Title: Drilling for 6
Post by: spoolin70 on September 09, 2014, 07:37:45 am
Good morning machinists

So it's got to the point where I have to think about drilling the extra holes in my case to make it 6 studs per cylinder.

Now I could break out the ol' black & decker and go at it like I'm fracking but it would probably end up like one of those grapefruit and cheese hedgehogs from a 1970's party (I'm too young to remember them but I've seen images with fondue sets).

I do have access to a large mill so that's the securing and drilling straight part taken care of but the question is where exactly to drill ?
Do you guys use a jig or a template ? I do have 6 stud heads so could they be used as a guide ?

I have a buddy with a lathe so would it be possible to secure the head down without the cylinders in place and with a accurate fitting piece, use the extra holes in the head as a guide and mark through onto the case ?

Thanks for any suggestions
Darren

6 studs? You'll just have to mock it up as you say, personally at less than about 450 turbo hp I wouldn't bother, Wassers can handle 800hp with no extra fixings as it ain't possible with those, the T4 case tho is an odd shape,  and there's no material spare away from the liner seat, heavy welding will be needed to anchor even a 5th stud.

Thanks spanners, I hear what your saying.

Multiple measuring will be the order of the day then. I have 6 stud heads and barrels so at least I have something to work from.

Still going to be a tense moment when that first drill bit makes contact  :o

Thanks
