Title: Manx Build?
Post by: Doogster on May 23, 2017, 10:23:53 am
Havent posted on here in a long time but would you guys be intrested in a build thread on my Manx build? I have been collecting parts for a year now and I am just about to pull the trigger and actually get this thing screwed together. Going with a very 70's feel on this car.  :)

Hell yes! Love a good buggy build!

Sandrover on here should also start a Manx build thread too! (That's a big hint for you if you're reading this Paul!)

The day we finally went down and collected the body From Rob @ East Cost Manx. Could not for the life of me decide on a coulor so I literally closed my eyes and stuck my finger on the clolour chart. Came up with this.

After the green was decided on, i figured I am going to need a roof for this so got rob to mould me one, again could not decide on colours, so spoke with Rob about the possibility of doing a painted roof, he put me in tough with all round top bloke on here Jick and the team at CMB. I spoke with Jick who listened to my ideas and made them a reality for me. What I wanted to do was kinda ape Mollys apintwork on the Inchpincher 2, assymetrical design etc.

So Jick took it in hand and hit the nail on the head with it.

So thats kinda how far we got last year. I got a chassis from Rob, but it was bare, looking back on it I think it would have been preferable to start with a Bug and break it.  So I have been spending my time and hard earned collecting parts to get a good start on it.

THen the biggest life changer ever happened and my other half told me we were expecting a little one! At that point I did consider sellling it up. What I infact did was move it out the way into my pals garage a couple of miles away.

SO its now time to get back on it.

Jobs done so far, I have build a fresh front beam for it with all new joints etc, I have cleaned up and serviced a gearbox which is now bolted in with all new mounts and seals etc, next job is to get the pedal assembly cleaned up and bolted in then get the brakes all hooked up.

I have renewed all the braking system all I need to do now is plumb it all togethers.

I have since picked up a wee 1600 motor that a pal of mine has build, this was his first engine build so I plan to take it apart and go through it all and add a few nice bits.

THis is where I could use some input from you guys though.

I have never built up a vw motor before although, what I want to do is build it up to be a warmed over "1600" ideal for pushing the buggy about and also a bit of fun down the dragstrip.

I also want to build something kinda 70's period correct, can anyone offer me any input on what I should be looking at here?  ;D

Cheers, its a bit different and not too everyones taste but I think the painted roof thing is going to set it apart from other. (Not sure this would have been done int he 70's but hey ho)

Out  of interest, how will you go about registering it? Or are you putting it through SVA?

I think BIVA is quite do-able with a buggy, but its got to be thought out well in advance and planned for throughout the build. Either that or start with a pan thats already registered as a convertible...

You're still changing the entire body, shortening the 'pan. Under new (well, current) regs, that means the vehicle has to be subject to SVA (or whatever you want to call it) test before it can be registered and legally take to the road, just like any Speedster replica or other kit car today. If you don't then the vehicle is illegally on the road – you get stopped for any reason, or involved in an accident, good luck...
