Title: Old cal-lookers that strayed into kustom territory?
Post by: jick on December 10, 2014, 10:05:20 am
So, as has been written many times, Dave Kanase's car was very much a cal- looker,
But certainly had a more kustom/ Hotrod feel to it...

Also, there's Jeff Kawaguchi's  Kandy red car with the fenders leaded in...
I don't have any photos of that car but I'd sure love to see some nice colour photos of it??

Were there any others around back in the day that pushed the boundaries of what we now regard as traditional Cal-look?

Photos always help!

Cool thread.....

In my eyes a Cal Looker is just a Hot-rodded VW if you get what I mean  :-\ :)

I LOVE Dave's Car!!!!!

I just noticed that car has a 65-66 decklid on it (it's a 64). I like that. Everyone (including me ::)) is overly concerned with having the correct year stuff these days. Back then they just used what they liked, or just what was on hand/easy to find. Like 62+ tail lights on an oval, so what? ;)

Exactly!

That's why it bothers me so much that these days no-one seems to be looking at ANY other niches of the classic/vintage/Hotrod/kustom world..... Why the fuck not? That's what these dudes were doing back in the day... All this stuff about how "Mr VW X?"  Invented T-bars,
"Mr VW Y?" Was the first to de chrome/nose/deck etc...... Sorry but I think it's absolute bollocks.
These things were commonplace normal modifications that hot rodders etc had been doing for YEARS before.

I'm not criticising anyone.... Just trying to make a point.... :D

THANKYOU BUDDY....... I have been saying this stuff for YEARS!!!

Thats kinda why I like the "Splits" that used to be around "Back in the day" they were closer to "Hot-Rods" in my opinion... :)

I've always said build it your way!
Around 1975, I built my second Oval with '67 USA spec front fenders, SB12 trim rings and Lucas lights along with'67 tail lights, '67 Vert decklid & matching rear apron.
I thought it was cool  8)

the Japanese  (massive generalisation!) really take shit to another level....both good and bad!

(have a look on youtube for "Bosozoku Cars" for some hugely enjoyable/worrying off topic viewing!)

I remember discussing the Harfees guys in Japan a few years ago on here.......they have some cool and different ideas....but still not quite what I'm talking about.....

Sorry about the crap photo.....but I reckon this is a great example...
Fantastic paint, chopped, colour-coded, amazing vintage/period interior rather than some shitty 80's velour or whatever...
Porsche nipple hubcaps...... It's all there!  Like the "Cal-Look Rulebook" tells us.... Haha.
Could maybe stand to lose the spotlights, but otherwise....?

I remember that car well too, nice ride.

Another Squareback, probably my all-time favourite, was the "Sewfine" Square panel from the mid-80s I think? I kept looking at my Square, then the Sewfine pic, then my square, etc......
 ;)

I remember the Sewfine car.....(I think)., it was in an early Volksworld..
Beige/tan/brown stripes....? Is that right?
