Title: Lightweight ragtop replacement
Post by: Phil West on May 10, 2015, 08:46:09 am
I'm looking to remove my ragtop assembly and replace it with something lighter.  I've not had one off before but I see there's plenty of heavy bits of wood and metal sitting up high.

I don't really like the idea of a flat plastic replacement, I personally prefer the curve of the original ragtop.  I can't really make a mould of mine as the fit of the original ragtop is a bit tatty in places so would come out in the mould.

Anyone got an ideas?  Is there anyone out there that makes a fibreglass or carbon raptop roof section that'll fit a 61 bug?

Cheers

Phil

Phil, how about a mould off a standard roof? It'd be smoother then too. If I remember right that was how No Mercy was done. Dave Fisher at Kingfisher Kustoms has all the old Wizard moulds, including the complete sedan shell, so you might be able to get something from him?

mark palmer took a glass mold from and old roof and left the fiberglass material showing through so it looks like the original material.

Not sure I'm getting the picture on that one - was it a mold of a ragtop on an old roof or the whole roof or what?

Pat at https://www.facebook.com/patvwshop has a lightweight one on his green PAT.BE racecar.
From my memory it's dzus'd on the car and looks kind of like an original.
Give him a call?

I was suggest this one as I have seen it at Gary's a couple of years ago. I thought it was a good copy.

Mark Palmers Meltdown, this what "stussy" (Rich) was refering to.

One vote for lightening the individual pieces, and keeping it functional :)

I did GRP Tops in Rallycross to replace the tin tops for improve handling and less weight, I can't go there now days due to nanny state "regulations", I could probably comply with more roll over bars, but the moment is gone, we could also run alloy roll cages then. [attachment=1]
