Title: Welded fans or not
Post by: freakpower on October 09, 2014, 15:54:35 pm
Does any of you have any expierince with how much rpm a standard VW fan can survive.
Many people insist on using a welded fan.
I got hold of onf these fans. It was supposedly corrected and balanced after the welding. The fan was too crooked so i did not dare to put it on my car.

Throw that fan in the garbage and buy one from Berg or Bugpack.  The answer for me is if your questioning if you need one or not then you do.   I've seen what happens when a fan comes apart and it's destructive, expensive and dangerous.  Stock motor = stock fan,  modified motor = welded fan.  That's my opinion.

I have used a new VW fan on my car for some years. Mostly I take the belt off when racing but it has seen up to 8500rpm several times. I check it after every season and it still seems fine visually.
A welded(and rebalanced of course) fan sounds like a very good idea, though.

I agree with the Taylor, and whilst a stock fan can no doubt take a fare few revs, you have to question why risk it if you don't need to. I have just recently got a berg fan myself as I was in a similar situation questioning the need for one, but it's really nice piece of kit and whether or not I will ever need that extra safety I'll never know but piece of mind and all that :)

The explode from being over accelerated, not high rpm.

Miss a shift and it can explode.

i had a gen vw one on my race engine for years it never went bang and saw many passes some to 8k  but when closely inspected it was ovaled so id say they are worth getting a decent welded and balanced one

I fitted a brand new EMPI welded fan to my 8000rpm circuit racer and it lasted 60 racing miles before exploding...I've now switched to a 911 fan conversion.
