Title: Anyone know about tuning T4`s?
Post by: kev d on September 24, 2007, 20:45:59 pm
I`ve been collecting bits for a new motor to into the 411 & need some advice on heads.
I`ve got a case, 44 webbers, 2 litre crank & rods, 103mm b & p`s & a set of 2 Litre heads - basic`s for a hopefully reliable 150 ish brake 2366cc lump.
The heads have rectangular exhaust ports & not round like I was expecting...are they any use or are ther better ones to go for?
I`m also after a 911 fan & altenator if anyone has one spare ;D
Cheers,
Kev

I thought the 1700 heads had the biggest valves. I'm fairly sure it's not the 2 litre ones!

The 2 litre heads are the ones you want, they flow better and are not "  quite as prone " to the exhaust seats caving in ( a big problem on type 4's)  The bottom ends are bullet proof but never mess with the drain plug on the strainer plate, you can break the cam ( no joke). And be sure not to go too big on venturies, even the 2 litre heads don't flow out the exhausts as good as a type one. If you want real good flow, you have to weld up the exhaust ports and re configure them like a type one. You will however make incredible torque.

We had 270 HP on a stock Type 4 exaust port flange , oval ones . I think this is a good result . This is no problem with a 2,4 engine . i would recommend to weld on an extra fin on the head to get it stronger for the 103 cylinders

Thanks for the advice - much appreciated :)
I just want to collect together the best bits as a basis & take it from there.
Are here any benefits with either oval or square port heads?
Also, what would be a good combination of cam & valve sizes to go for, bearing in mind I want a strong street motor & not a race motor?
Thanks,
Kev D

The oval ports are ok and a good Pauter cam with good lifters  ;)

For best type 4 heads you are best to go for 914 2 ltr heads, they have a 3 bolt intake manifold fitting, failing that a lot of people out there reckon 1800s are the next best thing.  The only time I had stock vw 2ltr heads on an engine I dropped a seat.

Also I know a lot of guys who do not like 103s on a street motor and prefer to use stock size B&Ps and stroke the motor instead, thats what I am doing with my '14

I agree. My stock cast, non-welded 914 2,0 heads with 46/40 valves gave my street 2,7 engine (103x80) 220 hp @ only 6000 rpm and 270 Nm at 4500-5500 rpm  :)
However, I did do some more 'tricks' to it than just that. EFI and a good exhaust can make a large difference.

Most decent 2366cc's give around 160-175 hp and have very good street manors, so don't hold back too much on the cam  ;)
