Title: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: stretch on November 04, 2014, 22:25:51 pm Will a Porsche 356 top pulley fit on a VW (Bosch) alternator?
Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: stealth67vw on November 04, 2014, 23:07:17 pm Yes. You need all 3 pieces, both halves and the hub.

Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: stretch on November 05, 2014, 14:19:00 pm Yes. You need all 3 pieces, both halves and the hub. Thanks for the info. :) Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: Donny B. on November 05, 2014, 14:52:08 pm You can try Stoddard, but they are pricey...

You should see no more then two threads protruding through the nut when everything is tightened up. Use the Porsche nut, too. I added up the cost... about $95. An OEM 043 903 109 pulley was past $50 when I was selling VW parts at the dealer four years ago. :o Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: Zach Gomulka on November 05, 2014, 15:38:16 pm I've seen a few of the repro ones spin the inner half on the hub, I would weld it to the hub like a VW pulley.
Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: Jos on November 05, 2014, 17:20:06 pm Is there an advantage to the 356 pulley or appearance?
Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: Zach Gomulka on November 05, 2014, 18:19:25 pm Is there an advantage to the 356 pulley or appearance? Smaller diameter, spins the fan faster. Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: stretch on November 05, 2014, 18:35:41 pm I was going to go to Sierra Madre in Pasadena.
Do Stoddards have a retail location or is it online ordering only? Again, thanks for all the info guys. :) Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: Jos on November 05, 2014, 18:48:05 pm Very cool.(pun intended) is it then possible to run a power pulley and 356 pulley and retain normal fan speeds?
Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: stretch on November 05, 2014, 19:19:17 pm Very cool.(pun intended) is it then possible to run a power pulley and 356 pulley and retain normal fan speeds? Yes. :) Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: Donny B. on November 05, 2014, 20:47:17 pm Stoddard is in Highland Heights, Ohio.
Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: andy198712 on November 06, 2014, 18:36:42 pm The thing I never got was people running a power pulley to gain power by not spinning the fan as fast, then speedin it back up?
I looked at one a while ago as my trigger wheel was made from a power pulley an try are pricey for a top pulley. eBay USA popped some up now and again Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: stealth67vw on November 07, 2014, 01:09:50 am I use the 356 pulley during the hot summer months (it gets 110F+ 43C here in Oregon) and install the full size top pulley when it cools off in the fall. It is a lot easier swapping top pulleys rather than bottom pulleys.
Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: Brew 66 on November 08, 2014, 15:31:41 pm Will they fit on an alternator or just generator? I'm thinking I could use some extra fan speed in the summer in Phoenix!
Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: stealth67vw on November 08, 2014, 20:07:50 pm Yes. I ran the pulley on my Bosch alternator.
Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: andy198712 on November 08, 2014, 21:30:27 pm I'd be grateful for 20 degree heat this summer in the UK lol
Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: Jos on November 08, 2014, 22:28:41 pm Andy can you post a pic of this trigger wheel? As well as one of the whole motor? I'd like to see te 356 pulley on it.
Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: andy198712 on November 09, 2014, 22:41:20 pm Andy can you post a pic of this trigger wheel? As well as one of the whole motor? I'd like to see te 356 pulley on it. I didn't put one on in the end and it's been fine but its only a 1200, running the ignition off megasquirt... Will find you a pic :) Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: andy198712 on November 09, 2014, 22:48:06 pm (http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e222/andy198712/IMG00508-20110914-2048-1.jpg) (http://s40.photobucket.com/user/andy198712/media/IMG00508-20110914-2048-1.jpg.html)

We sell OEM Porsche pulley halves, hub, 36mm nut and correct Porsche shims. See link in my sig below. Jim Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: RichardinNZ on December 11, 2014, 21:24:06 pm Does anyone know whether the 356 Top Pulley is smaller than a 36hp top pulley? If yes, am I correct in thinking that I could use a standard size lower pulley (which is smaller than a 36hp lower pulley) with this and still turn my fan at about the same speed? My reason is that I can't find a 36hp size degree pulley and think this could be a way of achieving it without lowering fan speed.
Thanks Richard Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: Lee.C on December 15, 2014, 22:39:21 pm Useful & interesting thread....
Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: stretch on December 16, 2014, 10:59:08 am That engine looks great Jim. :)
Could you give me the spec on the fan belt please? Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: Jim Ratto on December 16, 2014, 18:20:23 pm That engine looks great Jim. :) Could you give me the spec on the fan belt please? Thanks- that's an old picture, taken in 2000 or 2001. That was a wretched motor to drive. I hated it, but thanks again. The belt is a 10x825 made by Continental. I think it took me a few tries to nail down best fit. May not work in everybody's case- so don't go off my word. Have fun, Jim Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: stretch on December 16, 2014, 21:08:18 pm Thanks Jim, much appreciated. :) Gives me a good starting point.
What was the spec of that motor? Why did you hate it? Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: nlvtinman on December 19, 2014, 00:51:55 am As a related question to this topic, I have a stock size Berg Achiever bottom pulley with a 356 generator pulley. A 9.5X905 belt is too large. Anyone know what size belt works with such a set up?
Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: Zach Gomulka on December 19, 2014, 01:15:18 am There are different diameter Berg pullys... I just go to the parts store and they'll let me swap belts til I find the one that lets me put all 10 shims in.
Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: danny gabbard on December 19, 2014, 01:59:46 am Just a idea, Rap some kind of tape around pulley combo in question , cut it and lay it out and measure. Get ya in the ball park . Or a old belt , to short ? cut it and measure how short it is.
Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: nlvtinman on December 19, 2014, 03:41:10 am Zach and Danny, Thanks for those good hints. The likelihood that someone else has the same combo and knows was a shot in the dark worth the asking.
Time to make some measurements on my own.. Steve Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: Jim Ratto on December 19, 2014, 03:58:08 am Thanks Jim, much appreciated. :) Gives me a good starting point. What was the spec of that motor? Why did you hate it? It was 2332 with 11:1 and Clay Smith steel cam, 280 deg @ .050 and over .600" at valve. It was fun when it had room to be let off its leash, which was rare at this time in my life. Had I spent more time tuning it and accepted the fact I wanted one kind of motor, but built the opposite, I wouldn't have been so mad. The cam and lifters ended up in a red hot DKP 2276 with 13.25:1, 48's monster heads and it went like hell. Title: Re: Porsche 356 top pulley Post by: stretch on December 19, 2014, 10:47:59 am That sounds very familiar. I've currently got a 2332 with a Clay Smith CS76 cam in my car. I love it, but, i'm always torn between making it more 'street' when i'm cruising around in it & then making it more 'race' when i'm at the track.......
