Title: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Pas Jr on April 06, 2015, 22:13:42 pm Hello cal look lounge! ;D My name is Oliver and I'm 18 years old I was directed here by my dad (Pas) who some of you may know. I would like to share with you my '70 beetle who goes by the name of ed.
[attachment=1] I bought the car just after my 18th birthday and soon after passing my test back in January and I have been driving it daily to and from college since. The car was very original and only had a few scrapes and some rot on the rear wings. I have plans to make a late looker of the car and will be posting soon with the work I have done so far! Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Neil Davies on April 06, 2015, 22:32:45 pm Awesome! I do like the 68-70 model years. I had a 70 in the same colour - best car I ever had. Tickle the front down, lose the bumpers and add some wheels and its sorted! There's a picture of it on leec's thread about rear tyres in the main section.

Luckily for me my cousin gave me his old 2L alloys with the correct tyres for front and rear for my 18th birthday so I'm all sorted on that front! ;DTitle: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: benssp on April 07, 2015, 10:08:56 am Welcome to the lounge mate, thought you'd like the rims. There's 2 more under the bench so you'll have a spare, & a spare spare ;D
Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Bernard Newbury on April 07, 2015, 10:39:05 am Hello Olie. Hope you are ok. You, like your dad are now on a downward slope. ;)

That's basically it apart from the T bars will be in black ;D Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Pas Jr on April 07, 2015, 18:06:42 pm Since having the car I haven't done much as funds are limited being a student :'( However the car did come with 6 boxes of service parts and general parts so I have done small bits such as upgrading the headlights and interior light, replacing the exhaust pipes and fitting a blanker plate in the dash. Being an 18 year old having a sound system was one of my first priorities ;D The car came with some old 70's speakers and a radio however they were too far gone to be used. I opted to fit a hidden system using some kickpanels that came with the car, some jvc 300w speakers and a mini amplifier with an mp3 line.
[attachment=1] [attachment=2] [attachment=3] [attachment=4] I wired all of the components through the back of the glovebox and drilled a hole in the ash tray so that the mp3 cord could come through ;D Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Flow on April 07, 2015, 18:27:09 pm Nice job with the mp3 jack ! That is smart 8)

Let project Ed commence ;D Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Pas Jr on April 08, 2015, 17:36:27 pm I had a few hours spare today so I decided to do some work on the car. I replaced the rear light seals as there were some spares in a box that came with the car. I took this photo with the rear light housing off. The difference in colour is awesome! :o
[attachment=1] I decided I would also fit the original kick panel carpetting over the speakers and panel I fitted although I only managed the passenger side. Onto the drivers side tomorrow! ;D Before [attachment=2] After [attachment=3] Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Bernard Newbury on April 08, 2015, 18:00:01 pm I had a few hours spare today so I decided to do some work on the car. I fitted the carpet over the drivers side kick panel and patched up a small tear that ran along the heater channel
Before [attachment=1] After [attachment=2] Now both panels are covered and look much more appealing than the black plastic beneath ;D Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: jamiep_jamiep on April 17, 2015, 08:05:50 am Cool car Pas jr!
Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Pas Jr on April 19, 2015, 15:41:22 pm I went to a small classic car show today and got a couple of pictures of the car :)
[attachment=1] [attachment=2] Also I have ordered drop spindles and a tacho so hopefully there will be some work done soon! ;D Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Pas on April 19, 2015, 19:48:53 pm That nose needs to come down ;)
Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Pas Jr on April 29, 2015, 21:32:26 pm OK small update my tacho and dash panels came through the other day and they look pretty good!
[attachment=1] However It's not all good news I got into a knock with a 4x4 which resulted in me losing my front bumper and both front wings in need of replacing :'( But the front valance is fine and theres no damage to the A-posts or steering so every cloud has a silver lining I suppose Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Good-Old-Ragtop60 on April 30, 2015, 09:33:00 am That looks very good.
Thats sad! I hope you can use the money from the insurance to repair your bug soon. :-\ Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Neil Davies on April 30, 2015, 22:06:13 pm That's a shame Olly. Try to either find original steel wings - dont go for the repro ones - or good quality fibreglass like Day Mouldings.

You need to ask around for a good deal on a pair of dropped spindles though... ;) Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Neil Davies on May 08, 2015, 07:00:23 am That's a shame Olly. After my little knock I've been on the hunt for some wings I've managed to get myself some genuine steel ones ;D (big thanks to Neil Davies). Also I fitted the tacho to the car and also put a matching temperature gauge in. However it isn't wired up yet and the bezel is a bit beaten up but for £10 I couldn't say no! :)
[attachment=1] [attachment=2] [attachment=3] I changed the bulbs in the gauges for some white LED's and they look cool at night! ;D Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: modnrod on May 14, 2015, 20:38:55 pm You can make the bezel look almost like new again by rolling a round handled screwdriver handle around the rim , without squashing the square lip if it has one.
Some light W/D 400 then 800 to smooth off the lip or edge works well, and then to make it all one colour obviously there is new paint, but a cheats way is to use a black permanent marker to colour it in. ;) Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Pas Jr on May 15, 2015, 13:01:23 pm You can make the bezel look almost like new again by rolling a round handled screwdriver handle around the rim , without squashing the square lip if it has one. I was wondering whether it is still possible to fit the module or would I have to change to the larger distributor with electronic ignition already fitted?

Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Neil Davies on June 16, 2015, 22:33:41 pm Depends on what you're doing to the rest of the motor! A 1641 with twin carbs will get you into plenty of trouble at your age, and an 009 would be ideal for that. If you're staying stock 1500 for now then just stick with the original vacuum advance dizzy. I always look to future-proofing my stuff - thats why i had a merged 1 5/8" header on a 1600 single port! I didn't need to buy it later. Same goes with the 36 Dells using the same manifold and linkage kit as 40s and 44s.
Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Pas Jr on June 20, 2015, 17:50:45 pm Small update. I got some tbars and put them on the car as well as an empi gearknob just to make the car look a bit better :P. I haven't managed to get the wings on or painted yet so the battered ones are staying for now ::). But it's finally starting to look a bit like cal looker
[attachment=1] [attachment=2] Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Neil Davies on June 21, 2015, 14:18:55 pm Looking good Olly! If you take off the hubcaps and paint just the area behind them in black you'll make the wheels look much cooler. Just like the Darrell Vittone Race Shop '67 that's in Keith Seume's first Cal Look book. Trust me! ;)
Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Pas Jr on June 30, 2015, 17:03:21 pm Took the car for it's MOT today passed with a couple of advisories so no worrying about that for a year ;D
Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Pas Jr on July 31, 2016, 21:44:17 pm So its been over a year since I've last posted and not much has happened with the car up to this point, however the car needed some welding (rear parcel shelf replacement) so while it is in with the welder and painter it is going to get some much needed modification. The plan is for a full body respray, de-trim, drop spindles, 2L alloys put on and cal look window rubbers all round. So hopefully there will be more updates in the following weeks ;D
Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Jos on August 01, 2016, 12:49:28 pm Waiting with anticipation! Here's my '68 that looks a bit like yours (I've still go a lot of work to do on mine as well).

Cheers Kev Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Pas Jr on August 11, 2016, 13:56:39 pm Small update, the car is making progress the parcel shelf panel has been welded in and is ready for paint so after that full body respray and modification ;D Also took a box of bits down to the powder coaters to be coated in satin black, T-bars,dash grills and other small pieces. The car had some very large and ugly inertia reel seat belts fitted but I've managed to get myself a pair of wolfsburg west 3 point static belts for the front seats at a bargain price so I've just got to get the matching lap belts for the back. :D
[attachment=1] Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Pas Jr on August 12, 2016, 16:49:16 pm Got my parts back from the powder coaters and they have all come out really nice looking forward to seeing them on the car ;D
[attachment=1] Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Nico86 on August 12, 2016, 20:51:07 pm Looking really nice :)
Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Pas Jr on August 20, 2016, 21:57:23 pm While the car is in the workshop I bought a later model 100mph speedo which works fine but was a bit beaten up. I took it apart and cleaned it up, as well as resetting the odometer I replaced the cracked plastic lens with a piece of 5mm polycarbonate that I cut and shaped.
[attachment=1] After seeing a topic on the samba I also decided to replace the stock illumination with LED strips which I managed to squeeze in around the inside of the housing [attachment=2] I think the result is alright for a first attempt just need to spray the bezel over as its a bit scuffed [attachment=3] Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Neil Davies on August 21, 2016, 01:30:54 am Ollie, when you repaint the bezel, do it in silver as the '70 would have originally have been. Then you'll have a 100mph speedo that looks like it was always there!
Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Pas Jr on February 17, 2017, 00:26:47 am Lots of work has been going on since I last posted, after some digging more areas that needed welding were found. The passenger side heater channel and floor pan needed some work as well as around the rear wheel arches these were all patched up and the car is nearly ready for paint. The engine was removed to get the car ready for paint and the rear valence needed some work to get it ready so while its being worked on its being made removable ;D
Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Pas Jr on February 17, 2017, 12:42:39 pm [attachment=1]
Rear wheel arch in need of patching [attachment=2] All patched up nicely Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Pas Jr on September 09, 2017, 16:58:28 pm Ok so a bit more time has passed and the car is progressing, after more digging more small areas in need of welding were found which required the body to be separated from the pan. whilst the pan is separated it is going to be stripped, blasted and repainted in raptor coating. The front beam is going to be cleaned up with dropped spindles and while the body is separated it gives us an opportunity to replace all the brake lines, fuel lines etc.The body has begun paint prep and i'm eager to see the finished job ;D

This weekend we rolled the pan out from under the car and stripped it down to be sandblasted and raptor coated ;D

It looks in good shape with just a few welding repairs to do, the worst one being the frame head front panel.

Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Pas Jr on August 14, 2020, 23:38:41 pm Well long time no see cal look lounge, it has been a fair while since I have posted here :o I finished university and my degree last may and have since started my new job as a teacher since my last post! The car has gone through several big steps in this time too I'll try and list everything but may miss some parts ;D. After the pan was blasted and raptor coated we moved onto the gearbox and steering assembly. All parts were cleaned, degreased and sanded back as necessary before a good coating of trusty satin black.
[attachment=1] The gearbox mounts were replaced with heavy duty mounts and a mid mount was fitted as well before fitting the alloys. The new adjustable front beam was fitted with urethane beam bushes. The dropped spindles, new tie rods, freshly painted steering box and 2l alloys were fitted. We now had a rolling pan! [attachment=2] [attachment=3] Not long after building up the pan something else happened! [attachment=4] So this brings us up to where we are now. Body on, freshly fitted brake line and factory fresh upgraded running gear! We are hoping to move onto getting the doors finished and fitted ;D Title: Re: My 1970 cal look to be Post by: Pas Jr on August 14, 2020, 23:49:14 pm Some more photos ;D
