Title: Original BRM weld / repair in the UK?
Post by: jick on November 29, 2014, 15:17:51 pm
So I'm copying Brian Silva's thread, but I need someone in the UK who's capable of welding up a reasonably small 3"
Crack in one of my BRM's.... If it wasn't for the crack this wheel looks virtually NOS close up, no kerb rash, never been polished or refinished in any way ... All the edges are so crisp..... Not like my other one.... It's been polished to death and has lost so much definition.

There are a few places that specialise in vintage/race wheel repair including the Magnesium stuff,
But I was just wondering if anyone has any direct experience? A personal recommendation is always good!

A few years back my buddy bought Jim Lowe's old grey BRM wheels (the white oval on the cover of the cal look bible)... Jim said that he had them repaired, and they would crack again. This went on for a while until he just said f*** it, I'm not worrying about it :) I think some old wheels came out of the cast more porous than others and are more prone to crack, no matter what you do, you're just chasing your tail.

yeah....I know what you mean dude, but mine aren't gonna see too much even gentle street use, I'll just throw them on for a few show-off credits occasionally.... :D

that said, I'm sure there are loads that have been welded and live trouble free lives.....

Have not dealt with them myself but i read some good things about them on a motorbike forum i'm on.
Some guys there on the forum had wheels repaired by them and some other magnesium stuff.

A personal recommendation is always good!

My recommendation would be to sell them.
Here is what a mag wheel looks like when it fails.
You crash, not worth it for a cracked mag rim imho.

Dude..... That's great info... Thanks!

I'm near Redditch, so not far from Herefordshire, and my mums in Monmouth, so I'm over in that area fairly often,
I'll definitely check them out.... Good to have somewhere I can actually pop into.

Spoke to Jon Abbott earlier today..... Unfortunately the old boy that used to do them for him has recently retired.

Thanks again!

No worries Jick, glad to help. :)

Bob's (guy at Concept) work is awesome, you will not believe the standard of his welding. I'm sure you'll know one of the cars he built, a full tube frame splitscreen single cab with a 911 porsche motor in the back. Anyway all there contact details is on their website. (http://www.conceptracing.co.uk/)

The only thing i will say is make an appointment with them to go down rather than just turning up as they are super busy.

I think it also depends on where the crack is, if it is in a spoke where the magnesium is like bubbled b( i am not sure if this is explained how I meant it to be), it would be hard to cover up the weld. I think welding is only non-noticable for where the mag is equal?
