Title: The Ultra Rat!
Post by: SPRasmussen on September 14, 2007, 17:04:48 pm
This is my race project...

The car is a 1950 split, body is from a swedish forrest far far north. Pan is from a danish car where we cut the body up...

I'm currently making a lot of mods to the pan, to get it ready for my new 2387cc engine that Johannes from JP Motorsport is makig for me.

MS230 and F1 trottles is orded ( Read the rest of engine specs at our web site ) www.TeamAngoraRacing.dk/forum

Right now I just finnished a 2" tranny raise to get the aksels staight ( I'm not a high ass rear guy yet  ;) ) Its a lot of work, especelly with the rear tokyo bar setup that the rear shocks is mounted on...

The pan has a 2" narrowed IRS system, with custom made aksels ( Heated surface ) 100mm akselends and so on...

All of this end out in 944 rear vented disc, that I plan to remove and mount trums with studs. ( it to heavy and needless )

The gearbox is not disided yet, Johannes is working on something for me. ;D The gearbox will be connected to my GWD shifter...

Front is a 8" Angora beam ( we makes beams ) but i'm changing that to a 5 or 6" beam, cause I need the shocks soon... ;)  Currently there is a CB rack and pinion steering on it ( THATS SUCKS ) and will be replaced with annother rack and pinion ( From a Ford sierra... UPS )

Front brakes is CB vent mounted on CB dropped spindles. All of this ends out on a set of original Gssburners ( But need one more to have a set for the slicks )

The body is a 50 split, found in sweden... The patina is real but we had to make some rust but it was lucky is was only some in the heater cannels and rear innerwings... Parts was orded from Wolfparts so the job wasen't difficult...

All of the original windows is removed and placed with lexan...

The split Gauges is placed with Autometer in the ultra lite serie...

I'm getting TSS Racing from Denmark ( http://www.tssracecars.dk/ ) making me a roll cage in cromemoly this vinter... In that roll cage I will mount the Krikey raceseat... Only one, the other is sold...

Thats about it!

Nice car!!!

Why did you need to custom axles?

Did you weld the IRS mounts more to the middle as to narrow the rear track or what is different with these custom made axles?

very nice:-)

We narrowed the rear IRS because the wheels coulden't be under the fenders..

The IRS was narrowed outside nwxt to where the bearing sits... I see if can find at pic somewhere...

Wow - way cool project and your new engine sounds wicked. Do I hear one new potential 10 sec street car with a engine from JPM? I really like your idea with a pan and tech spec that`s 100% while the shell looks old and real. As a matter of fact I`m thinking of doing something similar this winter - only time will tell.

Up above here you mention that you make your own front beams. Do you make them in alu as well?

Thanks and keep posting pics. I have feeling this will one bad ass project thread.

Yeah, see you tomorrow Bang.

Opdate:

Some of the bluehats will problely not like this...

Okay, thought I may have to explain what I was doing here... I raised the hole innerbox to get room for the 2" tranny raise. I don't what and don't need a alu case behind me. On this way all of the original rubber will still fit in my engine room. Plus the splits have the original pikehole in there. There going to be a little customized stuff far back the the rear panel. But that should be about it... I don't need a bit hole in the rear inner fender like most do, because I'm going to run F1 thottle from jpm.

Plus I wan't to use my rear innerfenders as a engine support.

HI guys...

Not much opdate right now... Got some parts home from Summit: fuel cell, air/ fuel autometer and some dragrace shocks. Yeah and a whellie bar that my roll cage builder says don't work... hmm

But I was over to visit Tss racing yesterday getting the last details fixed before I drop the split off at his place... So this is the next thing there will be a opdate about is the rollcage!

Stay tuned!

Zach Gomulka : Do it ;)

Looks a lot better...

All of my opdate will from now on only be at our new forum... Sorry ;)

Opdate:

Kriller and I had a good day on the split. I got the motor and tranny in, Autometer's gauges is in, parts from summit came to.

Kriller made the new rack and pinion sterring, that we curvertet from a ford and then narrowed 6" to fit the split. He made everthing up to the steering wheel.  Everything in Crommoly  I bought a new steering wheel from summit with 2 button holes. One for launch control and one for the MDS. Plus a summit bracket to remove the steeringwheel when entering and leaving the car.

Thats it for now...

First run in the new car was great...

Went to Thisted friday evening to be ready for the race the day after , and on the way up there, Bang called if I could be there before 21:30 we could get 2 passes on the strip.

We made it and got the car of the trailer and after a quick warm up it was on the strip. First pass was 15.065 because I missed 2. gear. Damit >:(
2. pass and we tried again, got the 2. gear and the time was 12:98  ;) I was happy...

We packed the cars on trailer and went home to Bang to make some last details on my car. Was some problems with the trottle cable, and my linelock wasen't mounted yet... We got it all fixed by 00:30 and went to bed. ( It was kind of hard to sleep  ;D )

Next morning it was race day and we were off the meet up with the other vw racers from Denmark. John Elnef, Allan opstrup, Rasmus Bittetap...

After 4 passed in the low 13. I fianny got the best one. 12:59

Here are some pictures from the day :

You're right, you've gone completely mad! You've cut out all the bits that need repairing on my split! :D I'm a bit surprised you built it for a season then stripped it again rather than starting with a new car though! I don't think I'd have the balls to cut up a finished car! :D

Can't wait to see how this one ends up!!

Allow me to guess;

Depending on the cars weight and the driver, a high to a mid 10 sec run and 280 - 290hp without the vacum pump is where this ends up.

 :)

Great car, great thread. Keep the updates coming. Xmas holiday is soon around the corner = plenty of time in the work shop.

why would you not be allowed to paint the helmet?

Title: Re: The Ultra Rat!
Post by: BeetleBug on April 20, 2010, 18:20:15 pm
why would you not be allowed to paint the helmet?

Because paint and plastic don`t mix so well. And instead of checking if the right paint is used it is easier to ban painted helmets.

#10.1 Helmet

- Helmet is needed in all classes.
- Helmet should be approved according to NSR § 304
- Junior helmets should not weigh more than 1100 g.
- It is not legal to put stickers on or paint the helmet.

These are the Norwegian rules which again are taken from NHRA.

psssst..... his helmet isnt plastic....

I would love to see where someone used some house paint or somthing to paint a helmet and it ruins it...

I have sold 1000's of helmets and never heard this rule....

Pretty much every PRO Driver in the NHRA's helmet is painted....

This triggered my curiosity and I had to check the FIA rule book that most European rely on;

10.7 HELMETS & GOGGLES

Only helmets in conformity with the standards listed on the current FIA Technical List n° 25 are accepted. As outlined under Class Requirements, drivers in all classes must wear a helmet meeting FIA standards, Snell or SFI Specifications.

SFI Spec 31.1A = Snell SA, open-face helmet
SFI Spec 31.2A = Snell SA full-face helmet

Drivers in E.T. cars (13.99 or quicker) must use a helmet meeting Snell 2000, 2005, 2007 or SFI 31.1A, 31.2A, 31.1/2005, 41.1A, 41.2A, or 41.1/2005 Specs. Drivers in supercharged, front-engine, open-bodied cars and Funny Cars must wear a helmet meeting Snell SA2000, SA2005 or SFI 31.1A, 31.2A, or 31.1/2005 Specs. Structural modifications to helmet/visor are prohibited. Cutting of helmet or helmet visor prohibited. Helmet must remain as manufactured, except for paint scheme/graphics and permitted non-structural driver modifications to helmet visor as set forth below.Taping or similar modifications to the helmet visor made by the driver that reduce the driver’s field of vision, and are deemed safe by the driver in the driver’s judgment, is allowed at this time so long as the driver demonstrates to the technical inspectors that the purpose of the modification is to reduce distraction in the driver’s field of vision. By using such a modification to the helmet visor , the driver acknowledges and agrees that the driver deems such modification safe in the driver’s judgment consistent with the driver’s obligations. See Class Requirements.
Drivers of any open-bodied car wearing an “open face” helmet must wear protective goggles. Modifications to helmet/visor/visor are prohibited. All helmets must have the appropriate certification sticker affixed inside the helmet.

So apparantly the Norwegian rules are not according to the FIA rules which is not a suprise  ::)

Began the wirring, fitting the AL7 box...

Fuel line are in ( gonna change them to black later )

And most important, I unraised the tranny with 1" in the back.... This meaning that I get at bit more clearence on the cabs, and hopefully wont get in trouble with the wheels hitting the inderfenders. But still a problem when the 58 arrive yahoo_nailbiting..

I think you should run original, crusty 16" wheels up front, and some widened 16's in the back. Extra weight be damned ;)

Think we shall Try some taller slicks. The gearbox is a bit low for the engine and that Night helpension with better60 ft.
So have a look after some 28" tall tires.
