Title: Rear tyre recommendation - 69 Beetle Post by: leec on March 29, 2015, 12:31:02 pm I have a 69 Beetle (long axle) that has porsche pattern drums and JGE Kozmiks (et +30) wheels to go on
Its stock height at the rear. I have some firestone 145's for the front but have no idea what to run on the back as only have experience with short axle cars/tyre combos. Want it to fill the arch but no idea what size I can get away with Been thinking a 185/70? Any thoughts appreciated Lee Title: Re: Rear tyre recommendation - 69 Beetle Post by: Neil Davies on March 29, 2015, 20:55:06 pm Round ones. In black. Easy. :D
Tricky bit is that different makes of tyre have different sidewall shapes. I had some Avon 165s on my Ghia many years ago on MWS 8spokes and the sidewalls had a lovely bulge that looked great but was only mm from the arch. My orange 70 had Michelin ZX 165s on 5.5J Sprintstars but the offset was funky so the filled the arch, whereas the Anthracite 70/72 I did for my cousin had 185/65s (cant remember the make) on more MWS 8spokes and the tucked in nicer. Not tall enough tho, a 185/70 would have been better but the sidewall might have bulged more. I'll get off my phone and onto my laptop and see if i can find some pictures. Title: Re: Rear tyre recommendation - 69 Beetle Post by: Martin Greaves on March 29, 2015, 22:29:59 pm Well Lee if you only had experience with short drive shafts.
You now know what I'm going to say....... Put short drive shafts on then. :P Title: Re: Rear tyre recommendation - 69 Beetle Post by: DKK Ted on March 30, 2015, 06:33:55 am I have a 69', I run 205/65/15's out back, 145's front.

Put short drive shafts on then. :P But then the close ratio box will go in, then the oval motor etc and I have a car I already have!! Ted, love your car. Just not sure 205's will work with the Kozmiks as the offset is not a tucked Lee Title: Re: Rear tyre recommendation - 69 Beetle Post by: Neil Davies on March 30, 2015, 18:17:27 pm Lee, as the Kozmiks are copies of Porsche-fitment wheels they may have a similar offset to Fuchs or Gasburners? The originals were designed for 912s after all. I've got a feeling that IRS is slightly narrower than swingaxle so that may help Ted too.

Always thought you ran short axles from the start Thanks Ron Title: Re: Rear tyre recommendation - 69 Beetle Post by: Rocket Ron on March 31, 2015, 20:01:59 pm When I went to short axles I had to run a 10 mm spacer to get the wheels off the spring plate
Only had the short axles when I bought the rancho box Title: Re: Rear tyre recommendation - 69 Beetle Post by: DKK Ted on April 01, 2015, 05:45:51 am Thanks Lee!

Thanks Alex, they were a 155/70, so nearly as tall as a 145 but a little bit wider. Here's another picture which shows that a 185/65 isn't quite tall enough on the back! :D (http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/505651.jpg) Title: Re: Rear tyre recommendation - 69 Beetle Post by: neil68 on April 08, 2015, 06:19:26 am When I went to short axles I had to run a 10 mm spacer to get the wheels off the spring plate When I switched my '68 from stock long axles to SAW short race axles, I went with 3.5" backspace on the wheels to fill the fenders/wings, and just clear the spring plates nicely. Ran 5.5" 4-bolt EMPI Sprintstars on the street and 6" CMS aluminums at the track with 215/65 M&H DOT drag tires.
