Title: Adding more thread to a press in stud? Post by: leec on January 08, 2017, 19:25:14 pm I have started to install some press in studs for my oval. The threaded part of the stud could do with a few more mm of threads cut on it (there is a shoulder before the knurled part that grips the drum)
Is it acceptable to cut a few more threads on it, or does the shoulder need to remain? Lee Title: Re: Adding more thread to a press in stud? Post by: spanners on January 08, 2017, 20:24:00 pm Stud threads are rolled rather than cut, cutting would be a big no no due to the stress riser nightmare, im not sure of the problem facing you, if its more thread protrusion into the nut you want, you could spot face the back of the disc provided theres meat enough, there usualy is plenty, if the nut is bottoming on the splined section with a wheel fitted, a wheel spacer or shim under the stud shoulder back of the disc, studs do come with various spline reaches though..

My problem is the wheel nut bottoms out before the wheel is tight. Will have to source another type of stud. Shame as the ones I have are new/unused Lee Title: Re: Adding more thread to a press in stud? Exactly what my dad suggested. Will just source some studs with less of a shoulder (non threaded part) Title: Re: Adding more thread to a press in stud? I picked some up off ebay. Can't you use a washer under the wheel nut? Cheers, Nick Title: Re: Adding more thread to a press in stud? Post by: leec on January 09, 2017, 23:18:22 pm Thank you,
Found these. They look like they will do the job without the need for spacers/washers etc Any thoughts on these? http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/10-x-M12-x-1-5-Knock-In-Wheel-Studs-14-3mm-Spline-50mm-Thread-/182265283595?_trkparms=aid%253D222007%2526algo%253DSIC.MBE%2526ao%253D1%2526asc%253D20150519202351%2526meid%253D9bf8c733fde34786b09c64ffd96a36b8%2526pid%253D100408%2526rk%253D12%2526rkt%253D25%2526sd%253D182265283643&_trksid=p2056116.c100408.m2460 |
