Title: Driving a bug without engine lid fitted
Post by: Garrick Clark on September 11, 2016, 12:39:06 pm
Hi guys.
Is it legal to drive a bug without the engine lid fitted. The turbo and the carb are in the way. Its in the space between the valance and the 1200 rear bumper curve so lid wont close. I have to fit extended deck lid stand offs and prop the bottom of the lid open a lot.  I don't want to cut the lid to fit.

Baja bugs and buggies seem to get away with it.
Thanks for any replies.

No it's not illegal.  You might get a 'keen' traffic officer pulling you over for a chat but i'm guessing its not a daily driver so the chances of that happening are rare.  If you were really concerned you could fit a belt guard like you find on buggies etc but that's up to you.

As you point out buggies and baja's have open engines and they go through m.o.t's etc no problems.

I guess there is always the option of a second decklid cut to fit so you can keep the other intact?

Cheers

Paul

Where in the country are you? I'm sure plenty of us have lids that could be cut up to fit. Rather than just having a hole with the turbo in it, why not look at a bulge to cover it?

As long as there are no moving parts for little hands to touch, I think you're good to go.

I see you ran an 11.2 at Action with the Ida's, with a bit of gas?

Great time. That's a big jump from last time it was n/a. What's the spec?
