Title: Would you use these cylinders ? Post by: spoolin70 on August 01, 2016, 21:57:34 pm Your opinion please on these cylinders...
Asked some questions, paid the bill, patiently waited and they finally arrived. For some unknown reason 3, yes 3 have had the fins cut back to fit no.3 ??? [attachment=1] I'm left with 1x cylinder with all the fins uncut [attachment=2] Now obviously the more fins the better, but how much would these fins being cut effect temperatures ? 4" turbo engines need all the cooling they can get. And as a side note, would you accept these ? You've paid for a product from a supplier who apparently knows what they are doing and yet someone there can't count properly and got 1 mixed up with 3. Thanks Darren Title: Re: Would you use these cylinders ? Post by: UltraOrange67-2443 on August 01, 2016, 22:57:26 pm Pauter?
Look the same as mine, not checked how many have been machined like that. I'm thinking it will clear my head tins better with the trimmed areas. Cheers, Nick Title: Re: Would you use these cylinders ? Post by: Fiatdude on August 02, 2016, 05:16:01 am I don't think it will matter --- put the full finned one on number three, that always the hottest anyway -- get the top of the pistons and heads (exhaust ports too) coated for heat resistance if your serious for street use -- run E85 too!!
Title: Re: Would you use these cylinders ? Post by: spoolin70 on August 02, 2016, 23:24:39 pm Nick - I'd have a look at how many have been cut back. I'm still amazed such a simple mistake could be made. You might be lucky, the person who can count to 4 might have been working the day yours were machined and only 1 out of 4 has been trimmed.
Fiatdude - my case isn't with me at the moment but I thought no.3 ONLY was the one that was cut back to clear the case. All the others can/should be full fin cylinders ? I'd love to use E85 but it's just not available enough (or at all at the pump) here in England. Thanks Darren Title: Re: Would you use these cylinders ? Thanks Darren Correct, don't believe what you read on the internet, its full of people that make shit up just to write something ;) And to answer your question I would run them, most of the cooling is done in head and top 50-60mm of cylinder unless you run really big deck height in my opinion cheers Richie Title: Re: Would you use these cylinders ? Post by: UltraOrange67-2443 on August 04, 2016, 22:57:55 pm All 4 are like that on my set.
I have a 4" set. Title: Re: Would you use these cylinders ? Post by: Bruce on August 06, 2016, 04:26:02 am .... but how much would these fins being cut effect temperatures ? The missing fin area may actually be beneficial. Install them so the cut fins are opposite of the pushrods so that part receives the coldest air. This should result in a more even cylinder temp all around.Porsche did exactly that on the 930 Turbo cylinders. Title: Re: Would you use these cylinders ? Bruce - if I'm reading it correct, I don't think it's possible as the cut back fins are on the opposite side to the fins that are nearly completely shaved off where the cylinders are closest (between a pair). So in this picture the shaved fins would be on the outside left and outside right : [attachment=1] Nick - have yours not been cut at the head or case end ? I can't take any more pictures/measurements at present because the cylinders aren't with me and I'm currently laying in a hotel room in Fontana - USA after a morning at Fontana raceway ;D Title: Re: Would you use these cylinders ? Post by: Fiatdude on August 07, 2016, 02:35:40 am I have more fins but less distance between the sleeves with my ARPM junk with no issue with the cylinders, but I've been fighting head temps running the 4" on the streets with my angle ports --
Be glad you weren't out at Fontana 2 weeks ago,, one was melting into the asphalt then.... I was going to go out there this weekend too, then there was the VW invasion at Donut Derelicts at 6am this morning, then Schweers was going out lawnmower racing today (Jr. Dragsters), then my eyes glazed over from all the choices, so I opened jar of white lightening my cuz brought me from Kentucky and the next thing I knew I was waking up this morning at ten o'clock and my head was hurting LMAO -- hope you have some good racing at there tomorrow too!!!! Not yet, my engine builder is cutting them to length. |
