Title: Fly cut
Post by: Mauro Cattan on October 20, 2007, 16:23:52 pm
Hi there,
I need to fly-cut my new heads, 94mm bore, 50cc, for increase the CR.
I saw there is the fly cut tool for sale, http://www2.cip1.com/PhotoGallery.asp?ProductCode=C15%2D98016 (http://www2.cip1.com/PhotoGallery.asp?ProductCode=C15%2D98016)
someone has ever done before? Is it an easy job?

Ciao
Mauro

You need to use this tool in either a drill press or a mill – don't try to use a hand-held electric drill or the cutter will jump and damage the head. Otherwise the tool is fine – it's the usual one used for fly-cutting heads.

I haven´t used the actuall tool but Iam sure it works if you put it in a very sturdy mill. Most drillpresses are to weak. The toolbit is a copy of the one Gene Berg sells. I did buy one of those but found the axel to weak. It is quite a big surface to cut when you flycut heads. Lately I have made my own cutters similar to the one in the picture but much heavier and bigger toolbits to cut. I use a regular mill but it is even hard on that heavy machine. If you are only going to do your own heads its cheaper to go to someone with a CNC machine and tell him what you want.

It isn't only for my heads. It will be also a necessary tool for our Garage.
Thank you for your advice ;)

hello. this set up is more for the hobbist maybe using once inawile that thing is a pain in the a>s to bolt up you would get mighty tired of bolting that thing up. now if you have a regular mill i mean a R8 collett styel why dont you buy bergs other styel they have. the cutter holder and spud slide right up in a R8 collett and comes with a varitity of centers. i would hope they would still make this. maybe not. give em a jingle.   UD.

Exactly what I was getting at. The setup is the culprit . It takes a lot of time to get all the tool to the right size. For every bore there is one size to head and another for the case. I am getting a second mill just to avoid all the setuptime. It doesn´t help either when cylinders change size between batches.
