Post by: speedwell on September 07, 2007, 21:24:16 pm 80's cal look , what do you think about them ??? ??? , in the 80's there's a lot cal look , there were everywhere but a little different of her70's cousins ::) , many of those had graphs (and I don't speak about the splashs and others scallops ;D) and 3/4 of those rested on empi 8 , the queen wheels of in the Eightie 8)

Considering how uncool these cars are regarded now, how many of us were hooked by the 80`s cars in the magazines and are following a different `old school` path now? I had switched back to the traditional cal-look set-up with the dual merged quiet pack mufflers and remounted a single filter off the traction bar. First car was a 1969 beetle with centre lines and a mouse engine.69 c/w crank and 88 cima piston,se heads and 48 IDA's Dave Folts gearbox(4:12 with diff,stock gears). The blue car belongs to Ingo Neuhaus. He build it in the early 90s with a lot of billet parts, a 1641 cc engine, 40 IDFs and fully polished 5,5x15 Fuchs wheels. It was featured in the german VW Scene magazine and in Hot VWs around '91 or '92.
He still owens the car today, still in amazing condition (proving the quality of work over 15 years ago) but with T-Bars, a little raised rear and a bigger engine (IIRC). That car must be an original 80s Looker, I spotted pictures of that oval at the Chateau d'Oex show in 1997. Nice car with the typical color coded Empi 5s. Maybe some of the swiss guys can tell us more about it.

But it's more subtle than most of the 80's cars, which were graphic overkill! T-bars, raised rear and bigger engine brings the car right up to date, which is the mark of a good car in my opinion. It looked like someone had danced on the roof! It was a mess. As I recall, Tom didn't want to wait to find some real fuchs and asked Ken to install some copies, and the engine was a mild daily driver combo. The car turned out very nice. One whose name as always stuck (much like the pages of the mag after a long "read") was Shannon Rae who is still rather hot, so all that time alone wasn't in vain if you know what I mean. The lesser-wattage bulb that you tried to use is fooling the flasher module into thinking that a bulb is burned out in the circuit. An 8-watt bulb, for example, imposes an 18-ohm resistance on a 12V circuit whereas a 21-watt bulb imposes a 6.85-ohm resistance. There are at least three remedies: 1) Don't know why you'd want an orange light on the front of a car but if the bulb with the wattage that you need exists only in clear then buy some and spray them translucent orange. The paint won't burn off. 2) Wire a resistor from each side of the turn-signal circuit to ground to simulate the bulb load. The ricers have to do that when they convert to their dim LEDs that they so love.
