All the GB covers I've used have been that colour - just bright cad plated.

OK thanks this is clear now - I've just never bumped into these myself though ;)

None of the Berg covers I own are that color or aluminum , not saying that the ones he exported were the same material or color as mine. Mine are raw cast iron exactly like this,

Same here, I've never seen that one above.

Ok, just had a look and in the background of a photo I took of a customer's engine on the stand is a Berg oil pump cover.
This is a section of the photo, which was taken in 2002...
Check the colour of the cover...  ;)

Stick a magnet on it. So long as it's flat and fits this is hardly the most technical part

And if it is not flat grind it... Should last forever.

Here is the straight scoop. I just got off the phone with Tim at Gene Berg , it is possible that it is a Berg cover but it would be very rare as they only made them for a VERY short time because they went back to the originals very quickly. The part if it is new was made in the very early 80's . If whomever sold it to you has many of them I would be suspect but Berg did make a very few of them . Mike McCarthy

I have one of each in the garage.  As cast and a second that looks like zinc plating.

It's doubtful your cover is aluminum, it's just zinc plated.

I say it's a zinc plated version of the common cast iron cover and not aluminum.  Since it is a casting, you can't just pour Al into a mould designed for cast iron.  If it was Al, a new mould would have had to be made.
Maybe someone threw it in a batch of parts to be zinc plated?

we sold a bunch in the late 1990's which were zinc plated. The one on my car is zinc plated. I also had some of the "raw" iron ones.
I always paint them anyway.

make sure it's flat and clean and run it.

I have seen a ton that color.  Check it with a magnet but you should be able to tell by holding it.  Also, the dark ones aren't raw, they can't be or they'd rust to hell.  You can also tell they aren't raw when you take a motor apart and see the wear marks the gears make on it.  I don't think the zink plated ones are all that rare, I definitely remember buying them that way around 2002-2004 some time.

And it`s possible that someone had it plated. I`ve done a couple myself.

The ones we were selling in mid 1990's at BH were raw, shipped with some kind of preservative on them. But when we'd get cars in for service, once the ass end of the car was in the air for valve adjust, you'd see a rusty cover. I always paint the "raw" ones blue or gold.
