Does anyone have any other details on the Mike Smith '67, other than the Hot VW feature, It ran a nitrous 1776.

Agreed. The Hot VW's issue with that car doing a burnout on the cover has always been one of my favorites.

Hi Don, any information on his nitrous setup how much did he run to get that performance, was it multi stage, etc. In fact anything that Hot VW cover is a classic, yet I only ever saw it in that magazine with very little write up. Does it even still exist!

I saw the car at Sears Point at the last Goodguys VW show there in 1994 and it was running high 11s. Not much I would have changed on that car. Last I heard it went to Japan.

A close to full weight 67 will need approx 230hp to do high 11`s. A well built 1776 should produce 170hp and then add 60-75hp nitrous on top.

there was an article in one of the recent hotvws where they showed a warehouse in Japan full of Vws. i think the 67 was among the cars pictured.

I was at the Long Beach Terminal Island 1/4 mile evidently soon after Mike.
Several track officials and spectators kept confusing my (non 67  ::)) red car with Smith's red car.
Mike had made an impression with this group!  :D
Back in the day, Smith (white car) and Klingaman were a couple of the best street cars at OCIR.  8)

The sale of Mike Smith's 67 was for $9,500. USD and included many spare parts which Akira still owns to this day. Upon my last trip to Japan the red 67 as well as all the rest of the nostalgia from the era still looked as good as the day they were sold not including the mass amount of collected dust and dirt/LOL. Kris K's car was also sold to Akira around the same time with the same purchase value. Kris's car was sold first to help Mike determine his decision to sell or not. This was a very hard decision for BOTH Mike and Kris. Mike's 1776 ran a K-8 and I really didnt like driving the car as my Notchback with my Mountain Mouse 1600 was so much funner so it seemed>UNTIL you hit the NOX in the red rocket..!! Mike Smith's white racer was in fact a street car first and was one of the first Nitrous equipped vw's with a Marvin Miller set up. When we street raced, you could hear the air just FILL the air with the DEEP sound of the nitrous, that pretty much overwhelmed EVERYONE at the time..!!  : )...
