant Remember Shit.  Brennans car was VERY nice.  I do remember driving an hour to pick up some wierd Russel fittings for him.  It was the day before the Bug In that he was to debut that car.  My throttle cable broke on the 405 freeway on the way to to get the parts.  I drove the entire distance back and forth with the cable out.  I was pretty craftty back then.  And skinny. ha

Any of you remember being over at Vaughn's a couple days before Bug-in 23 when Mark was putting the finishing touches on his black car. We were all sitting around shooting the shit [probably drinkin a few beers] when Mark forgot about the wrench on his pulley after just adjusting his valves. He fired the car up and launched the wrench >through< his freshly painted decklid. That was something else. It was a major scramble to get it fixed and repainted practically overnight. Man, those were the days.

I'm not really the one for too many stories from those days as like I say I was only aorund for a short time. But I was hired at Auto Haus by John Lazenby initially (he was out of VW and into BMW's by then) and just recently had some contact with him, after 35 years. He is heavy into Chylser 300's from the 1950's. I also worked with Eddie "Antlers" Craig and Mike Ahlstrom who was also in DKP and later worked for Small Car. I do remember when personalized plates became the rage and Doug got FASRNU, he really wanted QUIKRNU (I think that was the spelling) but another friend of mine got it (not for a Bug) and Doug was pissed off. I hired Jeff Kymla to work for us and of course he went on the start KYMCO a few years later. Most of the rest of it is just a blurr that I hadn't really thought about for years.

John Leslie (friend of Demoss) bought Harveys car. He wrecked it then transfered all the parts onto another shell and painted it white. It had a 1835 cc / 48 IDAS and a Mohler gearbox. The burgandy / red shell was placed on top of our high school (El Modena) next to a porta potty and spray painted with the words PIT STOP. John  sold the car to Jim Kitasaki from Orange and I had the wheels on my 60' convert for a while. Jim parted the car out and Bill S. and I have never found out where the wheels went. They were in a tire shop in Orange called ironically V and W tire.

Yes those were all mine. the ghia was before the notchback.The green bug  was stolen from the guy I sold it to, and ended up at A chop shop. The others dont know where they went.

This thread has brought out alot of newbies! Here's my contribution. Here's some photos of DSK club members headed to a Bug-In, Shubee say's 17 or 18, he's not sure either. Black car is Len Hedges with wife Debbie, Shubee's Ghia next to Ron Hussy's '64, Shubee, Ron, and Larry standing with Bob Carmona and his Oval, and interior shot is my '61 in the car show.

Wow.....Mark was a good guy. I believe while he was getting married, some DRA member thought it would be funny to pull the pushrods out of his motor...........it wasn't.

Milo Milkof (spelling) was a favorite DRA member of mine. He was very laid back and although he wouldn't race it, when he punched that 2180, it just launched.
His younger brother worked for me for a while at my shop (Buehler and Lawrence Enterprises). He was our clean-up guy but he was too good as you would put down a wrench and then go back to pick it up and he would have cleaned it and put it back in the tool box. Drove my partner crazy and I had to let him go........for doing a great job!!

I remember hearing that story about the push rods from my Dad (Mark) when I was a kid. I found a few pics of his oval I will try to scan and post them.

The 64 with the 5 Spokes is Beige with Brown 5 Spokes also did you Notice that Bob Carmonas Oval Had Chromies on it?  thats a very Early picture of his car it later got the 5 spokes that are on the 64

Not much yellow cars from back in the day. I've seen maybe 3 or so.
What was the color of 'the dumper'? I've seen it on pictures only and on each pic there color looks different. Once is more red, on another is closer to dark pink...

I've got quite a lot of pictures of dumper stashen on my PC and on each the colour looks different :)
There's a pic of an pinkish 1303 on polished fuchs in KS's 'Performance Hanbook' in the chapter on the lowering&wheels. Is it the dumper also?

This was my car after about 2 years work, remember I only 19 at the time! We were all young and didn't know any better. There were many cars that ran with primer as works in progress, 80% of what showed up at Bug-Ins were "unfinished", check out some pics of Geno Combs SB on this thread. If your car wasn't done, most guys said "I'll have it done by next Bug-In", which was only 6 months away! Let's see if I can attach this pic after the car was painted and I was in DSK.

That 64 beige with brown five spokes was my favorite car !!!
More details on the beige car. As I recall the trans was picked up as
a parts/ rebuild... it had a super-diff & close ratio gears -- worked real nice
with the 1641 kadron motor.I had previously planned on 356 brakes & Len

Those are my early pic's of you and your car on the way to a Bug-In. Sorry for the poor quality, I probably took them with my Kodak 126! I remember I rode shotgun with Shubee that year because my car was in for paint. Do you recall which Bug-In it was? It must have been Fall '76 or Spring '77. Neither me nor Shubee are sure.

I can't even remember what happened to that car!!!  I must have traded

If it was the spring Bug In, that was on "Uncle Adophs" 91st B-Day. That was the BI that we all piled the BRM's into Larry's old '67 convertible and had it in the car show for "Worst Of Show". No trophy. :'(

But we still talk about how when we had "For Sale 21 BRM's- $5,000" written on the front hood, and Ron Barrett came up and asked us who to make the check out to?, we did some price adjusting. I think Speedwell has a photo of that car loaded with wheels.

If you'd been like me, you would not be wondering where your '64 went to. I still have all my cars from the 1970's. :o

At first we had $5,000 for the wheels, but when we got asked "Who get's the check?" we took out our marker and added the one before the $5,000, thus the shown $15,000 price.
I think we decided to throw in the car too for that added price.

Fantastic Fabs --- many thanks for putting those up..... I guess it was in 1981 late October,
it was a multi - club gathering I recall Keep on Buggin, Der California Kafers, DVB, etc all there.
I think we played softball & just hung out. Within weeks or just days following  -- sadly my car
was stolen !! it was found days later w/o much left. I rebuilt the car and installed those 5 spokes
with a stock 1600 sp. It was my daily driver for 5- 6 years following. Those American 5 spokes
were purchased at a swap meet @ Los Alamitos (really bad shape)  I had them polished & painted them.
I liked they were different than Empi fives -- I really liked the 2-spoke knock-offs. The wheels were cast
with threads -- left hand & opposite right. I later sold them to SHUBEE .  Note the picture of
the Shubee car 67 CONV with BRM's -- most pics show it with alloys.  I don't think I have any pics
of my black car with the 5 spokes installed -- but believe me I ran them for years.  Maybe SHUBEE
can provide some pics - hey what about it, Shubee?? Maybe Walker has some??
Oh, I forgot to mention my alloys were 14 x 5 1/2" with 185's

Holey Crap!  I'd swear this was the car!I remember the plates of this car.  I think it was the one from my story above.  Either that, or it was another night on "Cruisin' Main".  Did it ever have a big motor in it?

I had put the 7's on the front of the 70 Ghia to see what it would take to have them clear,
too much work at that time
I ended up putting 14 x 5 1/2" on the front with 175-70 x 14" michellins on it
the 7's on the rear had 215-60 x 15's

no DKP stickers on the car  ???, the club didn't existany more at that time ??

neil, my comment was made out of fun, as I just don't remember why no decals in car. Ron is a great guy and I am sure it there was no issues on my part about "decals or not" as he was a club member.  Ron's sedan was fast, as he and mike o'neal where always at it as who's was faster. The color and wheel choice is classic 70's look.bill

That picture was done the same day I bought the ghia, I put decals on the following day
then the day after that the 2084 cc motor from my 68 went into it.

I'm not normally a fan of big bumper anythings, but in this case I'll make an exception.  Very cool rides from "back in the day", when I thought girls were more fun than cars.  Wow, was I dumb.

It was an eighties thing, but a lot of DKK cars were that way.

Funny.  You would have had to seen them in the flesh.  The black car was the sweetest late model anyone had ever seen.  The paint was epic.  These pictures dont do it justis.  I cant even remember him having a brown car.

the aronson/holmes 63 for sale at bug in in the mid/late 70's
 note that the beckers ,brad's and dkp stickers on the front quater windows were removed , but if you look closely the one on the rear windows was still there

Mid to late 70's we had a customer at H&H that had a red KG Vert with polished / body paint color detailed Alloys.

In 1979 I was working with Tod at a stereo shop. One of my duties was driving brand new cars to/from dealers to the shop for top-end stereo installations. One of my trips involved a brand new 930. White with white detailed alloys. Beautiful car. I'm not going to mention my speed on San Vicente Drive!  :D

I remember most of the cars were equipped with black alloys and the dealers polishing, chroming or painting them to match body color.

We managed to fit 7's on the rear of an IRS KG by splitting the lower fender and welding in a pie shaped filler plate so the rear arch did not tuck in... early dav-fab stuff y'know :D :D

Just to set the record straight. The car in the photo was Ernie Baron's.

Ernie now has a green KG 'vert that won it's class at The Classic last weekend.

Mark's black '70 was a heck of a car. Who would have thought that blue background Alloys on a black car would look so good.  ;)

As the taker of this spectacular photo, I have to apologize.  Unfortunately seeing some photo after 30 years, 4 kids, a wife, numerous dogs, cats, houses, cars etc.  my memory has failed me.  I don't know why I thought that car would have been Mark's before it was black, Mark bought a basket case old 70 and did it up (that I remember).  As it is, I am lucky enough to remember some of the players from back then.
