Title: Did any early DKP cars (1965-72) run Porsche 356/912 engines?
Post by: Jim Ratto on May 23, 2015, 16:05:18 pm
Something that came to mind, at 50th Anniversary, of all the members' rides from early days of Der Kleiner Panzers, did anyone ever transplant a 912 motor into their car?

Not going to say it didn't happen but I sure don't remember any within the ranks of DKP.

Tony Alvarez, purchased Dave Vanderbecks, 1720cc 48IDA equipped drag motor and for a very short time ran it in his 64 street car. As I remember, the motor had a penchant for throwing flywheels.

"you running a Porsche engine in that thing?" I know that I was asked the question many times back in the early eighties and my answer was always "no, it's a lot quicker than a Porsche"....

:)  Good engine ...But i think for a beetle the VW engine is better and a Porsche engine is more like old school

Don't know about DKP but I had two neighbors that ran Porsche power in their VW's. First one was a '58 or so sedan with 356 power (this was in the 60's) The other was a super clean black '67 Sunroof with 912 power (this was in the early 70's)
I always liked both cars

I just got that question yesterday from my neighbour, 'I said no, it's the original bug motor, but turbo...' haha it sounds so awesome with that huge cam and the single muffler now.

To Jim Ratto,
I posted the 1720 motor that Tony Alvarez bought from Dave Vanderbeck, I assumed everyone knew that that size is a big bore 356/912 motor.  So the answer did any DKP first generation guys run a Porsche motor is YES.  Tony did and it was in his '64 long enough to through the fly wheel as stated.  End of running the Porsche motor in his car.

First quick bug I ever saw, silver oval w/356 motor and chrome porsche wheels. Belonged to a spoiled kid named Ricky, who terrorized the streets of Santa Ana, Ca. circa 1963.
The car didn't last long, he crashed it heavily, mangling his legs. Quick while it lasted, humbeling many a Chevy/Ford.
