Looking at re wiring my 72 standard beetle.

Anyone made there own or recommend a sellers full harness? i'm in the UK :)

I used the ones that VW Heritage sell. Very good, easy to follow and install. Everything worked first time!

yeah i looked at those, might be worth a ring, my 72 has the diagnostics socket which i don't want. but i also need to run extra wires for the ECU and couple other bits which is why i'm playing with making my own.

was there much slack in the loom wrap on your to push extra wires down and still look neat?

There was a bit, but if I remember right they can modify the loom for you. My loom was for a '70 to match the body rather than a '72 to match the pan, so no diagnostic. I don't think it had reversing lights either.

and they will make me a loom, and add in some bits for my ecu and rev gauge and they're neat relay upgrade for headlights for £290 delivered which isn't bad, i'm almost wondering if they do the looms for VWH...
pretty tempted to go this route over making my own tbh but chuck in a modern blade fusebox maybe

But it looks good,same color as original loom.

i'm going to go with the guys in the link above, very good communication, happy to add in wires for my ECU, rev gauge, 911 alternator and upgraded front lights with micro relays ect... hopefully get that ordered tomorrow, just need to sort out the rear lights now for some good bulb holders or refurb mine and fit my hella/bosch headlights and i should be worry free!!

gonna fit a modern fuse box too

so,

final spec

Full beetle loom (lights ect)
uprated headlight loom with relays
wires for rev gauge and ecu
starter relay circuit
wiring for porsche fan
diagnostic port delete

coming in at £309 delivered including vat.
i'm happy with that, given a normal loom is £289 for my beetle and thats without all i've listed above. the headlight looms are normally £39 on there own.

just the other day i coasted it to the entrance my base at work as it just died, wiggling wires sorted it after i traced it to the ignition live not working for the ecu relay... that was the last straw  ::)

Very happy with the loom! Beautifully terminated and labelled up for me. Looking forward to fitting it :)
